JAMES A. SHEARMA N, 0F CONIMICUT, AND FRANCIS DE GORDY. 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CIGARETTE BOX 0R CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1 915.
Application filed January 15, 1915. Serial No. 2.361.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES A. SIIEARMAN and FRANCIS Dr: Goran, citizens of the United States. residing, respectively. in (onimicut. in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island. and Providence. in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigarette Boxes or Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigarette boxes or containers. and the primary object of the invention is to provide a box or container for the purpose of both holding and dispensing the cigarettes, which box is con structed of card board, and ejects the cigarettes singly therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cigarette box or container which is constructed so that the required revenue stamp may be placed in part over the ejecting opening of the box, so that cigarettes cannot be removed from the box without breaking the stamp. or destroying same. and at the same time to prevent the cigarettes from being otherwise removed from the box except by the aforementioned destruction of the. revenue stamp.
Further and other objects of the invention are to provide a box of simple and economical construction which can be readily and quickly assembled. and to also provide improved meansfor both ejecting the cigarettes singly from the 'box and for feeding the cigarettes to the ejecting means.
In the draWingsFigure 1 is a front side. elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is constructed. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a similar view on' the line 77 of Fig. 4. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 88 of Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the ejector. and Fig. 10 is a similar view of the cigarette feeding means. that is. the means to feed the cigarettes to the ejector.
The box is formed of a blank shown in Fig. 5, which blank has scored portions to form a front 1, provided with a longitudinal slot 2, top and bottom portions 3 and 4 having extensions 5 and 6 respectively, and ends 7 and 8 having extensions 9 and 10 respectively. The end 8 has a longitudinal slot 11 which is disposed at right angles to slot 2. and the top 3 is foreshortened or has a cutout part 12 through which the cigarettes are singly ejected.
The box is folded so that the end extensions '9 and 10 engage one on top of the other. following which the top and bottom extensions are folded to engage over the extensions 9 and '10, with the free adjacent edges of the extensions 5 and 6 abutting as depicted in Fig. 2.
As above stated the cigarettes are ejected through the cut-out part 12 and the revenue stamp S is placed'so that it extends over and across the abutting edges'of the extensions 5 and (i and over the top 3 so as to completely close the outlet 12 and is finally secured to the front 1, whereby the stamp serves to prevent ejection of the cigarettes through either outlet 12. or by taking the box apart. without destroying the stamp, since in order to take the box apart. it is necessary to open out the extensions 5 and 6, that are sealed closed by the stamp.
For the purpose. of ejecting the cigarettes singlv from the box. an ejector is provided which consists of a slide 13 having a foot 14 which engages beneath the cigarettes at the base ends of the latter. the slide being con tractcd intermediate its ends and provided with an offset finger engaging head 15 the head being disposed exterior of the box so as to be capable of being manually operated to eject the cigarettes. The parts 16 which are. contracted. as above stated. extend through the. slot 11, and guide the slide in its movements.
The means for feeding the cigarettes to the ejector to allow the latter to singly eject the cigarettes consists of a feed plate 17 which has connected thereto by means of a shank 13 an operating head or member 1 the latter extending exterior-1y of the box and having a T-shaped member 20 connected thereto. which member is disposed interiorly of the box and holds the feed plate against rocking movement.
lt will be apparent from the foregoing. that the cigarettes may be placed within the box while the. latter is in flat or unfolded form. following which the. end extensions are overlapped. and finally the top and bot tom extensions are. engaged on or over the end extensions, following which the revenue stamp is placed in position to not only seal the box, but to also seal the ejector opening. The ejector is easily slidable to eject the cigarettes and the feed plate is operated each time a cigarette is ejected to cause the next adjacent cigarette to engage the ejector and be positioned ready for ejection.
The box can be sold without the cigarettes, in which case, a rubber band may be utilized to hold the extensions 5 and 6 in folded or closed position.
By reason of the structure, excepting the ejector and feeder being formed of cardboard, it will be apparent that the feed and ejector may be each made of a single piece of material, and the heads 15' and 19 forced through the slots, due to the flexibility of the cardboard.
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l 1. In a cigarette box, a body formed of a blank having a front provided with a longitudinal slot, top and bottom portions having extensions, and ends having extensions, one of said ends having a longitudinal slot disposed at right angles to said first named slot, and said top having a cut-out part ex- Coples of this patent may be obtained for tending through one end thereof to form a cigarette outlet, said end extensions being engageable one on top of the other and said top and bottom extensions being foldable over said end extensions.
2. In a cigarette box, a body having a top, bottom and ends, each of which top, bottom and ends having extensions, the extensions of the ends being engaged one over the other and the extensions of the top and bottom being engaged over the end extensions, and said top having a cigarette discharge opening-of a size and located so that a revenue stamp may be secured to'the box to completely close the discharge opening and ex tend over and engage each of the top and bottom extensions so as to simultaneously seal the opening and secure all of the extensions in their said intereugaging positions.
In testimony \vhereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
