M. SAMUELS.
Improvement iin Lamps.

fil W? MARKS SAMUELS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,528, dated May 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concer-n:
Be itknown that I, MARKS SAarUnLs, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improved Fountain-Lamp; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing-are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.
My invention consists in so surrounding the vertical oil-tube with an outer tube as to leave an airspace between the two. The burner is secured upon the outer tube, while the oil is contained in the inner one, so that, by no possibility, can the tube which contains the oil become heated, thus avoiding any possibility of exploding the lamp..
In order to more fully explain and illustrate my invention, reference is had to the aecompanying.; drawing forming a part of this specitication, in which- A represents the stand of any oil`lainp. At the upper end of this stand is a vertical tube, B, in which the oil is contained which feeds the burner. C is an annular vessel or chamber which surrounds the vertical tube, and -which is connected with its lower end by the connectingpipes d d, thus forming a fountain i'or holding the greater quantity of the oil. This fountain stands separate and independent from the vertical tube, with the exception of the connectingpipe d, thus permitting the air to pass freely around it and keep the oil cool. Surrounding the inner vertical tube B is a case or outer tube, e, which rests upon the connecting-tubes d, leaving a space between the two tubes B and e, so that the air can pass up between them and keep the inner tube cool. The upper end of this outer tube e is narrowed together at the top, so that the burner fcan be screwed upon it, while the wick passes down into the tube I3, in which the oil is contained.
By constructing lamps in this manner there is. no possibility of the tube in which the oil is held becoming heated, as the burner is secured to the cuter tube, between which and the inner one is a free circulation of air. The fountain C is also isolated and cannot become heated, thus providing a superior fountainlamp, which is protected, which cannot be exploded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The burner-suppontin,g` tube e, surrounding the oil-tube B so as to leave an air-space between the two, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
