. ing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a garment which can be readily'applied to protect the clothes of the wearer from dirt and damage.

It has been common practice heretofore" for men to use aprons and overalls to protect their clothes while at work and while these answer the purpose to a certain extent theyare objectionable in many respects. Aprons can not safely be worn near machinery and do not furnish suflicient protection to the clothes; overalls furnish suflicient protection but they can not be readily put on and taken oil over the shoes and pants and are uncomfortably hot'when'worn over the pants in warm'weather. There are many times when a man is unexpectedly called upon to do some work'which is very apt.to result in damage to his clothes, such as work on an automobile, when an apron would not fur-, nish suflicient protection and it would be ,inconvenient to put on overalls.

The object of my invention is to provide a garment of simple construction which can be readily put on and taken off, which will furnish all the protection that is required for the clothes of the wearer andlwhich can be safely worn around machinery without danger of accident.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of the garment as it appears in actual use on a man; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the garment from the rear.

Referring to the drawings, the garment comprises leg members 4, 4 which are sewed together along the line 5 and are also sewed at the waist line 6 to the apron 7 I make the garment in sizes and prefer and intend that the leg members shall extend down 'far enough to cover the pants of the wearer throughout their length and that the apron shall extend up far enough upon the chest of the wearer to furnish ample protection for his clothes. The leg members are of suflicient width to protect the wearers pants not only at the front, as shown in Fig. 1, but also at the sides, as shown in Fig. 2, and in order to hold these leg members in position upon the wearer, as shown in the drawings, I provide each member witha plurality of straps which are preferably fastened securely at one end to the outer edge of the leg member and are adapted to be detachably fastened to the inner edge of the leg member. I have found it convenient to provide on each leg member a strap 8 adjacent to the crotch, another strap 9 at the knee and another strap 10 at the ankle, each of these straps being fastened by rivets or other suitable means at 8, 9' and 10, respectively, to the outer edge of the leg member. The free end of each of these straps is adapted to be engaged with the inner edge of the leg member, preferably by suitable snap fasteners 8", 9 and 10". The straps 9 and 10 are preferably arranged to extend straight across the wearers leg at the back thereof and the fastening device 8" for the strap 8 is located as close to the crotch 11 of the garment as will be convenient for fastening and unfastening this strap,

but the outer end of this strap 8 is preferably fastened to the outer edge of the leg member farther up the leg member than the fastening device 8" so that the strap 8 will extend diagonally across the back of the wearers leg and tend to pull the garment snugly over the hip of the wearer. The leg members are shaped at the crotch so that the garment will project in between the legs of the wearer sufliciently to provide ample protection for the pants at the crotch. I also provide a waist band 12 and a neck band 13 for fastening the garment around the waist and supporting the apron from the neck of the wearer.

My invention provides a garment which can be quickly and easily put on and taken off and which furnishes suflicient protection to the wearers clothes for all ordinary. purposes. It is particularly adapted and suitable for use in emergencies in-connection with automobiles where it is often desirable to have a garment which can be readily put on to protect thewearers clothes while replacing a tire or making other repairs on the machine. This garment can be readily applied over the clothes of the wearer and it is not necessary for the wearer to sit down in order to put the garment on or take it off.

While the garment is particularly adapted for emergency use it is also suitable for regular use by mechanics in their daily work since it will furnish 'suificient protection to the clothes in many avocations.

I claim:

A garment of the character described,

' comprising a pair of members connected at a medial line at thefront from approximately the waist portion to and under the crotch, said members having leg portions adapted to partially surround the front por- 'tions of the legs of the 'wearer and having an inwardly projecting portion at the juncture of the leg portions to fit under the crotch, an adjustable fastening device at or about the waist portion thereof, and means for seeming the leg portions in place at various points throughout the length thereof, including a pair of straps extending from the outer edges-of the members diagonally downward to the inner edges thereof to draw the outer edges of the members over the hips of the wearer and to assist in holding 1n place the crotch portion of the garment.
