To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD M. MAT- THEws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Metropolis, in the county of Massac and State of Illinois, have invented a new and" useful Automatic Window-Screen, of which the following is a specification.
The device iiorming the subject matter of this application is a screen structure, one end of the screen proper being assembled with a screen actuating roller on a window frame, the other end of the screen being connected to one sash, so that when the sash is moved to an open position, the screen will cover the opening formerly occupied by the sash.
One object of the present invention is to provide novel means for assembling one endof the screen, to the spring actuated roller.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide novel means for assembling the other end of the screen with the sash.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means whereby the vertical edges of the screen are'guided as the screen is rolled up and unrolled.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects-in view which will appear as the description pro-; 1 ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of'parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can bemade. withwhat is claimed without de- Tn the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 shows in front elevation, a window frame depicted, in Fig, 1;v

Fig. 5 illustrating particularly the means whereby the respective ends of the screen are assembled with the sash and the spring actuated roller.
In the drawings there is shown a window frame 1, the same comprising stiles 1 and a sill 1 the sill l being designated generally as an end piece, since the device forming the subject matter of this application may be applied either to the lower sash of the window or to the upper sash thereof. The outer guide strips are shown at 3, the'inner guide strips are shown at 4, the parting strips are shown at 2, the numeral-G denotes the upper sash and the numeral 7 denotes the lower sash. A. portion of the inner edge of the guide strip 4 is cut away to form a guide slot 8. An angle member 9 is provided, one flange of this angle member constituting a closure for the rear side of the guide slot and the other flange of the angle member being bound be tween the strip 4 and the frame 1 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The nails or other securing elements indicated at 10 which hold the strip 4 in place may be employed also for retaining the angle member 9 as Fig. 3 will show clearly.
Applied to the adjacent edges of the stiles 1. are bearings 11, receiving a spring actuated roller of common and well known constructiomsavmlg as hereinafter described. The spring actuated roller includes a cylindrical shell 12. One longitu dinal edge of the shell 12, as shown in Fig.
5 is bent and folded upon itself to form a longitudinal shoulder 25, the said edge of the shell being ofthe shell, beyond the shoulder 25 and being: back'bent'upon itself to form a hookshaped longitudinal fiange 26. The other longitudinal edge of the shell 12 is bent upon itself to form a hook flange 27 which is engaged with the shoulder 25, and thus the shell is held in cylindrical form. A semicylindrical' casing 28 is attached as shown at 29 to the sill 1 and may be attached as shown at 30 to the stiles 1. The casing 28 shields the spring actuated roller, but is open at the rear, as Fig. 2 will show.
Journaled in the lower cross rail of the lower sash 7 are angular latches 31. The invention includes a securing strip 32, the upper edge of which is bent to form a despecifically extended, circumferentially pending flange 33, the lower edge of which is bent to form an upstanding flange 34. In the flange 33 and in the body portion of the strip 32, elongated slots 35 are formed.
The screen is denoted by the numeral 36, the lower edge of the screen 36 being formed into a hook 37 which is interengaged with the hook flange 26 of the roller casing 12. The upper edge of the screen 36 is formed into a hook 39 which engages the upper edge of the attaching strip 32, the lower edge of the hook 39 being located between the flange 34 of the securing strip and the body portion of the securing strip. Described in slightly difierent language, the sheet 12 is formed with two hooks or folds, one of which (25) engages and embraces the edge 27 of the sheet, the other (26) of which is clamped upon the lower edge of the screen 36. In practice, theflange 34 of the attaching strip 32 is clamped upon the upper edge of thescreen 36, but in Fig. 5 the flange is shown as spaced from the screen to avoid a confused showing when the drawings are reduced and reproduced. At its top the screen 36 is cut away as shown at 38 to clear the latches 31.
In order to connect the securing strip 32 with the lower cross rail of the lower sash 7 the latches 31 are turned to assume horizontal positions and are passed through the slots 35. Then, the latches 31 are rotated to assume vertical positions, the depending portions of the latches engaging the flange 34 of the strip 32. From the foregoing it will be obvious that at any time when the lower Sasha? is open, the securing strip 32 together with the upper end of the screen 36 may be detached from the lower sash thus uncovering the window opening. The depending portions of the latches 31 serve to 1 old the flange 340)? the strip 32 in place and since the upper edge of the strip 32 is bent to form the flange 33, a rounded edge results, which edge prevents a cutting of the screen 36. Further, owing to the presence of the flange 33, the strip 32 is reinforced so as to withstand the pull imposed upon the strip by'the latches 31whejn the lower-sash 7 is raised.
so far as the general operation of the strncture is concerned, 1 it iwill'be under stood that when the lower sash '7 is raised,
the screen will be unrolled from the roller, the spring thereof being put under tension.- When the lower sash is moved downwardly, the roller will take up the screen. i
It is to be observed th'atthe window frame is not cut away to accommodate either the casing 28 or the roller 12. As a consequence, no carpentry work is necessary, so far as the mounting of the casing 28 and the roller are concerned. The casing 28 and the spring actuated roller are located within the space defined by the stiles 1 and the end piece 1 and by this statement I intend to differentiate my invention from those structures in which the spring actuated roller is located in a casing or cabinet formed in the window frame below the sill.
Although the device herein disclosed has been depicted and described as being connected with the lower sash and the window sill, it will be obvious that any skilled mechanic, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and with no instructions other than the disclosure of this application, will be fully competent to connect the device with the upper end of the upper sash and the upper portion of the frame 1 of the window.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a window frame; a guide strip thereon; a sash slidable in the frame and coacting with the guide strip; a spring actuated roller journaled on the frame; a screen secured to the roller and to the sash, the inner edge of the guide strip being cut away to define a guide slot for one edge of the screen and the guide strip; a spring actuatedroller I journaled on the frame; ascreen secured to the roller and to the sash; the inner edge of the guide strip being cut away to define a guide slot for one edge of the screen; and an angle member one flange of which is bound between the guide strip and the frame, the other flange of which constitutes a closure for the inner side of the guide slot.

In a device of. the class described, a frame; a sash mounted to slide in the frame; a spring actuated roller journaled on the frame and comprising a shell one edge of which is folded to form a retaining hook and is prolonged beyond the retaining hook to form a screen hook, the bills of both hooks extending in a common direction, the other edge of the shell being provided with a hook the bill of which extends in an op- I posite direction and is engaged with the retaining hook; and a screen, one end of which is attached to the sash, the other edge of of the shell.

5. In a device of the class described, a window frame; a sash mounted to reciprocate inthe frame; a spring actuated roller journaled on the frame; a securing strip provided along one edge with a flange; a screen secured at one end to the roller, the other end of the screen being extended across the other edge of the securing strip'and being extended beneath the flange; and latch for connecting the securing strip to the sash.
(3. In a device of the class described, a window frame; a sash mounted to reciprocate in the frame; a spring actuated roller supported by the frame; an angular latch rotatable in the sash; a securing strip provided along one edge with a flange, the strip having an opening through which the latch passes, the latch overhanging and engaging the flange; and a screen one'end of which is attached to the roller, the other end of which is extended between the securing strip and the sash, said end of the screen being folded over the securing strip and being inserted between the body portion of the strip and the flange thereof.
