UNITED STATES-PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. WANDS, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC ROOFING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 114,733, dated May 9, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. WANDS, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Joint for Metal Roofing; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
This invention has for its object to prevent sheets of metal roofing from being cracked or broken at the point where the sheet is bent backward near its edge for the purpose of forming a lap, and this object I attain by inserting a wire between the sheet and the lap at the line of flexure, which wire sustains the lap when under pressure. The invention consists in the joint formed by the connection of two lapped sheets, each lap being inserted between the other sheet and its lap, in combination with the supporting wires aforesaid.
Referring to the drawing, a I) are two sheets of metal roofing; c d are the respective laps of said sheets 5 and e are the supporting wires placed between each sheet and its lap at the line of flexure.
When the joint thus formed is trodden upon by persons walking on the roof, or receives pressure in any other way, the wires prevent cracking or breaking of the laps. Sheets thus joined are placed crosswise of the roofs of cars, being long enough to reach from one.
J 0 HN G. WANDS.
. Witnesses: W. H. TOWNSEND, E. A. JAMES.
