; Application fiia September 21, 1314. Serial No. 862,806
To all whom it mayoonoem:
Be it known that I, SINA EWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to caps, and more particularly to a cap designed for use by firemen or other persons engaged in a similar occupation, which will protect their eyes from the glare and extreme heat incident to the performance of their duties.
An object of the invention is to provide a cap having a window therein and means to close portions of the window so that the person wearing the cap can adjust the opening of the window to suit varying conditions.
Other objects will appear and be better understood by reading the annexed specification in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cap showing the improved vizor attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the vizor; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on 'the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a cap body to which is secured in any suitable manner. the improved vizor or peak 6. The peak 6 comprises a base portion 7, an intermediate portion 8, and an outer portion 9. The base portion has an opening 10 cut therein, and is further provided with a depression 11 in which is fitted a glass or other transparent material 12. A second opening 13, of the same size and shape as the opening 10 is cut in the outer portion 9, and a third opening 14, slightly larger than the openings 10 and 13'is cut in the intermediate portion 8, a-groove being formed by the portion .9 overlapping the portion 8 adjacent the opening therein.
Pivoted to the peak as at 15 and adapted to slide in the groove are a pair of shutters 16 and .17, of substantially quadrant shape, and are provided with knobs 18 to facilitate the operation thereof.
The opening 14 is of a size and shape to frictionally receive the curved andstraight edges of the members 15 and-16 so that when they are in their open position the window will have as great a transparent surface as possible, while, when the same are closed to exclude a direct glare from the eyes, a portion of the-glassvwill stillbe open to afford a sight therethrough.
' From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be clearly understoodso'a further detailed description of the same is dispensed with.
It is wished to have it understood that minor changes in the form and proportion of the invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the same as claimed.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a cap. having a peak attached thereto, a window arranged in said peak, and pivoted means for covering an intermediate portion of said window and allow observance through said window adjacent the ends thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a cap having a peak attached thereto, a window arranged in said peak, and shutters pivoted upon said peak intermediate the ends of said window. whereby they may be moved to cover an intermediate portion of said window and allow observance through said window adjacent the ends thereof, substantially as described.
. 3. Ina device of the character described, a cap having a peak attached thereto, a transverse window arranged in said peak, shutter means pivoted upon said peak, the pivot points of said shutter means being spaced from the respective ends of said win ,dow, whereby said shutter means may be moved to cover the intermediate portion of saidwindow, and also be moved to allow observance through the intermediate portion of said window, and means for facilitating the movement of said shutters.
4. A cap having a peak with a window therein, saidpeak being composed of a plurality of sections, said window beingdis posed between said sections, a plurality of members pivoted to said peak and slidable upon said window, and means for" frictionally holding said members in any desired adjusted position over said window.
6. A cap having a peak With a Window carried by said pivoted members for adjusttherein, said peak comprising a base portion, ing the same. an intermediate portion, and an outer por- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature tion, said Window positioned between the in presence of tWo Witnesses.
5 base portion and the intermediate portion, SINA W. EWER.
a groove formed in said intermediate portion, members pivoted to said peak and adapted to slide in said groove, and knobs Witnesses:
