State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric-Switch Operators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in electric switch operators and more particularly to an attachment adapted to be applied to the usual rotary switch electric light socket whereby the light may be turned on and off by the pulling of a cord.
It is the object of this invention to construct a simple and positive means for operating electric switches of the rotary type which is readily attached to the usual electric light socket, inexpensive to manufacture and with but few parts to get out of order.
The advantages of this invention are that it changes a rotary switch electric light socket into a pull switch socket without any alteration to the rotary construction and is adapted to any form of rotary switch socket by being clamped thereon.
While the preferred form of this invention is illustrated upon the accompanying drawing yet it is to be understood that minor detail changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of this invention attached to the usual form of rotary switch electric light socket. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a rear end view. Fig. 4: is a detail view in side and end elevation of the rotary operating disk. Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating the operating cord or chain in normal position thereon.
In carrying out this invention a cylindrical casing A closed upon the outer end is preferably stamped or drawn from a metal blank. A switch operating disk G is rotatably mounted within and supported by the sides of the casing and is provided with a slot H adapted to receive the outer end and engage the faces of the usual switch key F of a rotary switch electric light socket. The circumference of the operating disk is grooved to receive and be engaged by an endless operating cord or chain 0. Guide nipples B are provided upon the lower side of the casing through which the cord or chain passes and are arranged near enough together to cause approximately threequarters of the circumference of the disk to be engaged by the cord or chain.
The casing A is attached to the socket with its center in line with the axis of the switch keyby a spring band D passed about the socket and secured at opposite ends to the sides of the casing A at one side of a plane passed through the switch key axis. The band is held in firm engagement with the socket by a screw E passing through the V band D between the casing A and socket, the headed end of the screw being rotatably mounted in one end portion of the band with the other end in screw threaded engagement with the other end portion of the band. The screw E is arranged below the switch key spindle so that any tendency of lateral movement of the key upon pulling the operating cord will be overcome by the body of the screw. The cord or chain being endless, a continued pull on one side will rotate the switch key continuously so that the lamp may be operated in the same manner as in a pull chain socket.
It is to be noted that this attachment comprises but six parts, exclusive of the operating cord or chain, all of which parts may be of metal and can be made in quantities and assembled with but little labor, furthermore, the parts being so simple in construction and operation the liability of their getting out of order is reduced to a minimum. The means of securing the attachment to the socket being adjustable it is readily secured in place upon sockets of different sizes. The means for rotating the operating disk may be either a cord or a chain as shown. The cord or chain may be of any desired length land will always positively rotate the switch rey.
This switch operating attachment is particularly advantageous where the sockets already installed are of the rotary switch type and are in positions inconvenient for ordinary operation.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing, of a continuously rotatable disk mounted therein adapted to engage a switch key, means for supporting the casing upon a socket with the center of the casing and disk in line with the axis of the switch key, and an endless cord passing about the disk for operating the disk to rotate the key continually in the same direction.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a casing of a continuously rotatable disk mounted therein adapted to engage a switch key, means for supporting the casing upon a socket with the center of the casing and disk in line with the axis of the switch key, an endless cord passing about the disk for operating the disk to rotate the key continually in the same direction, and means for supporting the switch key by a screw which supports the under side of the switch key when the operating cord is pulled.
3. In a device of the character described the combination with a cylindrical casing of a rotatable operating disk mounted and circumference of the disk within the casing,
and the casing provided with apertures through which portions of the cord passes arranged to cause the portion of the cord within the casing to engage and rotate the disk upon a pull on an exterior portion of the cord.
