Description
4 FOR OLEANIN v G AND DRYING GRAIN MAGHINF No. 11,458.
Patented Aug 'nnrrnn STAT Es PATENT QFEKQE,
HORATIO N; BLACK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
MACHINE FOR CLEANING AND DRYING GRAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent, No. 11,458, dated August 1, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HoRATIoN. BLACK, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Cleaning and Drying Grain; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had ,to the annexed drawing which represents a side elevation of the machine.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment in combination with an arrangement to be described, for cleaning grain by the use of water, of an inclined,
perforated, cylinder, for drying the grain after cleaning, by the rapid rotation of said cylinder.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing A is an inclined trough, into which the grain is poured by the hopper B. A stream of water is conveyed to the trough-by the pipe C, removing the light impurities from the grain as it comes in contact with it, and causing them to-pa'ss off with the stream by the channel D. Within the trough A is the shaft 4; on which is the spiral agitator and conveyor Z) said agitator being rotated by a belt over the pulley E, or in any other suitable manner. At the upper extremity of the trough A is the egress for the grain; this passage F communicates with the channel G, leading into. the perforated cylinder 1 This cylinder is hung obliquely on the shaft (Z, which is rotated by a band over the drum f, its lower extremity is open, and its surface filled w th the perforations p. The
whole apparatus is supported in a suitable frame R.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows: Motion being communicated to the spiral agitator and conveyor 6, and the cylinder P, as above described, the grain is fed to the trough A through the hopper B; a'cont-inued stream of water at the same time passing through the pipe C. The spi ral Z) agitates the grain, giving the water an opportunity to remove the impurities and carry them oil? at D, and at the same time elevates the grain to the outlet passage F, whence it flows .in a. continuous stream through the channel G to the cylinder P.
This perforated cylinder is made to revolve with the greatest rapidity, causing the gram immedlatcly on its receptlon to be carried around with sufficient "elocity to drive off the moisture through the perforations 7) by the action of centrifugal force, and by the friction caused by its continued revolution in passing from the head to the foot of the cylinder to thoroughly dry the grain. A suitable receptacle placed under the lower extremity of the cylinder receives the grain completely clean anddry.
I do not claim the employment of water 1for cleaning grain, such is well known;
\Vhat I do claim my invention desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The employment of the inclined perforated cylinder P for drying grain by the action of centrifugal force.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name before two subscribing Witncsses.
nona'rio N. BLACK. \Vitnesses SAML. GRUBB, WM. P. ELLIOT.
