TURBINE-WHEEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Appllcationfilefl September 29, 1914. Serial No. 884,051.
To all whom it may concern.
- Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. FnANoKn,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Highland Park, Mi ddlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Turbine-Wheel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved turbine wheel which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, very light and accurately balanced to allow running of the wheel at a very high speed.
In order to produce the desired result the wheel is formed of plates having alternating buckets extending integrally from the front with their faces at an angle to the faces of the plates.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of the turbine wheel; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the turbine wheel; and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same.
The turbine wheel illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 consists essentially of two superimposed plates or disks A and B forming the web of the wheel, and the said plates A are provided with integral buckets C and D having twisted shanks E and F integrally connecting the buckets with the corresponding plates. By reference toFigs. 1 and 2, it will be noticed that the buckets C and D are disposed alternately one in front of the other, and the shanks E and F are twisted so that the faces of the buckets extend at an angle to the faces of the plates A and B. Each of the buckets C or D is disposed radially and each shank E extends into a cut-out portion between adjacent shanks F of the plate B, and each twisted shank F extends into the cut-out portion between adjacent shanks E of the plate A. By this arrangement the central plane of the buckets coincides with the plane of the contacting faces of the plates A and B, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. The front faces of the buckets O and D are preferably concave, as indicated in Fig. 2, and
in the county of the steam or other motive agent is directed at an angle onto the concave face of a bucket from one side thereof to rotate the wheel by mpact and to discharge the motive agent from the other side of the bucket, as indicated by arrows in Fig. 2. v
For. very large turbine wheels use is made of a spider G on which are bolted or otherwise secured superimposed'plates A and B made 1n the form of segments and provided with buckets C, D integrally connected by twisted shanks E and F with the corresponding plates A and B, the same as above and 3.
It is understood that by forming the buckets on two disks or plates and alternating the buckets asfshown and described, the buckets are located close to each other and a large number of buckets are formed on a single wheel.
In the manufacture of the turbine wheel, each plate or disk with its buckets and shanks can be struck up cold from a suitable described in reference to Figs. -1, 2
blank by the use of a die, thus rendering the manufacture ,of the turbine wheel very economical, at the same time producing an exceedingly strong and durable Wheel, which is comparatively light and accurately balanced to allow running of the Wheel at a very high rate of speed. In the blank used for forming each plate with its buckets and shanks'the material needed for each bucket is sufficient to provide each bucket with a wide working face, that is, one which is considerably wider than the thickness of the blank and one that projects beyond both faces of the plate, as plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 5.
It will further be noticed that by manufacturing the turbine wheel in the manner described, the buckets are shaped correctly and uniformly to insure proper steam distribution when the turbine wheel is in use.
As the peripheral face of the turbine wheel is very accurate the casing can be fitted close to the peripheral face and reinforcing shroud rings are not required to connect the outer ends of the buckets with each other as the said buckets on account of being integral with their plates or disks are exceedingly strong and durable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A turbine wheel, comprising a plurality arranged alternately relative to thebuckets of plates, buckets and shanks, the plates be ing superimposed and the shanks extending radially outward from the peripheries of the plates, and the buckets extendinlg radially outward from the outer ends of t e shanks, the buckets and shanks of one plate being and shanks of the other plate.
2. A turbine wheel, comprising a plurality of plates, buckets and shanks, the plates being superimposed and the shanks extending radially outward from the peripheries of the plates and the buckets extending radially outward from the outer ends of the shanks, the buckets and shanks of one plate being arranged alternately relative to the buckets and shanks of the other plate, the shank of one plate extending into the space between the shanks of the other plate.
3. A turbine wheel, comprising a .plurality of plates, buckets and shanks, the plates being superimposed and the shanks extending radially outward from the peripheries of the plates, and the buckets extendin radially outward from the outer ends o the shanks, the buckets and shanks of one plate being arranged alternately relative to the buckets and shanks of the other plate, the faces of the buckets extending approximately at a right angle to the faces of the plates. I 4. A turbine wheel, comprising a plurality of plates, buckets and shanks, the plates being superimposed and the shanks extending radially outward from the peripheries of the plates and the buckets extendin radiallyoutward from the outer ends 0 the shanks, the buckets and shanks of one plate being arranged alternately relative -to the buckets and shanks of the other plate, and the side edges of the buckets pro ecting beyond the outer faces of the plates.
5. A turbine wheel, comprising superimposed plates provided with integral buck- .vided with twiste shank of one menses ets arranged alternately and disposed radially one in front of the other, each bucket having a twisted shank to dispose the face of the bucket at an angle to the'faces of the p ates.
6. A turbine wheel, comprising superimposed plates having peripheral buckets proshanks integrally connecting the buckets with the plates, the buckets of the plates being arranged alternately. 7. A turbine wheel provided with a web having integral buckets, each bucket having a twisted shank integrally connecting the bucket with the web to dispose the face of the bucket at an angle to the faces of the web, each shank and bucket being disposed radially and the side edges of each bucket extendlng beyond both faces of the web.
8. A turbine wheel, comprising superimposed plates having peripheral buckets provided with shanks connecting the buckets with the plates, the buckets and shanks of each plate being spaced apart and each shank of one plate extending into the space of the adjacent shanks of the other plate.
9. A turbine wheel, comprising superimposed plates having peripheral buckets provided with shanks connectingthe buckets with the plates, the buckets and shanks of each plate being spaced apart and each plate extending into the'space of the adjacent shanks of the other plate, the shanks being twisted and the shanks of the plate being bent toward each other to dispose the buckets alternately and to locate the buckets centrally one in front of the other.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J. FRANOKE.
