Be it known that I, (11.10 B. YAW, citizen of the United States, and resident of Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State or blow Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the tolloivin is a specification.
My invention relates to tally strip mechanisin for typewriting machines and its general object is to provide improved mechanism of the character specified.
More specifically stated, one object of the invention is to provide a tally stripmechanism u'hieh'is especially adapted for listing purposes. p
.Anothcr object is to provide a tally strip mechanism equipped to handle two tally strips, one of \vhiclr'is retained for a record as is common and-the other of which is adapted to he severed at frequent intervals.
vAnother object is so to equip a typewritingmachine with a tally strip mechanism that said machine is adapted both for genera-l typevvriting Work, such as correspondence, the making out of bills, etc, and is also adapted to be used for listing purposes providing both a series of lists and a record of such lists.
Another object is to associate counting or indicating devices with a tally strip'mecha: nisin so that the number of entries on the tally strip or strips may be automatically indicated.
Another object is to provide a divided or sectional platen, one section of which is adapted for ordinary commercial typewriting and the other for tally strip or listing purposes.
Other specific objects will hereinafter ap- 05.1; p To the above ends my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of de *ic-es and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims. v
In carrying out my invention in the pres are provided, each having its own line spacing ratchet Wheel and a cooperative pawl. and both being associated with feed roller mechanism. The pavvls are controlled from the regular line spacing handle or lever and may be adjusted with respect to each other and to their ratchet Wheels so that either orboth may operate at will when the line space lever is actuated. A tally delivery carrier or roll holder and a tally receiving carrier are mounted above the right-hand or tally platen or section on a support or bracket- WlllCll secured to the platen carriage near the right-hand end thereof. The tally receiving roll holder being positively connected to the tally platen by a train of gears, said roll holder is adapted to receive the innermost of two tally strips which are delivered from the delivery roll holdertogethcr with a carbon strip. The outer of the QWO tally strips is preferably torn off at intervals against the upper edge of the paper apron which is serrated for the purpose. The construction leaves the left-hand or main platen sect-ion practically free and unencumbered so that it may he used for ordinary 't-ypeivriting work independently of the tally platen and devicesv A spring mounted indicating dial or disk also pro" vided associated "ith a stationary pointer and disconnectihly connected by hearing with the tally receiving roll so as to he turned one step for each actuation of said roll, thus indicating the number of items \vriten thereon. When an individual list is completed the pointer and indicator will show the number of items on said list, which number may be printed prior to tearing off too Written section of the outer tally strip.

Fig. 3 is a face view'of a portion ofa listing or tally strip. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the platen. Figs. 5 and 6 are longitudinal sectional views respectively of the rally delivery and receiving roll holders or carriers. Figs. 7 and 8 arefragmentary side-elevations of the line spacing mechanism, the parts being shown set in different relationships in the two figures; Fig. 9 is a sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the dotted line :2 in Fig. 8 and looking in the direction of the arrow at said line. Fig. 10 is a rear elevation partly in section of the tally indicating mechanism and its mounting.
As appears from Figs. 1 and 2 the main frame of the machine comprises posts 1 sup.- porting a top plate 2 from which rise standards 3 secured whereto are grooved guide rails 4c cooperating through anti-friction balls'5 with the front bar 6 and rear bar 7 of a truck which further includes end bars 8 connecting the front and rear bars. With said truck is shiftably connected through arms 9 the end bars or plates 10 of a platen frame which further includes cross bars or rods 11, 12 and 13 connecting said end bars, said frame and truck constituting a carriage. The end plates 10 provide bearings for stub shafts 14 to the outer ends of which are secured finger wheels 15.-. The shafts 14 support a two-part or divided platen, the
construction whereof is fully illustrated in Fig. =1. The main or longer part, element or section of the platen is designated as a whole by the numeral 16 and is arranged coaxially with and at the left of the supplementary part, or tally platen designated as a whole by 17. These elements, sections or parts 16 and 17 may be considered as platens in them :'selves. The main platen 16 comprises a hollow core 18 of wood and an outer sheath 19. of rubber. Secured to the left end of the core 18 as by wood screws'20 is a platen head 21 having an outwardly extending hub '22 and a short inwardly The hub 22-is made fast to the left-hand stub shaft 1 1. within the hollow of the core 18 and frictionally engaging therewith and extending rightwardly outside of and beyond the same is a tube or supporting device 25 which at its left-hand end fits over the hub 23. Ears 26 turned inward from the left-hand end portion of the tube 25 abut against the inner face of the hub 23 and are secured to the platen head 21 by screws 27 passing through said hub. Thus the tube 25 is fixed to the platen'16. At its right-hand end the sleeve 25 fits over the inwardly extending hub 28 of a ratchet wheel 29, the sleeve having ears 30 inturned from its end-portion, which ears 7 are secured fixedly to the hub 28 by screws extending hub 23. by a set screw 24 Arranged 31. The ratchet wheel 29 is provided with peripheral ratchet teeth 32 which cooperate with pawl mechanism hereinafter described. A short, hub 33 extendsirightwa'rd from the ratchet Wheel and the right-hand stub shaft ltwhich passes through an opening-bored through this hub, and extending through the body of the ratchet wheel and through the hub portion 28, is secured in fixed relation to the ratchet wheel as by a cross pin 34. Thus the ratchet wheel 29 finger wheel 15 are rigidly connected through the tube 25 with the platen 16, and rotary motion communicated either to said ratchet wheel or said finger wheel will be transmitted through said tube to said platen.
The right-hand shaft 14: bears in a bushing 35 which has an enlarged threaded portion 36 that screws into an opening in the righthand end plate 10 of the platen frame. A locking nut 37 threaded on the portion 36 and outside the end plate 10 is maintained in the bushing 35 in fixed relationship with said end plate. The bushing is counterbored at its inner end to receive the hub 33. The tally platen 17 is mounted rotatably on as. I and right-hand the right-hand portion of the tube 25 and is arranged between the platen 16 and its ratchet wheel 29. Said platen, 17 comprises a metal tube orcore 38 having a sheath or covering 39 of rubber equal in diameter to the sheath 19. The platen 17 is provided at its ends with heads 40 and 41 which are suitably secured to the tube 38 and bear rotatably on the tube 25. The head 10 is a disk made fast as by soldering to the tube V 38 and of substantially equal diameter to the sheaths39 and 19. The disk abuts both sheaths and with them provides a substanthe ratchet wheel 29. The extension 43 is provided with peripheral ratchet teeth 14 corresponding with the ratchet teeth 32.

Hand controlled pawl devices are provided for cooperating with the ratchet wheels 29 and 41, said devices being settable so that an operation finger piece may be effective to line space the: platen 16 or the platen 17, each independently ofthe other, or to line sp'age both platens together as one. Said devices are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2,1and 7 to 9 afitl comthe head 11 is a line spacing of a single adjustable or mangoes prise an arm 45 having a hub portion'o which is mounted loosely on the enlargement 36 to the left of the end plate 10. said enlargement being smoothed down at this point 43 to provide a suitable bearing surface. Mounted at the upper end of the arm 45 is a headed shouldered screw l7 which is secured in place on the arm by a locking nut 48. The screw provides a support for a collar 49 provided with a flange Mounted rotatably on the collar i9 is an angnlar pawl member or actuator 51 provided with a lateral pin 52 which engages a'comparatively large hole 53 in the arm 45, thus providing for limited relative movement between the pawl member'and its supporting arm. Said pawl member extends'forward and down ward and at its lower end te'minates in a pawltooth 5% which is adapted to cooperate 2!) with the ratchet teeth 32 to turn the platen '16, though normally separated from snid tooth.
The pawl member 51 has an extension 51? aboi'e' its pivot, said extension being provided at its upper edge with a series or set of notches 55, 55 and 57 for cooperation with a plunger .devicer presently to be described, which is mounted on a second pawl member or actu: ator 58, the latter being pivotally supported on the shouldered portion of the screw 9:? and confined between the head thereof and the flange or the collar l'zhsaidflange serving as a spacing device to maintain the ppawlniembers or line space actuators 58 and 51 properly spaced apnroand in the 357 planes or their respective ratchet teeth or and, 32. The pawl member extends downward from/its pivot and terminates in a tooth 59 which is adapted to cooperate with the ratchet teeth i to turn the platen 1?. The socket piece extends above the lip 58* and is cylindrical in cross section, being bored out as indicated at ($3 to provide a. socket or depression Wl lCll receives a plunger (34. the lower end whereof is formed into. a tooth through a hole in the top of the socket piece and is screwed into a cap (37 which fits over and loosely embraces the upper portion of the socket piece. The cap isknnrled and provides a convenient linger piecefor manipulating the plunger. A spring 68, coiled around the stem 66 and confined between the plunger and the npperiend of thesocket piece tends constantly to press the plunger down ward and maintain its tooth (55 in engage ment with one of the notches aforesaid. 13y pulling up on the finger piece 67 the spring (38 may be overcome and the plunger tooth eisengaged from the pawl member 51, en abling arelative adjustment of the pawl members or line space actuators 51 and to take place by turning the pawl member 58 on its pivotal axis. Then-when the planger is released it may engage with another of the notches at the top of the pawl member 51. When the plungen is engaged with one of the notches it will be understood that the two pawl members are connected to turn on their common pivotal axis as a single member or device.
In order to actuate the pawl meml'icrs, manual devices are provided which are like those found in the Remington machine and comprise a link {39 pivotally connected at its rear end at TO to the pawl member 51, said link extending: forward and being connected at its front end at T1 to thelonc'cr arm of a. bell crank 72 pivoted at to the carriage truck. The shorter arm of said bell crank is pirotally connected a link 7% to a crank arm 75 secured by a screw '76 to the rear end of a rock shaft'i'i, said rock shaft bearing ina housing '78 mounted on the right-hand end oi the carriage truck. A spring; 79 ar ranged in a depression in the housing 2 rounds and is connected to the rock :illfiib and tends to maintain the connected parts normally in the position. shown in Fig.
Forward of the housing the rock shaft terminates in a handle or finger piece 80 which is curved downward so that it may be con enient to the hand of the operator. A line space regulator of the ordinary l-lcmington construction is provided comprising an arm 81 3,7. The arm 81 is adjnstably secured to the outer face of'the right-haml-cnd plate 1O by a screw 83' which cooperates with a slot in the arm. By loosening the screw the arm may be set at desired positions on the end plate. The upper end of the arm is provided with a set of notches :ith which coliperatcs the tooth 86 of a spring nnmntcd plunger similar construction to the planger mechanism abovedcscribcd in connection with the plunger (i-l, said tooth. 36 being conncctcd to and-controlled by a finger piece 3? which fits over the top of a sockct SS; Said socket piece is secured to a c laterally outward from the upper i having an 8B which fits over the not,
arm 90,said arm being loosely and rotatably mounted on the enlargement 36' and being confined between the, nd'plate and the arm 45. The left-hand end: of. the enlargement 36 is threaded aiid receives a nut 911which loosely confines the'arms 45 and 90 on the smooth bearing portion of the enlargement 36. The arm 90 is provided with and the ratchet wheel engaged thereby to 7 an extent corresponding with one, two or three units of line space distance as deter mined by the spacing of the teeth of the line space ratchet wheel. The pawl tooth 86 is shown in its middle position or engaged with the middle notch 85 and so as to provide for a line space advance amounting to'two units. The ratchet teeth 32 are engaged by a roller detent 92 mounted on a spring arm 93 which is secured by a scrcwfi to the under side of a lug 10 on the extreme rear portion of the right-hand end plate 10, said detent maintaining the ratchet teeth and connected in adjusted positions. The paper feeding devices comprise a paper deflector or apron 95 which is curved around the under side of the two platens and extends continuously sl'lbstantially throughout their length. As will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2 main and secondary feed rollers numbered respectively 06 and 97 are provided, the same cooperating with the platens through openings 1n the deflector. The feed rollers for the two platens are mounted on separate sets of supports orhangers but are releasable together by operating a single release key. The upper forward edge of the deflector 95 is serrated opposite the right-hand platen or section 17 as indicated at 98 to provide a cut-, ting device. v
The tallcy strip mechanism proper is mounted on a supporting frame comprising upright end plates or arms 99 and 100 and a connecting cross bar 101 which is bifurcated at its ends, the bifurcations receiving headed screws 102 which pass through the end arms and positively secure said arms and said cross -bar together, making a single rigid frame or support. This support is mounted which cooperates with said rod to secure the' supporting frame rigidly on the platen on the cross rod 12 of the platen frame, the.
arms 99 and 100 being perforated so that the .rod may pass through them, and the arm 1 00 being provided with a'hub 103 which fits over the rod and receives a set screw 10st frame on a, shaft 106 and comprises as best shown'in Fig. 5 a hollow tube or core 107 surrounding the shaft 106 and provided at its left end with a flange 108 to which is fixed a hub portion 109, the. hub portion fitting inside the left end of the core 107fand being secured thereto by a screw 110. A bearing plate 111 is fixed to the outer face of the flange 108 and bears on the shaft 106. The right end'of the tube 107 is closed, the closed end 112 bearing on said shaft." Fixed to the end 112 as by soldering is a socket piece 118 which in turn is fixedly secured to the shaft 106 by a set screw 114-. Thus the holder or carrier 105 is secured to the shaft 106 so as to turn therewith. The outer face of the piece 113 is depressed as indicated at 115 and receives a disk 116 of fiber or. leather. The depression fits over and cooperates with the circular head 117 of ascrew 118 which screws into theupper end of the arm 100 and is set thereon by a locking nut 119. The screw 118 thus provides a support and bearing for the right-hand end of the holder 105 and the shaft 106. At its lefthand end the shaft 106 is depressed as indicated at 120, the depression engaging the pointed end of a bearing pin 121 (Fig. 1)- which is slidably mounted at the upper end of the arm 99. Outside said arm said bearing pin is provided with a flange 122 and a knurled fin er ortion 123. This spring acting against the flange 122 tends constantly to press the pin 121 inward and maintains it engaged with the end of the shaft 106. The pressure of the spring is transmitted to the shaft with the result that the fiber disk 116 is maintained frictionally engaged with the face of the screw head 117, the parts. co'ciperating to act as a friction brake for the tally holder as it is turned. By pulling outward on the finger piece 123 the pin 121 may bedisengaged from the shaft 106, allowingit and the holder to be removed. i

My present improvements primarily intended for listing purposes and it frequently happens that it is desirable to record the number of items comprised in the in- Tcfbhis end there is associated with the nail? mechanism indicating devices which are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 10. The indicating devices proper cornprise a cooperating dial and pointer mechanism which are mounted on a support that is pivoted to swin on the rod 13 at the rear of the tally strip mechanism in order to throw the indicating mechanism into and out of use. The swinging support comprises an arm or bracket member 156 provided With a hub 157 which bears rctatably on the bearings and has suitably secured at its lefthand end a gear wheel 160 which is adapted to "mesh with the pinion 129 on the shaft 128 .At its opposite end the shaft 159 has seciired to-"it by a cross pin 161 a beveled 1 pinion 162 which meshes constantly with a circular set of beveled gear teeth 163 formed at the under side of a circular plate or disk 164. Said disk is provided with a hub 16,5
which bears on a headed shouldered screw 166 that screws into a boss 167 formed at the upper side of the extension 158. The bottom of the disk 164. is supported on the boss which enables the gear 163 to clear the upper face of the extension 158 and maintain said gear in proper engagement with the pinion 162.: Secured to the upper face ofthe hub 165'by scre ws168 is a circular dial plate 169, said dial plate being beneath the head of the screw 166. The upper edge portion of the dial plate is thickened as indicated at 170, thus prhvidi'ng a raised-annulus which is impressedat its upper face with a. circular scale or series of indicating marks 171 as shown in Fig. 1. Cotiperative with this circular scale or dial 171 is a stationary pointer 172 secured by a screw 173 to an arm 174 which projects upward at the rear of the dial and terminates above the pointer in a rounded finger portion 175. The arm 174 is'bent under the disk 16 1 and has a downward extension which is secured by a screw .176 to the back of the extension 158. An arm 177 issecured by rivets'178 at the rear of the arm 156 and the arm 177 extends upward at the rear of said arm 156 and is bent around the extension 158, ter- -'minating at its forward endin an upstanding portion 17 7*,the upper edge of which is just beneath the dial plate 169. The portion 17 7 serves-as a stopcotiperating with a pin 179 which is fixed to and projects downward from the dialplate. The two step devices WVhen swung back to the full line position in Fig. 2 theindicating devices are disconnected from the tally mechanism and are inoperative. Said devices are maintained in this inoperative position by detent devices.

The ball 183 is constantly pressed toward the flange 185 by a coiled spring 190 which is arranged in the depression 186 behind the ball. \Vith the indicating mechanism swung back out of operation the ball engages with the depression-181 to hold the parts set as shown in Fig. 2. To render the indicating mechanism operative the finger piece 175 is pulled forward, swinging the indicating-mechanism to the dotted line position in Fig. 2 and bringing the gear wheel 160 into mesh with thepinion 129. .In this position the ball detent 183 coiiperates with a second depression 184 to hold the parts set. Preferably the teeth of said gear and pinion are sharpened or pointed so as to facilitate their engagement. The collar 188 prevents displacement of the indicttting mechanism along the rod 13 toward th'l'eft while toward the right such displacement is prevented by the lug 10.
The present invention is preferably employed in connection with a reversely operating tabulator of the character disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 738,235, filed vDec. 23, 1912, audit is also desirable in some classesof listing'work to employ computing mechanism such, for example, as that found in the Remington machine and known as the Wahl adding mechanism. In making use of'th'e invention for listing or tally purposes the tally strips with the interleavedcarhon strip arearranged as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The. indicating devices are swung forward to the dotted line position in Fig. 2, thus connecting them with the tally mechanism and the line spacing or pawl devices are set as in Fig. 8. From Fig. 8 it will be observed that the plunger tooth 65 is engaged with the notch 55 on the pawl member 51 and that consequently the pawl member 58 is set so that its lower portion is to the rear of the lower portion of the pawl member 51. What I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is 1. In a typewriting machine, the combi- -nation of means for supporting andfeeding a plurality of work sheets, line spacing devices cooperative with said means and operative by a single finger piece,=and means for setting variably said line spacing devices to afford an operation of said line spacing devices to feed either of said pluralityof work sheets independently of the-other or both of said work sheets together at will.
2. In a typewriting machine, the-combination of two platens, platen line spacing devices operative by a single finger piece, and means for aflordin adjustment of said de? vices to line space either platen separately as desired by an actu ation'of said finger piece or both of said platens simultaneously by an actuation of said finger piece.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of two platens, line spacing ratchet wheels one for each platen, a plurality of pawls one'for each ratchet wheel, 'a single fingerpiece operative on both pawls, and pawl setting means comprising devices for setting. said pawls so as to throw either one into operation and"t he other out of opera tion. 7

5. In a typewriting machine, the combination of two line spacing pawl devices, and
setting means mounted on said devices for varvin their normal relntionshi to each other, said setting means, moving on and with said pawl devices during line spacing actuations.

Ina typewriting machine, the combination of two line spacing pawl devices, setting ineans mounted on said devices for varyingtheir normal relationship to each other, a line spacinghandle, and connections to enable said handle to actuate both of said pawl devices, said setting'means moving on and with said pawl devices during linespaciii actuations. and means for variably setting the pawls in respect of each other.
21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of two coaxial platenelements, two line spacing ratchet wheels one for each platen element, an arm pivoted coaxially with said ratchet wheels, two pawl members c axially pivoted on said arm, one of said members having a lost motion connection with said arm and being connected with a train of actuating devices, and devices for interlocking said pawls comprising a series of notches on one pawl and a cooperating spring pressed plunger on the other pawl.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of two platen elements, two line spacing ratchet wheels one for each platen element, :1- pivoted arm, two pawl members pivotally supported on said arm, each being provided with a pawl tooth coiiperative with one of said ratchet wheels, one of said pawl members being further provided with a. series of notches and the other with a co operative spring pressed plunger, said notches and said plunger cooperating to maintain the pawls set in varying relationships, :1 lost motion connection between one of said pawl members and said arm, a line spacing handle, and a train of devices connecting said line spacing handle with the last mentioned pawl member.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of two platen elements, a paper roll one of said platen elements, line spacing devices for said platen elements controlled by a single linger piece, and means for variably setting said devices so as to line space one of said platen elements while the other platen element and the paper roll holdhr-remain quiescent and so as to line space the other platen element and its connected roll holder while the other platen element remains quiescent.

Ina typewriting machine, the combination of a platen element, a second platen element, a paper supply holder and a paper receiving holder, gears connecting said receiving holder with said second platen ele ment, separate spacing wheels for said platen elements, separate pawls one for each line spacing wheel, a single line spacing handle operative on both thepawls, and means for variably setting said pawls to change their normal relationship.
26. in a typewriting machine, the combination of a main platen, a tally platen, line spacing wheels one for each platen, a detent cooperating with the main platen line spacing wheel, a tally supply roll holder, a tally receiving roll holder, a train of gears connecting said receiving roll holder with said tally platen, detentdevices connected with said train of gears, line spacing actuators for said line spacing Wheels, said actuators being controlled by a single finger piece,
and setting means for rendering either of said actuators eifective at will.
27. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, line spacing devices, in dicating devices, means for rendering said indicating devices operative at certain actu ations only of said hne spacing devices, and other means for throwing said indicating devices entirely out of the control of said line spacing devices.
28. In a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a platen, a rotary tally receiving holder, line indicating devices, a train: of gears connecting said platen, said holder and said devices, and means for separating certain elements of said train so as to disconnect said indicating devices.
29. In a typewriting machine, the combination of tally strip mechanism comprising tally receiving holder, and means for turning said holder; indicating devices for indicating the turning movements of said holder, said indicating devices comprisinga spring mounted dial and a stationary pointer; and connections between said dial and said holder, said connections comprisingfa shaft, a pinion on said holder, a gear on said shaft inter-meshing with said pinion, a beveled pinion on said shaft, and a beveled gear connected to said dial and meshing with said beveled pinion.
