UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
-AUGUST ".WENNERSTROM, 0F ASHTABULA, 'LOI-IIO.
STRAI?'-HISTAINIIITG ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUsT WENNER- STROM,- acitizen ofthe United States, residing at Ashtabula, in the county of 'Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain.
neW and useful Improvements in Strap-Retaining Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
As is well known, postmen or mail carriers are ordinarily supplied with a mail bag or pouch which is suspended from the shoulder of the person by a suitable supporting strap. The supporting strap of the pouch or bag has a tendency to shift on the shoulder of the carrier and must, therefore, be frequently readjusted so as to prevent displacement, this being oftentimes a rather difficult operation when the carrier has his free arm filled with mail.
The object of the present invention is to supply an inexpensive, but extremely handy, strap retaining attachment adapted to be detachably secured to the shoulder portion of the coat of a mail carrier or postman and which is so constructed as to permit of ready insertion and removal of the strap with re spect thereto, but. when engaging the strap, the attachment will prevent shifting thereof downwardly on the shoulder of the postman, in an advantageous manner. The form of the attachment is such that it may be conveniently carried in the pocket so that, when the mail carrier is off duty, the attachment may be disconnected from the coat and will thus not be against the appearance of the garment, as would be the case were it permanently secured to the garment.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: 1
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shoulder portion of a coat showing the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view, dotted lines showing the manner of insertion of the mail pouch strap into the socket of the retaining device; and Fig. Sis a plan view of the blank of metal from which the attachment is made.
Throughout the following detail descrip tion and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Describing the invention specifically and Specification of Letterslatcnt. Patented Sept. 3,1912 Application-filed May 6, 1911.
SeriaLNo. 625,569.
referring eto the drawings, i1 denotes that portion of the coat or outer garment to which the retaining attachment is secured, and .2.designates the body of the attachment itself. It is contemplated that the shoulder portion 1 of the coat shall be formed with anopening 3 adjacent to the collar of the coat, which aperture may be provided by means of an elongated eyelet or other reinforcement so as to prevent tearing out of the openin 3.
The retaining device 2 comprises a body curved somewhat longitudinally thereof so as to conform with the curvature of the shoulder portion 1 of the garment, said body being made so as to provide a socket 4 from the intermediate portion of which extends a lateral tongue 5 at the outer extremity of which is formed an integral hook 6, the hook being an extension of the metal from Which the tongue 5 is made. In the construction of the retaining device, a sheet metal blank is provided, as shown in Fig. 3, one edge of said blank being bent over the body portion thereof to provide the horizontal retaining flange 7, the opposite edge of the blank having the tongue 5 projecting therefrom and the longitudinal edge portions of opposite sides of the tongue being bent upwardly to form spaced alined stop flanges 8 which are spaced, not only from each other, but also from the adjacent free edge of the retaining flange 7. The space between the stop flanges 8 and the retaining flange 7 forms an entrance to the socket 4: beneath the flange 7 through which entrance the mail pouch supporting strap 9 is passed by edgewise movement in introducing it into the socket, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The hook 6 is adapted for slight movement when passed through the opening 3 of the coat 1, there being sufficient looseness to permit of slight play of the retaining device to accommodate for the ordinary movements of the wearer of the garment to Which the device is applied.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new is An attachment for the shoulder portions of garments for positively but detachably securing a shoulder strap, the same comprising an integral device consisting of a longitudinally curved plate having one edge thereof bent vertically to engage the outer edge of a strap to prevent outward displacement of the latter, said edge portion being thence bent horizontally to extend nearly across the body of the plate in spaced relation thereto to prevent upward displacement of a strap, the other edge portion of said plate being also bent vertically to form a flange interrupted between its ends and spaced from the horizontal portion aforesaid to form a removal opening for a strap part, and the bodyof the plate having a 10 tongue projecting laterally therefrom at said interrupted portion of the last mentioned flange, said tongue being bent downwardly at its outermost extremity to form a hook.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST WENNERSTROM.
