column-setting 'device that is particularly" adapted to be used vidually molded concrete column in an upright. position ina structure during the erection of a structure, although adapted, of course, for similarly supporting metal columns or other columns.
' In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my, ,column-setting device in conjunction with a concrete column; 2 is a side elevation of same; Fig. 3 1s an end elevation of same; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view ofan alternate form of the invention. LTheolevice' comprises a pair of timbers 1 between which .the column 2 is clamped as hereinafter described. The timbers 1 eX- terid substantially parallel to each other on opposite sides of the column 2 and are preferably connected by a pair of rods 3, one of said rods being located near. one face of said column and the 'other of said rods being located near the opposite face of said column. The rods 3 pass through openings 4 in each timber 1, and are provided with washers 5, both ends of each rod being ,screw-threaded, to i', receive nuts 6, which, when tightened yagainst the washers 4, draw the timbers 1l toward each other and thereby cause said timbers to clamp the column 2 firmly therebetween. A plurality of openings 4 are provided in each timber 1 for one of the rods 3 and are arranged so that said rod can be inserted through openings eithernearer or farther away from the other rod 3 when -it is desired to clamp a smaller or a larger column between the timbers 1. A bolt 10, which passes through an opening 11 in timber 1 and, also, through an opening 12 in timber 8, bears a washer 13 and a nut 14 and holds said timber 1 in place on timber 8, there being a plurality of openings 12'insaid timber 8. The timber 8 contains a plurality of openings 12 Vfor each bolt 10, so as to allow the timbers 1. to be adjusted for a larger or smaller column 2, and has a pair of plates 15 set in depressions in the upper face thereof and another pair of plates 15 set in depressions in the lower face thereof, each pair of plates being provided with a plurality of openings that register with the openings 12 in4 sald timber. -This arrangement allows the timber 8 tobe inverted when either the upper or the lower face thereof becomesworn.

ing provided with a washer 21 and having its end s orewlthreaded to receive a nut 22', which when tightened against the washer 21, draws the timber 9 toward the angle-bars 16 and thereby causes said timber 9 and angle-bars 16 to clamp the column 2 firmly therebetween. The timbers 1 are clamped against the column 2 at a suiiicient distance above the door or ground 24 to allow a jack-screw 'timber 8. The.jack-screws 25 are tightened against the timbers 8 and 9 and are adjust-v ed in the usual manneruntil the timbers 1 and 9 and angle-bars 16 hold said column in an upright position, after which the hoisting apparatus is released from the column and the timbers 1 and 9 and angle-bars 16 hold same in a vertical position. Whenever the base of the column 2 is set in plastic grout o1' concrete, the timbers 1 can be clamped against the sides of the column and the timber -9 and angle-irons 16 ca n be clamped against the faces of the column suflicient to support the column in an upright position and, also, to remove the Weight of the column from the plastic grout or concrete until after same has set.
The column referred to herein may be either :in all-concrete column, or may be a reinforced concrete column, or may be either a metal, Wood, or stone column, vor may be a column in which an ordinary metal column is surrounded by concrete, and said column may, also, be of any size or shape.
It is to be understood that angle-irons, channel-irons, or the like, can be substituted for the timbers 1, 8, and 9, when so desired.
In the alternate form of the invention depicted in Fig. 4, the plates 7, 15, and 23 are provided with slots 2G, 27, and 28 that register with similar slots in timbers 1, 8, and 9, respectively, in lieu of Athe spaced openin s 4, 12, and 20` so as to allow the rod 3, bolts 10, and bar 18 to be adjusted.

In a co umn settingl device, a pair of spaced members for engagement on opposite sides of a column, means for clamping said members to said column sides, means in the space between Asaid members to engage a means on the under sides of the said members for engaging a fourth side of the column, and means for drawing said last named means against said fourth side of the column.

In a column setting device, a pair of spaced members for engagement on opposite sides of a column, means for clamping said members to said column sides, means in the space between said members to engage a third side ofthe column, means on the under sides of the said members for engaging a fourth side of the column, and means for. drawingfsaid last named means against said fourth side of the column, including bars secured to said members and having off-set portions which are threaded at their ends and extend through openings provided therefor in said means for engaging arfourth side of the column, and nut's on said threaded ends of said bars which abut the last named means.
