AIPLIGATION FILED 00T.26,1911. v 1,02%?83, Patented June 18,1912.
Wzlmisses Inventor Hamid Hppa h' /fo Miam-w y L my f morn-D vSTATES i oFFIoE.
DANIEL lAPPEL, F EAST CLEVELAND, OHIO', ASSIGNO T0 UN'ICN PAPER BAG MACHINE GOMPANY, GEK PELADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A COBPORATIDN 0F PENNSYL- To all whom t may concern: l
Be it known that l, DANIEL APPEL, o
citizen of the United States, residingv at East Cleveland, in the county of CoyohogaV and State ot 0hio, have inventednew and useful Im rovements in Paper Bags, of which the ollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of peper bags which may be celled bellows sided sotohel bottom bags, such in general character es the be shown and described in reissued 'Letters stent #10,083 ldated April 11, 1881; end my'objeet is to so construct such bags that the bottom may be readily folded without undue strain; that they may have o smoothly pasted bottom inside of the bag,-eml that they moy have bottom which is strengthened end more seitely sealed by doubling over portions of the bottom, and by melting the proportion of 'the lest folded portions ofthe bottom itz. soci-r e manner that they will overlop the first folded portions ot the bot-toni.
'he method of molfmg this vpeper beg consists im melting o, bellowssided blerilr provided with two slits iii the bellows fold et the end of the blank. which is to term tbe bottom. Then o portion of the blank is .o @ned u to forrou the bottom resultin in the develo ing of the welllmown inside tri- ,onguler fo ds, therebyspreeding outwardly ,the two bellows side-ods, form side flops, and, folding down the two end-toldo, or tleps, mterleppmg one below the other,
peste being applied between these irsterlepping folds; then the two side-flops ore pro- T@ideal with paste ond folded over upon the previously folded eetl-Heos, thus completing the bottom. The month end of the tube may be provided. with so? oit the wellloiown throne notches or lips, if desired.
In the drawings, re l is e.. 'otive View of the bog bloeit in .eeterigolor form, sind provided with 'tout' slits in the bottom eed. Figs. 2, 3 end. pleo, side end ed views, respective of the bleek oi showing the bleek .sed into bellowssided ltube form. u 5, 6 E" show plan, side ed ood .lewe respecto-"ef o" the bellows sided le l'. with the 1ev two sideileg.; oe two endweps Fig. 8 e he bottom dat ertiolly folded, io noie? ' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 18, 1912;
Application led'ctober 26, 1911. Serial No. 658,824.
pleted bag, showing the bag otpened up.V
Fig. 11 is a perspective View of the/inner portion of the bottom of the bog, the tube portion of the bag being broken away. Fi l2 shows a modified form of slitted blsm.
Inthe figures :-l 12 represents the blank.
13 and lo represent the bellows folds.
l-lshow two slits out in the bottom end and at each side of the blank, extending from the bottom end of the blank inwardly e short distance. n
16 represents the first end-iep and 17 the second end flap.
i8 ood. 19 are the talos of the two sideleps.
Qtshows e crease formed across the bellows tube, and il shows oost-lier crease which is preferably made in the blank and in edvonoeof the crease 20, equal to the depth of the bellows folds 13mm.
23 end 24g show the partly developed inside trioogulor folds.
25 shows o. lineot 'peste on the endep 16, and 26 2'2" show lines of poste in Fig. 8, printed on'the folded down endsilopsor pasting the sidelsps.
The melting' of the tour slits in the 'blank is preferably' denen/bile the peperdrown met the welllmown tubetorming apparatus, and. while it is in reotoogolor "torni, as shown in Fig. l; these slits ore mode in the bellows sides of the bloeit, between the longitudinal fold lines thereo'. They ere disposed in generally longitmlioel relation to tbe beg blonl. They may, however, be
Gereed, or may be inclined es shows by the bloot; thus decoratie side wings of 1 .he eno. i@ eno l?, woes ,.e.. Y down C+- we oor-oss the blogo lines Q8 and /Ll ofthe side They thus .eroe to 1f torce the hinge portions et the side'lops, er1-d. being doubled over with those flaps in com,s loting the bag' bottom, they form -e position shown in .-3, ending lit@ safety sealing flaps to securely seal the side edges and corners ofthe bag bottom against leakage.l
The end aps 16 ahi'l'd'17 are made long- 4portion of one o the flaps. 'These inter- `lapping portions form a reinforcing band which extends entirely across the bottom of the bag in its longest direction; and also extends across and reinforces the hinge lines 28 vand 29 and the base of the side flaps.
The tabs'18 4and 19 yare preferably proportioned sothat when folded down upon the end fla s, as shown in Fig; 9, they are wider than'tiie reinforcing band formed byl thc interlapping ends of the end flaps. Lines of paste 26 and 27 extend across the said band, and also extend on opposite sides of that band to the sides of the bag bottom, as shown in Fig. 8, thus uniting the side iiaps to the end flaps in such a Wa as tovreinforce the bottom of the bag to est advantage, over a large proportion of its surface. This interlap ing and reinforcing arrangement of the aps produces a strong, flat, tight and smooth bottom without making the side flaps long enough lto meet or nterlap at the center of the' bag; thus enabling a correspondingly shorter blank to be employe and thereby economizing in mate- -rial without sacrifice of strength or utility.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent is n l. As a new artlcle of manufacture, a
aper bag of the class specied, having its lliottom forming side flaps folded upon the -.paper bag of the class specified havin lsaid side iiaps terminating in single .tabs
i outside of its end flaps, the said side flaps having a plurality of plies crossing their respective hinge portions, forming safety inner portion of the bottom, the outer portion of the bottom being formed by side {iaps each having a plurality of plies across its hin e portion, terminating in single ply tabs o a width greater than the interlapping 1portion of the end iiaps.
3. s a new article of manufacture, 'a
it bottom'formed of end flaps and'side apsl, the end aps overlappin each other across the bottom of the bag any extending beyond the hinge lines of the side flaps, 'the 'said side flaps terminating in lsingle ply tabs pasted upon the outside'of the end flaps.
4. As a new.` article of manufacture, a paper ba of the class specified having-its bottom ormed of end aps overlapping each other and pasted together across substantially thev ent-ire width of the bag, the said end flaps extending into and forming reinforcing plies for the side flaps, and the Ply asted flatly upon the outside of the end aps.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscrlbmg witnesses.
