UNYEED STATES PATENT @FFIGE.
STANISLAUS PALMOWSKY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB TO THE AMERICAN TOBACCO COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANISLAUS PAL- MOWSKY, subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigarettedachines, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in cigarette machines and has special reference to the holding attachment or foot particularly adapted for use in that part of the machine where the tip of the cigarette is applied.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus partly in section, Fig. 2 is an end view looking from left to right at Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken section of part of the foot or presser mechanism.
The device is particularly adapted for use with the cork tipping machine set forth in my co-pending U. S. patent application, Serial No. t6 l,890.
1 is the frame of the machine and 5 a suitable table upon which the cigarette is placed by the usual feeding mechanism.
6 is a plunger operated by the lever 7 pivoted at 8 and operated by a suitable cam 9 at the lower end.
10 is a driving gear meshing with the gear 11 mounted upon the bearing 12 and carrying the cam 13.
14 is a standard carrying the arm 15 provided with the extension 16 and leg 17 having at its lower extremity-the foot or presser 18. A suitable opening is preferably cutthrough this presser or foot to admit the finger 19 carried by the spring 20 suitably secured to the other side of the foot as shown at 21. The object of this finger is to press upon the cigarette in advance of the presser or foot 18 so that the cigarette is held on the table 5 under the slight tension of the spring while the plunger pushes itinto position, after which the presser and foot 18 firmly descends upon the cigarette and securely holds it in position for tipping. From this it will be seen that the slight tension of the presser finger is not suflicient to cause the cigarette to buckle or crinkle when struck by the plunger, whereas the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 510,606.
necessary pressure of the foot is applied in time for the tipping operation.
Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a cigarette making machine, a support for the cigarette, and means for holding the cigarette on said support comprising 'a yielding element and a rigid element, the
cigarette engaging surfaces of which are disposed in parallel relation to the surface of the support upon which the cigarette rests, and the yielding element arranged to act in advance of the rigid element.
2. In a cigarette machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a support for the cigarette, an opposed presser member to hold the cigarette on said support, and resilient means arranged in advance of and yieldingly engaging the cigarette in the same direction in which it is subsequently engaged by the presser member, substantially as described. v
3. In a cigarette machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a support for the cigarette, an opposed presser member to hold the cigarette on said support, and a spring arranged in advance of and yieldingly engaging the cigarette in the same direction in which it is subsequently engaged by the presser member, substantially as described.
4. In a cigarette machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a stationary support for the cigarette, an opposed presser member to hold the cigarette on said support, and resilient means arranged in advance of and yieldingly engaging the cigarette in the same direction in which it is subsequently engaged by the presser member, substantially as described.
In a cigarette machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a support for the cigarette, an opposed presser member to hold the cigarette on said support, and resilient means carried by said presser member and arranged in advance of and yieldingly engaging the cigarette in the same direction in which it is subsequently engaged by the presser member, substantially as described.
6. In a cigarette tipping machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a support I upon which the cigarette is placed and a presser member being adapted to retain said cigarette upon said support and in combination resilient means whereby said cigarette is engaged in advance of the full en gagement of said presser member and a plunger adapted to shift said cigarette into position while said cigarette is engaged by said resilient means. 1
7 In a cigarette tipping machine, a cigarette holding device comprising a support upon which the cigarette is placed and a presser member being adapted to retain said cigarette is engaged'by said resilient means,
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
