To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT D. GATCHEL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and improved Garbage-Can Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.

My invention involves a new and improved form of holder for garbage cans, the construction and arrangement being such that the frame in which the holder is suspended is designed to be carried by a fence or wall in an opening therein, the receptacle of the holder swinging from one side of the wall to the other whereby the can is accessible from both sides of the fence or wall.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved form of holder for garbage cans made up of a frame and a receptacle, the receptacle being movably mounted within the frame and the frame being adapted to be positioned within a suitable opening in a fence or wall whereby when the receptacle is swung to one side of the opening the can may be conveniently removed therefrom, the receptacle when on the opposite side of the wall being protected by a cover and being held in convenient position for use and kept out of view.

A further object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device of the class specified adapted to hold a garbage can in suitable position for use and protected by a movable cover, the receptacle being adapted to be moved to another position whereby the operation of swinging opens the doors on one side thereof in order to permit convenient withdrawal of the can for emptying.

A further object of my invention is to provide a new and improved device of the class specified comprising a receptacle adapted to receive a garbage can which is movably mounted within an opening in a fence or wall, the receptacle being movableY to two positions, there being a cover adapted to close the top of the receptacle when in one position and there being an auxiliary cover within the first cover and movably mounted whereby this second cover will closely engage the top of the can, thereby doing away Specification of Letters Patent.

My device is made up of a suitable frame l, together with a receptacle 2 which is hingedly mounted thereon at 3 by any suitable means, the receptacle being adapted tov swing about the hinges 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2 or 3. The frame l is preferably made up of channel-irons and is adapted tobe positioned within an opening in a fence or wall 4, the side walls of the opening being received within the sides of l formed, the sheet-iron, however, no-t eXtend- A,

ing across the opening between the members 5, 6, thereby providing an open space through which the garbage can 8 of any desired form of construction and which is contained within the receptacle 2` may be y* withdrawn therefrom as shown particularly in Fig. 3. The bottom of the receptacle 2 may be conveniently closed by a wooden member 9 whilethe top of this receptacle is left open; from the above description of the receptacle it will be noted that it is substantially semi-cylindrical in cross section, a portion thereof being curved in order to engage the curved sides of the can 8. The U-shaped members 5, 6, may be conveniently braced or spaced apart by means of vertically eXtending members 10, l1, positioned at the ends of these members.

In Fig. 3 that portion of the fence 4 to I the left is designated the inside of the fence and that to the right the outside.

A suitable cover 12 which may be of any desired form of construction but which is preferably as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is' hingedly supported at 13 to the top side of t-he frame 1, the sides of the cover being downwardly extending as at 14, 15, whereby a pocket is formed adapted to receive aV movable cover 16 having along an intermediate portion the holding Vmember 17 with over-turned upper portions 18 which rest on a support 19 secured to the lower side of the partition 20 within the pocket.

The top of the cover is preferably protected Y curved shape of the receptacle and serve asV braces for the frame thereof as well as guards in that th ey prevent the frame from injury if the can is placed therein in a rough manner. v

The open side of the receptacle 2 is provided with a plurality of covers 23, 24, which swing to the opposite sides of this receptacle, being mounted thereon by means of any suitable hinges 25, 26. A bifurcated lug 27 is secured adjacent the hinged edge on outside of each of the covers 23, 24, each lug being adapted to receive a link v28 which is pivotally secured to the lug as at 29, the other end of each link being in movable engagementwith a suitable ring 30 or any equivalent device permitting movement of t-he linkrelatively to the frame 1. As shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 when the receptacle with the can therein is in position on the inside of the fence, the links 2S keep the doors 23, 24, in closed position; however, when the receptacle is swung to the outside of the fence or wall, the doors are brought into open position, as shown particularly in Fig. 3, thus permitting easy withdrawal of the garbage can 8, the doors being again closed when the receptacle is swung to the inside with the empty can in posit-ion there in. The upper outer corner of each of the doors is notched as at 52, 53, in order to provide for movement of the doors out of engagement with the handles 50, 51, which eX- tend from within the receptacle.

The cover 12 is movable about the hinges 13, the cover normally resting on the brackets 22, as shown in Fig. 3. The movable cover 16 is adapted to rest on top of the can 8 when in the position shown in Fig. 2, this cover being movable on its support 19 as the can swings from one position to the other, the movement of the cover being convenientlyeifected by a knob or protuberance 30 carried on the top of the U-shaped-member 5. By raising the cover 12 the cover 16 is also lifted and the can is in convenient lposition to receive any material; the cover 12 is then dropped, the cover 16 resting closely on top of the can 8 and preventing any disagreeable odo-rs arising from the material contained within the can. When it is desired to empty the can the receptacle 2 is swung to the outside of the fence or wall 4 by pulling outwardly and downwardly on the round projecting ends of the diagonally placed handles, the outward movement of the receptacle opening the doors 23, 24,` and bringing the can into convenient position for handling; the can being emptied it is again inserted in the receptacle and the receptacle is swung back to Vposition onthe inside of the fence or wall.

In order to provide against the receptacle being used as a means of access to a yard or building on the inside of the fence I have provided a suitable locking means consisting of a pivoted hasp 40 which is secured to the member 14 of the cover, this hasp being adapted to engage with a hook-shaped member 41 secured to the upper outer side of the receptacle 2 whereby when the parts are in engagement the receptacle can not be drawn to the outside of the fence, thus preventing withdrawal of the can and entrance into the yard by raising the cover 12.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be noted that I have provided a new and useful holder for a garbage can which does away with the necessity of carting the can from one side of the fence to the other in order to empty it, the holder itself receiv` ing the can and keeping it out of sight and doing away with the possibility of disagreeable odors therefrom.

Of course the various parts of the device may be made of different materials and in different sizes in order to adapt it to larger or smaller cans without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a frame, a receptacle movably mounted within the frame and adapted to swingkfrom one position to another, the receptacle being adapted to contain a'suitable vessel, doors on one side of the receptacle, and means whereby when the receptacle is in one position the doorsV will be closed and when in another position the doors will be opened. 2. A device of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be positioned within an opening in a wall or Jfence, a receptacle hingedly mounted within the frame, a cover hingedly mounted adjacent the top of the frame, the said receptacle being adapted to be swung Jfrom one sideV of the frame to the other, the said cover closing the receptacle when in one position, a plurality of doors carried by the receptacle, and means connecting'the doors and the frame whereby when the receptacle is swung the doors are opened, thereby exposing the 1nterior of the receptacle.

3. A device of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be positioned within an opening in a fence or wall, a receptacle hingedly carried within the frame and movable about the said hinges whereby the upper port-ion of the receptacle may be accessible from either side of the fence or wall, together with a cover carried adjacent the top of the frame and adapted to close the receptacle when it is in one position, doors movably mounted on the receptacle, means whereby the doors may be opened when the receptacle is moved to another position, thereby exposing the interior of the receptacle, the said means closing the doors when the receptacle is returned to the first position.

4. A device of the class described comprising a frame adapted to be supported in an upright position, a receptacle hingedly mounted within the frame, a @over movably carried adjacent the top of the frame and adapted to close the said receptacle when it is in one position, a plurality of doors movably mounted on the receptacle, together with means engaging the doors and the frame whereby when the receptacle is swung to another position the said doors will be opened.

5. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a receptacle movably supported within the frame, the said receptacle being adapted to be swung to either side of the frame, a cover movably supported adjacent the top of the receptacle for closing the receptacle, means for supporting the cover, a plurality of doors on the receptacle, together with means whereby when the receptaclefis swung from one position to the other the doors will be opened and the interior of the receptacle exposed, the cover remaining in normal position.

6. A device of the class described comprising a frame, a receptacle adapted to cont-ain a can hinged at a bottom portion of the bottom of the frame, a cover movably supported adjacent the top of the frame and adapted to cover the said receptacle, a movable cover within the first cover adapted to close the top of the can, means for supporting the covers in such position, a plurality of doors on the said receptacle, and means engaging the doors and the frame whereby when the receptacle is swung from one position to the other, the said covers remaining in normal position, the doors will be opened and the interior of the receptacle and the can exposed.

7. A device of the class described comprising a frame adapted to'be positioned within a fence or wall, a receptacle having two open sides hinged within the said frame and to the bottom thereof, the receptacle swinging from side to side, the receptacle being adapted to contain a can, a cover for one side of the receptacle hingedly mounted adjacent the top of the frame, another cover movably mounted within the first cover and adapted to close the top of the can, doors on the receptacle, the said doors being movable in order to expose the interior of the receptacle whereby the can may be withdrawn, there being coperating means on the hinged cover and the receptacle in order to prevent movement of the receptacle from a certain position.

8. A device of the class described comprising a :trame adapted to be positioned within a wall or fence, a receptacle, adapted to contain acan, hinged at an intermediate portion to the bottom of the said frame, a cover hingedly supported adjacent the top of the frame and adapted to cover the receptacle when it is on one side of the frame, a movable cover within the rst cover adapted to close the top of the can, a plurality of doors on the receptacle, means between the doors and the frame whereby when the receptacle is swung from the said position, the doors will be opened, thereby exposing the interior of the receptacle, together with means carried by the frame forl supporting the rst cover in position when the receptacle is swung, there being coperating means between thecover and the receptacle to prevent movement of the receptacle.

9. The combination of a suit-able frame, a receptacle movablyv mounted within the frame and adapted to swing from one side thereof to the other, doors on the receptacle, means whereby the doors will be held open when the receptacle is in one position and will be held closed when in another position, together with a cover carried by the frame and adapted to' close the receptacle when it is in the second position, and coperating parts on the receptacle and the cover whereby the receptacle is held against movement and the doors against opening.

10. The combination of a suitable frame, a receptacle movably mounted within the frame and adapted to swing from one side thereof to the other, doors on the receptacle, means whereby the doors will be held open when the receptacley is in one position and will be held closed when in another position, a cover carried by the frame for closing the receptacle when it is in the second position,
