'hpplicetiou filed January 27, lem. derlei No. 13,37?.
To all 'whom t may concern f '4 Be it known that l, Eownun J. DOLAN, a
citizen of., the United States, residing :it-
Philadelphia, in the Stute of Pennsylvania, have invented .certain new und useful Im .provemciitspin Fuel; und I do hereh7 declaire the following to be' s ful-l clear, und
Vreference marked thereon, which forni s pert of this specicstion.
This invent-ion relates to certain new?.1 und useful improvements in the production of fuelsnd more especially fuel in the foi-in desiwned for use as s fire kindler.
The invention hss for its object .the pro` vision ot n simple, inexpensive und ellicient means for the utilization of newspapers and other similar refuse materiel as s. medium for the burning of fuel oil or otherl oils of s viscous nature and of proper consistency.
that s newspaper folded end held in o, compact bundle, one end or' the bundle being inserted in s' receptacle containing oils carefully selected for consistency, viscosity' und volatility. .Fuel oil has been found to be the best Y adapted to the purpose. The bundle will take up the oil by capillary attrsctiomthe oil thus taken uplbeing held within spaces between the sheets, the spaces beingformed by the folding, in addition td the oil that is held in the body of the paper itself. When the bundle or package thus prepiired is kept within a suitable receptacle for considerable time, the package Wlll hecome substantiel in -form and, when the holding means used for retaining the bundle in shape when constructed is released, the package will still hold its form.
The essential object o the invention resides in the provisionof a. package of this character retained as will be hereinafter eX- plained.
The invent-ion is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, Which,.with the numerels of reference marked thereon, -orm s part of this specification und in which drawings Figure l is n perspective view of a newspeper ns it appears zitter the first folding in preparing it for the package, in -which the paper is shown folded along a line excenter'of the sheet. Fig. 2 is e like vie-win tending transversely along the longitudinal which the paper in the form shown in Figi,
l is shown :is folded by itself along the line of its longitudinal center. Fig. 3 is s per# 'spective view of'the bundle complete, and Fig. 4 is s transverse'section upon the line 4,--4 of Fig. 3.
Reference now being had to thedetails* oi the drawings by numeral, 1 represents the newspsper from which the package is formed, the peper being firstfolded trans versely across the longgritudinell center of the sheet. The sheet is again folded elongthe line extending through the longiislinnl.
center of the sheet, thus reducing the form sl'ioun4 in Fig. 2, The s eet is thenolded 4 in turn, first slung s line extending through the longitudinal center ofthe folded sheet, shown in Fig. 2, sind again folded along the line extending transversely through the longitudinal center of the folded sheet and this folding repeated along lines extending longitudinally through the sheet until a As the result ot experiment, l have found :isv will hereinafter appear, are produced,- wheress, if folded compuctly by machinery,
the sheets composing 'the bundle would brought into close Contact throughout thclr entire length und the `oil spaces which are required would be eliminated;
I here found that mucilsge such iis com-f menigr used upon gum strips, While soluble in waiter is not soluble in the cless of oils' which l use und, therefore, find o gum strip, such as indicated, to be c very cheap, econoinicnl and convenient Way of holding the package in form until saturated und have shown this means in my drawings, although it is et once evident that other means, such- :is cord passed around the package, could be used if desired.
The package thus formed is charged with,`
the fuel or other like-oil by insertin end of the package in 'n vessel containing the oil and the paper f which the package is composed is thus t'oroughly saturated with the oil and the interet-loes or chambers, which, v'vhen' the paper is folded 'as described, are produced throughout thepeckage, are filled with oil. The package having" thus been charged with oil itsl full capacity is allowed to drain for a sufficient length of time to permit the oil carried by the end of tnefpackage which has been inserted in the oil chamber to be drained back into 'the oil receptttoi'e, and the package is, after this treatxrxent,`stored Within a suitable receptacle in readiness for use when desired. I have found that, when the package has been thus stored for a suitable length of time, the package will thereafter remain in a solidsubstantial form, even although the mezlns for holding it together is dispensed Wit the packages are placedupon the grate and coal (either anthracite or bituminous) is ,portion of the bundle and the inner layers placed directly upon the package, no 'other kindling Whatever being required. In burning, the outer portion of the bundle is x'irst consumed, the oil contained within the outer spaces being iirst to ignite, While the heat imparted therefrom will' serve to generate as from the oil contained Within ,thev inner are in turn consumed,'one after the other uintil the entire package is consumed, by
which time the heat generated. by the oil and bur .gases serve to ignite the coal.
ile I have described myf invention in the nature of a lire lndlmg device, it is In use in kndling fires, one or morel of :theme62 also evident that it can be used as a fuel.
The result of rny experiments have demoustrated it is' equally lWell adapted fortuel` purposes.
Having thus described my invention, l
What I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. An article of fuel comprising one or more papers folded into a compact bundle, the paper composing the package and the spaces between the sheets of the package being iilled with fuel oil or other oil of suitable body, viscosity, volatility and consistency, substantially as shown and dc'-4 scribed and for thepurpose specified.
EDWARD J. DOLAN.
