Be it known that I, HAMILTON C. BATES, citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail- Buflers, of which the following is a specication.

The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class specified, which has features of novelty and advantage.

Referrin to the drawin s the buffer -lis t e customary bu er preferably soft and resilient having a handle 2- secured to the face of the buffer-top 3 which face is preferably slightly curved from end to end. The polishing surface -4- of the customary buffer is made of chamois, and soon becomes soiled or hard with usage.v

I provide an eXtra polishing material -5- preferably of chamois, which is adapted to t over the chamois on the buffer. Said extra chamois is secured in place by an endless band -6- preferably made of metal, which is slid up over said chamois. The upper edge of said band as at 7- when in place extends outside of the top -3- of the buffer, conforms in shape with said top and snugly tits outside of the buffertop, being flush with the face thereof, that is, Hush with the top of the buffer top -3-. The band 6 is contracted toward its lower edge, so that said lower edge as at -8- tightly grips the eXtra chamois cover and securely holds the same in place. My band -6- may be tapering in cross-section so that it has an inside flat surface, or have a contracted lower edge, as shown in the modification of the same in Fig. 4 of the drawings so that while the lower edge of the band tightly grips thev eXtra chamois cover, the top edge of the band may slide up outside of the buffer top, and while it is being slid up outside of the buEer top, the extra chamois cover is at the same time being drawn tighter. y

It will be noticed that the band -6- is curved from one end to the other, so that it has a slight spring action, which assists in holding the band and eXtra chamois cover in place.

By the term-curved from one end to the otherit is meant that the two sides of the endless band -6- are curved upward in the center thereof. The results of this band -6- being thus curved upward are that when the band is being slid over the buffer, one presses up on the ends of the band so that the space within the band is enlarged, so that the band slips easier onto the bulfer. This curved feature allows a continual spring action to hold the eXtra chamois in place on the buffer as soon as one releases his ngers from the ends of the band. An especial advantage of a band of this construction is that the edge of the eXtra chamois is entirely covered, and when my band is in place on the buffer, there are no rough surfaces whatever exposed on the buffer, which would catch or tear the finger-nails of the user.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a nail buffer, a removable polishing cover, a band having its upper edge extending outside of, and conforming in shape to, and flush with the face ofthe buffer-top, said band being curved upward in the center thereof to allow a slight spring action,

whereby said band and polishing cover are tightly held in place.
