BERT K'EISER SHRADER AND JAMES R. GILMAN, E LoUrsvILLE, KENTUCKY; SAID GILMAN ASSIGNOR To SAID sHRAnE MEASURING DEVICE.
Application filed March 2 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERT and JAMES R. GILMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the The present system therefore obviates the troublesome and tedious work in making alterations or other repairs required in skirts or other wearing apparel, whereby the latter may be accurately and properly fitted. I
Another and more import-ant object of the invention is in the means for measuring and ascertaining the irregularities of the formation of the skirt to be fitted, whereby a perfect fit may be readily obtained.
Briefly stated the invention consists of an adjustable scale composed principally of two sections slidably connected, oneof which is provided with graduation marks, means for holding the said sections in a rigid position in respect to one another, an arcuate arm forming a part of the upper end of one of said sections and operating as a guide, a foot forming a part of the lower end of the opposite member and adapted to rest upon the fioor in the operation of the device or when the parts are separated, and means for adjustably securing the sliding sections against displacement, all of which will appear from the detail description to follow: With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and de scribed and then specifically pointed out and claimed, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete invention in an ad.- justed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section taken through the slidingly connected parts of the device. Fig. 4 is a Specification of Letters Patent.

perspective view of the lower section of invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view the upper section thereof. 1
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the lower section of the device which is pro: vided with graduated marks along its surface in the usual manner to designate a scale of the ordinary character, said section having a base 2, and slidably mount-ed upon said member 1 is a slotted extension 3, the lower end of which is. provided with an engaging member 4 and works upon the lower member '1 assisting in holding the said slotted member 3 in its proper position during the adjustment of the device.
Projecting from the upper end of the member 1 is a threaded stud 5 which freely passes through the slot of the extension 3 of the device and adjustably mounted on said stud is a wing nut 6 which is adapted to be brought in binding contact with the said extension for holding the parts in an adjusted position. 7
An important feature of the invention is in the employment of a yielding curved plate 7 which is secured to the upper end of the extension 3, and is adapted to conform to the waist of the person to be fitted, said plate adapted to engage the upper edge of a skirt band for ascertaining the exact length thereof. As clearly shown the engaging member 4 not only forms the guide for the lower end of the slotted extension 3 upon the section 1 but also'operates as an indicator when the parts are properly adjusted.
In applying the. device, the wing nut is released, whereby the parts may be readily adjusted and the measurement accurately ascertained, after which the said wing nut is adjusted to cause the parts to be rigidly held in the position referred to.
As previously stated the curved plate carried by the upper end of the slotted extension 3 is of a bendable nature throughout its entire length and so as to readily conform to the contour of the waist in order that a perfect measurement of the length of the skirt to be altered may be accurately obtained, and further will properly hold the device in a position during the operation referred to.
What is claimed is:
The combination in a device such as described of a base, a stationary graduated the intermediate portion to the upper end of the sliding plate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, we affiX our signa- 15 tures, in presence of two witnesses.
BERT KEISER SHRADER. JAMES R. GILMAN.
