UNTTED STATES PATENT CLARENCE E. BA'UMER AND BERTI-IA BAUMER, OF TROY, OHIO.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE E. BAU- MER and BERTHA BAUMER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Troy, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio,
-haye invented certain new and useful Improvcments in Safety Devices for Elevators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to safety devices for elevator cars, and the principal object of the same is to provide automatically acting means that will cause the car to descend slowly in the event of the hoisting cable thereof becoming broken. In addition to control the descent of the car.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it is understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and'structural arrangements, certain preferred and practical embodiments of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of an elevator well, a car, and its hoisting mechanism, showing one embodiment of the safety device. Fig. 2 is a detail view in side elevation of the rack gripping mechanism for controlling the descent of the car. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of one end of said mechanism. Fig. 4: is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the combined core and air cushions for the rack gripping mechanism. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a variation of the invention. Fig. 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the rack gripping mechanism used in connection with the structure shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a door operated circuit breaker for automatically operating the rack gripping mechanism when the car door is open. Fig. 8 is a detail view in side elevation of a combined Specification of Letters Patent.

ated circuitbreaker shown in connection with the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, '3 and 4 thereof, l2 designate the walls of the well which are provided with the usual vertical racks 34. Beams 5 span the top of the well and support the bearings 6 in which shaft 7 of pulley 8 is mounted. The elevator car 9 has supporting beams 10 at its top to which the usual cable fastener 11 is attached. A hoisting cable 12 extends from fastener 11 to and over pulley 8 in a manner well understood.
rior of the magnet into two compartments 1 l15. The outer end of each compartment has a head 16 fitted air tight there over-,said head being provided with a central outstanding bearing 17 through which a piston rod 18 slides, the inner end of said rod being equipped with a piston 19. Each head is also provided with a pipe 20 that communicates with the compartments, the
outer end thereof being equipped with a controlling valve 21. Adjacent their inner end, each compartment is equipped with another outwardly projecting pipe 22 provided at its outer end with a controlling valve 23.
A supporting and guiding frame 39 is mounted in one wall of the car 9 and has I with well racks 3 by means of the pressure a bar 40 slidably mounted therein. Said bar has one end projecting through the wall of the car and equipped with a roller 41 that is normally held in contact with a conductor rod 42 that is arranged parallel of a spring 43 that is wound upon bar 40 and has one end bearing against an abutment pin 44 that passes transversely through bar 40, the other end of said spring and having a conductor strip 46 set in one end portion thereof. A binding post 47 is carried by said strip 46. A pair of standards 48 are mounted on plate 45, said standards supporting a shaft 49 on which a circuit closing lever 50 is mounted, one end of said lever being provided with a contact lug 51. The contact end of lever 50 is provided with a binding post 52, and adjacent said contact end, a spring 53 connects lever 50 with plate and exerts a pressure tending to hold the contact end of lever in contact with strip 46. The other end of lever 50 is provided with a tripping arm 54 that is in the path of movement of the door 55 of car 9 so that when said door is open, its lower edge will contact with arm 54 and rock lever 50 to raise its lug 51 from strip 46 against the tension of spring 53.
A battery 56 has a circuit wire connection 57 with bearing 6 and another circuit wire connection 58 with conductor rod 42. A switch 59 controls said wires. 'One end of magnet 12 has a circuit wire connection 60 with cable fastener 11, the other end of said magnet being connected with a circuit wire 61 that extends through the car 9 and connects with the binding post 47 of conductor strip 46 that is seated in floor plate 45. Binding post 52 of the contact end of lever 50 has a wire connection 62 with hand operated bar 40. This arrangement provides a circuit from battery 56 through bearing 6, pulley 7 and cable 12 to one end of magnet 12, and from battery 56 through conductor rod 42, roller 41 and bar 40 to wire 62, lever 50, conductor strip 46, wire 61 to the opposite end of magnet 12. It will therefore be seen that normally magnet 12 is energized so that its oppositely projecting piston rods or cores 18 are caused tohold the frame that supports gears 30 out of contact with the well racks. And also that the magnet attracts collars 33 so that rods 35 are also held by the magnet against the tension of springs 38. In the event of the cable 12 breaking, the circuit will be broken, releasing piston rods 18 so that springs 38 will automatically slide plates 26 out-ward and cause gear wheels 30 to mesh with the well racks. As the car descends, piston rods 18 will be reciprocated in the compartments of magnet 12 through their eccentric connections with disks 31 and such reciprocations will be opposed by the air within said compartments acting upon the piston heads 19, causing the reciprocations to be slow and "similarly affecting gear wheels 30, thereby causing the descent of the car 9 to be slow and gradual. Obviously the cushioning of the pistons is caused by the alternate intake and exhaust of the air in the ends of the compartments through pipes 2022.
In connection with the above described automatically acting feature of the invention, it will be understood that in the event of cable 12 slipping or if the car be caused to fall in any other way without the circuit being broken, bar 40 may be manipulated from within the car by pulling on its han dle 40 so that roller 41 will be separated from conductor rod 42, thereby breaking the circuit and causing the gears 30 to engage with the well racks.
The invention also provides means whereby the circuit is broken by an open door. As has been explained, tripping arm 54 of lever 50 is in the path of movement of door 55, so that when said door is open, it causes arm 54 to rock lever 50 so that contact lug 51 is separated from conductor strip 46.
In the modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the actuating rods 64 of the plates 26 have an armature 65 at their free end, said armatures being normally held to the poles of the horseshoe magnets 66-66. A separate cushion cylinder 67 is provided for each piston, said cylinders having valve controlled pipes 6869 at their ends. One of the magnets 66 has a circuit wire connection 70 between one of its poles and the cable fastener 11, and the two magnets have opposite poles connected by a circuit wire 71. One pole of magnet 66 has a wire connection 72 with the frame 39 of manual operable circuit breaker bar 40. In this modified form of the invention, bar 40 is provided with a pin 78 that is engaged by the slotted end 74 of a tripping lever 7 5 that is pivotally connected to frame 39 and has its free end projecting into the path of movement of the car door 55 so that when said door 55 is open, it rocks lever 75 and thereby slides bar 40 so that its roller 41 is out of contact with conductor rod 42.
The mechanism of the modified form of the invention performs the same functions as that described in connection with the preferred form of the inventionthat is, automatically controls the descent of the elevator car in the event'of cable 12 breaking; provides for the circuit being broken manually by sliding bar 40 in frame 39, and provides means for automatically breaking the circuit when the car door is open.
