Description

@tutti @wie BENJAMIN RICHARD DEACON, CE MONTREAL, CANADA.
Letters Patent No. 101,833, dated April 12, 1870.
IMPRQVED COAL-BOX.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the-same .To altwhom fit may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMlN RICHARD DnAcoN, of the city'of Montreal, in' the district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Dominion o f Canada, painter, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Coal-Boxes, 85o. ,fand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ot' the same, reference being had-to the annexed drawings, where- Figure l represents a partsection of the safe,
Figure 2 represents an end elevation of. the safe.
This invention has for its object the construction of a coal-box or safe, in a neat form, which embraces the advantages of keeping a large quant-ity of coal on hand in any required place, and, at the same time, ob-
viates the difiiculty found in reaching down into a deep box to extract the coal therefrom, and the loss of having a large portion 'of the small or powdered coa-l left remaining or accumulated at the bottom as rubbish, when, had it been used in due proportion with the large, it would be beneficial as fuel, `the box being capable of being made to conform' in external appearace to any article of furniture, having cubical capacity commensurate with the amount of coal required to be kept on hand at one. time, such, for example, as drawers, a sideboard, ahook-case, or the like.
In the drawings- YSimilar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Letter a is the outside shell of the coal-safe.
b, the ordinary bottom, above which is arranged the double inclined inner bottom c c', placed at suitable angles. l y
d is a regulating board, placed on the front inner side of the shell a, by means of which the flow of coal to the mouth e may be regulated.
The board d may be either xed in its position or made adjustable at will before the safe is filled.
' The door or opening by which the coal is taken out is shown at f.
The top or cover g may be arranged with a drawer, for ordinary purposes, above or below it.
In the space existing between the inclined bottom c and outer bottom 'b a drawer-may also be placed for kindling wood, &c.
The safe being arranged substantially as described, it may be filled to the top,:as indicated by the crooked dotted line at the upper part of iig. 2.
The 'coals are prevented from flowing out of' the mouth e by the' action of the regulating-board d and second inclined lbottom c' any faster than required, as
.shown in iig.- 1.
On opening the door j, the coal-shovel h may be iutroduced,'and, as the small or powdered coal ,more readily finds its Way to the bottom it is takenv out in ,due proportion with thelarge.
Ihe bottom of thebox may be curved, so as to make more room, and the safe may be used for holding grain and other substances as well as coal.
Having now described the construct-ion and operation ot' my invention, to which I have given the name of DeaconsAnthracite Coal-Safe, I beg to state .that I disclaim all other forms of coal-boxes or safes or mouth e, withdoor f, all working together substani tially in the manner and for the purpose described.
BENJAMIN. RICHARD DEACON.
