FLUSHING-VALVE-OPERATING MECHANISM.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. SoHUL'rE, a citizen o-f the United States, residing at Trenton, county of Mercer, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flushing-Valve-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improved op erating devices for flushing valves.
Ihe object of the invention is to simplify constructions of this character and to provide a reliable and eflicient device capable of performing the function of operating said valve.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a part of a tank with a flushing valve in place therein, and showing my improved operating device associated therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detail.
1 represents the wall of a tank arranged to contain water.
2 is an outlet ordinarily located in the base of the tank.
3 represents what is termed the'overflow pipe adjacent to the outlet and associated with the same in such a manner that when the water in the tank reaches the level of the upper end of the overflow pipe, it will run out through the latter.
4 represents a flushing valve arranged to control the outlet 2.
5 is a stem carried by the valve 4. 6 is a guide bracket therefor mounted on the overflow pipe 3.
7 is the usual eye at the upper end of the stem 5.
S is a link, the lower end of which passes through the eye 7 and is upset, or bent, so that it cannot be pulled out of said eye. The upper end of the link 8 is secured to a lever of novel formation. This lever is preferably of the bell-crank type and coniprises a long arm 9 and a yoke-end 10 which partially embraces the upper end of the overflow pipe. 3. 11 is a pivot passing through said yoke-end 10 and through the upper end of the overflow pipe so as to pivotally connect said yokeend with said pipe, whereby the latter will act as a support therefor.
12 is the second arm of the bell-crank lever.
13 is a manually operable lever pivotally mounted in the wall of the tank 1, the outer end of the pivotal mounting therefor carrying a suitable handle 14 by which the lever arm 13 may be swung.
15 is a link connecting the end of the arm 12 with the end of the lever 13. As shown, the lever 13 points toward the overflow pipe 3 so that when the free end of said lever is swung by the handle in either direction, it will, through the link 15 and arm 12, swing the arm 9 upwardly, thereby liftino the valve 4 from its seat in the outlet 2. Ian the form shown, the valve 4 is of the float type, whereby, when the latter has been unseated, it will float up until it h its the bracket 6, and will not fully descend until the tank has been fully emptied, or substantially so, whereupon said float valve 4 will close the outlet 2, following which the tank 1 may be again lled in the usual manner.
It will be observed that the foregoing de- .scription is of an exceedingly simple construction in which the overflow pipe operates as a standard, or support, for an ingeniously formed lever, the construction of the latter permitting it to be connected in a very simple and effective way with the overflow pipe, and, in turn, with the valve.
While various modifications may be resorted to, it should be understood that I have `shown and described the invention in its preferred form.
While the arm 12 might be integrally formed with the arm 9, it is preferable that said arm 12 be made slidably adjustable on the arm 9 so that the device may be adjusted to allow for any variation of centers that may occur between the outlet pipe and the pivotal center of the operating lever 13 in different tanks.

What I claim is:
In an apparatus of the character described, a tank, an outlet, a valve therefor, an overflow pipe, means for operating the valve comprising an operating member mounted on the tank, a lever arm at one side of said overflow pipe, said lever arm having a crooked extension at its rear end partially embracing Said pipe, a pivotal connection for said arm engaging said arm on one side of said pipe and the crooked extension on the other side of said pipe, a second arm monntedon the irst mentioned arm at an angie thereto and adjustable toward and from the pivoted portion thereof, means whereby the Iirst mentioned arm may be f connected to n valve, and means whereby the second mentioned arm may be connected to l0 said operating devlce.
