ne a known um i, vim. unreal, cai;
zen of. the United States, residing at ,i Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and Stateof Kansas, have invented certalnnew andv useful Improvements in Combined Latches and Handles, of which the following isa speciiication. .y
This invention comprehends certain new and the invention has for its primary ob ject an improved device of this character which will be 'simple in construction and` eflicient in operation, the parts kbeing few in number and capable being easily manu .v factured. 1
Wit-h this and other objects in view, as Will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists (rf-certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts'that I 'shall' hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be Vhad to the following de-4 scription and' accompanying drawing, in which: A
Figure l is a perspective vievv of a combined latch and handle embodying the improveniente of my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the-line -m of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a rear view; Fig. 4 is adetail perspective vienT 'of the locking pin; and, Fig.
` 5 is a fragmentary perspective of the latch stem. A
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi-l cated inl all theviews of the accompanying drawingby the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the Inumeral l `signat'es a door which in the' present in- /s ance is a'svvingi'ng door, but which'may'be ,a sliding door instead, and 2 designates-,the -idooriframev A casing 3 is vsecured inv any desired Way vto the face ofthe door 1, and a latch` stem fils' mounted for alturning and longitudinally. reciprocating movement in saidcasing, the latch being provided with a loopdhandle 5 by which it may be manipulate A keeper bracket 6 is securedy to one sidel of the door frame 2 and a locking-pini is mounted for' vertical movement said,A bracket, the lower end 'of thevgpinbeing'defsigned to enter a recess Sfinjjoneend `of the latch stern 4; so as iso-engage therishoulder;
formed by one .endofl the recess to hold the. y
Rreferably the latch lin locked osition. lowerend of the ocking pin 7 is beveled as kindicated at 9, whereby it will ride over the adjoining end of the latch stern't as the latter is moved-to'locking position. f
' vIn order to prevent the locking pin from being jarred fromits place and 10st,"as for instance when lthe device is applied to a car for a limited movement therein by, being Patenteaaanaaiaia vdoor, the pin is connected to the braclretm l 'formed-With a slot 10 'receiving a pin' ll.
The locking pin 7 is also.A formed, with a transverse slot l2 co1nniunicating`-with a' transverse slot 13 in the bracket, whereby a seal of any character may be passed through thesetransverse slots and hold the 'pin 7 in locked position. The latch stem lis formed intermediate of its ends ivvitha `'perfo ration 14, which may also acconnncdate `a seal or a padlock as in the present instance, to preyent the retraction of the-hitchv independeitly of the lockingpin 7. v In those cases Wherecit is desired that the door be susceptible of unlatching from both faces, 'the stem 4 is.; provided with a perpendicularly projecting` actuating rod 15 se4 cured thereto in any desired Way and adapts ed to Work in an angular slot16 formed i'n the door-1.l i f '1 y,
It is to be understood that my improved sel combined handle and nah-is applicable for,
for all the purposes for which a device of this character is designed.
Fromthe foregoing description in connec-l tion with the accompanying drawing, the
Aoperation of my improved latch and handle -willbe apparent. In the practical use of the device, it is only necessry to grasp the handle 5 to close the door and to simultataneously move the latch stem 4 .into the bracket 6. The 'handle 5 will, of course, in
this operation, be held in substantially perpendicular relation to the adjoining face of the door, particularly if the rod "l5 be connected to the stem l, as before specified. 4 .As 'soon as the door has been closed, and the .v
stem 4: moved into the bracket d and the registrybetween'the notch, or recess 8 of the V.handle 5 released,`,i he Weight ofthe handle 'Y .g vwill cause the stem 4, to turn about its longi-V tudinal axis, so as to bring about the proper d stem and the locking 4pin 7,1whereby the, i
los L pin will engage the stem to lock the door in closed position, this locking movement being also participated in bythe entering of the rod l5 into the vertically projecting port-ionotI the angular slot 16 that is formed in the door l. It will be understood, by reference to the drawing, that the actuating rod l5 not only serves as a handle to manipulate the latch from that side of the door which is opposite the handle 5, but that said rod 15, in the retracted position of the stem 4 will hold the handle 5 out from the door whereby it may be easily grasped, owing to the fact that the pin l5 will then be lodged in the horizontal portion of the slot 16,
Preferably, the casing 3 is made in two separate or independent sections designated A and B respectively." By this construction .and arrangement of parts, my improved combined latch and handle is equally applicable to sliding or rolling. and hinged doors. When the device is applied to a hinged door, as in the present instance, the section A is slid back to abut against the section B as illustrated in Fig. l, thereby permitting the latch-stem to beretracted preparatory to swinging the door open. But when the device is intended for use with a sliding or rolling door, it is to be understood that the section A is slid forwardly away from the section B and is secured to the door y a distance from the section B sutlicient to prevent any longitudinal movement of the latch stem, the latch stem being, with this arrangement of parts permitted to have no longitudinal movement whatever, none being necessary with a rolling or sliding door.
lVhat I claim is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a latch stem mounted for aturning and longitudinal movement therein,
in said bracket for a limited longitudinal movement therein, the latch stem being provided at one end with a shoulder for engagea handle connected to said stem, ay keeper bracket, and a locking pin mounted ment by the adjoining end of the locking pm.
2. A device of the character described,
comprising a casing, a latch stem movable longitudinally andA rotatably in the casing, a handle connected to said stem, the stem being formed at its free end with a shoulder, a keeper bracket into which said end of the stem is adapted to project, and a locking pin mounted for a limited longitudinal movement in said bracket and designed for of the latch stem, the bracket and locking pin being formed with registering transverse slots designed for the reception of a seal, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A `device of the character described, comprising a easing constructed in two separate and disconnected parts cach of which is arranged for separate attachment to a door, `a latch-stem mounted itor free movement in said casing, a loop handle connected at its 'ends to said stem, a keeper bracket, and a locking-pin mounted in said bracket for a limited longitudinal movement therein, the latch-stem being'provided at one end with a shoulder for engagen'lent by the adjoining end of the locking-pin, the combined width of the two parts of the casing being less than the distance between the two ends of the handle, whereby the two parts o1u the casing may be secured to a support in abutting relation with each other so as to permit the stem to have both a turning and a longitudinal movement, and whereby, the two parts may b'e separated and secured to a support in spaced relation to each other and in engagement with the end of the handle, respectively, so as to limit the movement of the latch-stem to a turning movement.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
