'rns ATENT orrcn THOMAS J ANKOSKY, OE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE FOUBTH T0 MICHAEL SWIECICKI, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
I NUT-CRACKING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J ANKOSKY, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Cracking Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a nut cracking device, and the objects of my invention are to provide a simple and inexpensive device for easily and quickly cracking nuts, and to provide a device of the above type that can be advantageously used in large hotels, restaurants and places where a large quan tity of nuts are cracked.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a nut cracking device that can be safely used, and to furnish the device with means for preventing fragments of the nut or shell from flying around during the cracking operation.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, partly broken away, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, partly broken away.
A device in accordance with this inven tion comprises a rectangular base plate 1 having an annular raised portion 2 provided with a rim 3 for retaining the shell of a nut when cracked upon the base plate. The raised portion 2, adjacent to the rim 3, has a cavity or pocket 4 with the walls thereof provided with converging ribs 5 that are V-shaped in cross section. The rim 3 is cut away, as at 6 whereby a nut can be easily placed in the recess or pocket 4.
Formed integral with the raised portion 2 is the base 7 of an upright 8, said upright being located at a point diametrically opposite the cut away portion 6 of the rim 3. The upright 8 has a longitudinal slot 9 and the upper end of said upright is bent at right angles and provided with a vertical sleeve 10 directly above the recess or pocket 4. Slidably mounted in the sleeve 10 is a plunger 11 having the upper end thereof provided with a cross handle 12 and the lower end thereof with a conical-shaped crushing head 13. The under side of this head has a cavity or recess 14 adapted to confront the recess or pocket 4. To prevent the plunger 11 from rotating in the sleeve 10 and to guide said plunger in its movement, the head 13 is provided with a rearwardly extending arm 15 having a portion thereof reduced or provided with flat faces, as at 16 whereby it will protrude through the slot 9 of the upright 8. Connected to the reduced end of the arm 15 by a pin or rivet 17 is a cross head 18 adapted to slide against the cylindrical upright 8. The head 18 has the inner face thereof recessed to conform to the curvature of the upright, whereby it will easily slide against the outer side of said upright.
When the plunger 11 is elevated, a nut can be easily placed in the recess or pocket 4 and by forcing downwardly upon the plunger, the shell of the nut can be cracked without crushing the kernel. In some instances, the crushing head 13 can be placed in engagement with the nut and then by striking the cross handle 12 a blow, either with the hand or a suitable instrument, the shell of the nut can be cracked.
The device in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal and of various sizes.
What I claim is:
A nut-cracking device comprising a base plate having a pocket formed in the upper face thereof, converging ribs formed on the wall of said pocket, a vertically disposed rim integral with the upper face of said base plate spaced from said pocket and having its forward portion cut away to provide an entrance for a nut, a vertically movable crushing head arranged over said pocket, and means for supporting said head.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J ANKOSKY.
Witnesses:
J os. F. EGKARD, ANNA E. Woons.
