Description

testent @emite NATHANIEL S. KETCHUM, OF MARSHALLTOWN, lIOWA.
Lette-rs Patent No. 101,273, dated March 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMNT IN HARVESTER-DROPPERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent 4and making part of the same To all whom tt 'may concern:
vBe it known that I, NATHAMEL S. KETCHUM, of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and State of' Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dropper for Harvester; and I do hereby declare that 'the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in whieh- Figure 1 is a rear view of' my improved dropper for harvest-ers.
Figure 2 is a side view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to finnish an irnproved dropper for attachment to such harvesters as are provided with an endless apron, carrier, or elevator for removing the cnt grain from the cutter platform 5 and It consists in the dropper construe-ted as hereinafter more fully described.v
A represents the frame-work of the harvester that supports the carrier or elevator.
B is the board or apron that receives the grain from the carrier, which board or apron is securely attached to the beams or bars 0,01' to some other suitable partof the frame-work of the harvester.
The bars or beams C are securely attached to the frame A.
The board or apron B is set at a proper inclination to allow..the grain to slide down it freely.
D is a frame or rack, which is pivoted to and between the outer ends of the bars or beams O.
E and F are bars or shafts, the ends of which are pivoted to the upper and lower parts respectively of y the frame or rack D.
To the bars E and F, respectively, are attached the sets of teeth or fingers G and H, which rest upon the cross-bars I and J, attached to the vertical bars of the rack K, between which said vertical bars vthe said teeth or fingerspass.
The rack I J K is attached to the bars or beams C,
vbetween the pivoted frame D and the board or apron B, in such a position as to confine the grain suieiently to form a bundle as it passes -down the said 'board or apron B.
The rack or fi'ame D and its attachments E G and F vH are heldin the position shown in fig. 1 by the spring L, or equivalent weight, connected with the said frame or rack D.
1n using the machine, the parts being in the position shown in fig. 1, the grain, as it is delivered from the carrier, passes down the board or apron B, and is received upon and supported by the lower set of teeth or fingers H, which are supported by the cross-bar J of the .rack K, upon which they rest. When a sufcieut amount of the grain has been received to forni a gavel, the upper end of the pivoted rack D is drawn inward by means of a rope, M, or lever, connected with the said rack, bringing the upper set of teeth or fingers G forward to receive the grain, an Vrawing the lower set of teeth or fingers ontw; heneath the gavel, allowing the said gar. *e drop. When the gavel has been dropped the frame or rack D is released, and is brought back to its former position by the spring er weight connected with it, allowing the grain collected upon the upper teeth or fingers to drop upon the lower set of teeth or fingers, to be dropped thence when another' gavel is completed.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pivoted frame or rack D, pivoted bars or shaft E F, teeth or fingers G H, rack K with its cross-bars I J, and board or apron B, with each other, and wit-h the frame-work of a harvester, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
N.- s. KETCHUM.
