COMBINED GAGE, RULE, AND SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1911.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Serial No. 629,756.
To all whomfit may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MAUPIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockport, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Gages, Rules, and Squares, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to combined gage, rule and square and has for its object to provide a tool which can be used either as a gage, rule or square, and one which is especially adapted to be used by carpenters or architects.
Another object of my invention is to provide novel means for clamping the rule in the gage head, so that it can be readily adjusted.
Another object of my invention is to provide the blade with a novel adjustably mounted gage point which can be readily and easily adjusted.
A further object of my invention is to provide a tool of this character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency, durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claim and shoiwn in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan View; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring more particularly to the drawings l indicates a triangular shaped head block which is preferably made of wood, but any suitable material may be used. The head block l is provided with a vertically disposed threaded stem 2 which is adapted to be disposed in a longitudinal slot 3 formed in the rule t and a thumb nut 5 is threaded upon its upper endand adapted to be screwed down to hold the rule 4 in an adjusted position, said rule 4 forming the blade of the'square. A gage point 6 is threaded in the blade near one end thereof and a slot 7 formed in the blade adjacent the point 6 adapted to receive a pencil or other marking instrument.
Slidably mounted on one end of the blade is a T-shaped gage point block 8, adapted to slide upon the guide members 9 which are secured to the blade by the screws 10, said block carrying a gage point 11 adapted to be disposed in the slot 12. The block 8 is held in any adjusted position by means of the set screw 13. This block 8 is to be used when a liner adjustment than that obtained by the point 6 is required.
From the foregoing description itwill be readily seen that I have provided a tool that can be used to obtain different angles, and one which is so constructed that the blade can be readily detached and used as a rule when desired.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel -features or departing from the scope thereof.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed is:
The combination of a triangular head block, a vertically disposed threaded stem secured in said block, a blade having a longitudinal slot formed therein adapted to receive said stem, a thumb nut threaded upon the upper end of said stem to hold the blade in an adjustable position, a gage point threaded in said blade near one end thereof, said blade having a slot formed therein at the end thereof adjacent the gage point, guide members secured to said blade and disposed upon each side of the slot, a T- shaped gage point block Slidably mounted on said guide members, a gage point carried by said block and disposed in said slot and a set screw carried by said block for holding the same in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD MAUPIN.
Witnesses A. I-I. VoLKrNsUN, J. E. WINDLE.
