TROWEL.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Serial No. 595 489.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Trronrns N. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trowels; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in trowels, and has for an object the arrangement of a trowel constructed with a removable handle and means for firmly clamping the handle to the blade.
Another object of the invention is the ar rangement in a trowel, of a bead or securing strip rigidly connected with the blade of the trowel and designed to be engaged by a reciprocating clamping member connected with the handle, Said clamping member being designed to be operated by a suitably arranged eccentric lever, the whole arrangement being such that the eccentric lever may be moved for loosening the handle and permitting an adjustment thereof along the blade, or an entire removal, Without the use of tools or the unfastening of any securing means.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a trowel embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective sectional view through the blade of the trowel shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view on line AA of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the eccentric lever.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the blade of a trowel, and 2 the handle. The blade 1 has rigidly secured thereto a bar or bead 3 over which the substantially U-shaped end 4: of the eccentric lever 5 fits. Lever 5 is provided with a bifurcated portion 6 having an enlarged eccentric end 7 in which is formed an aperture 8 which is designed to accommodate a pin 9 which is also passed through an eye 10 of bolt 11. The bifurcated portion 6 and eye 10 are fitted in enlargement 12 of handle 2. Enlargement 12 has also provided a socket 13 which accommodates a cone-shaped member or nut 14 which is provided with a threaded aperture 15 into which bolt 11 is secured. Cone 141 is also provided with a groove or opening 16 for accommodating head 3.
in constructing the eccentric enlargement 7 and the opening 8 the same are preferably arranged so that the opening 8 is caused to be thrown off center when portion 4 is c011- tacting with bead 3. This will lock the bolt 11 in an el vated position for clamping the cone, enlargement 12, and bead 3 together. Whenever it is desired to adjust handle 2 the U-shaped portion 4 is raised, and consequently bolt 11 and cone 14 are loosened. A longitudinal movement of the handle 2 is then permitted, or if desired an entire removal. After the handle has been moved to the desired position the U-shaped portion 1- of lever 5 is forced down until the same engages bead 3. This will automatically lock the handle in place so that the trowel is in condition for use. In the construction of the adjustable handle, as set forth, it will be noticed that no sharp edges are offered which are liable to bruise or injure the operator, and nothing is provided for causing the lodgment of plaster or other things for preventing a' proper operation of the handle. The arrangement of the cone 14 and bolt 11 is such that the cone may be turned on its bolt when the cone is not in engagement with the bolt, so that a proper adjustment will be made for any wear or spring that may take place during the life of the trowel.
What I claim is:
1. Atrowel comprising a blade having a longitudinally extending dovetailed rib, a cone having a dovetailed slot proportioned for sliding movement upon the rib, a handle member having a conical socket, in its underside proportioned to receive the conical member, an eccentric pivoted upon the handle member and connecting means between the eccentric and the cone for exerting stress upon the cone to lock it in engagement with the rib and the socket.
2. In a trowel, a blade provided with a longitudinally extending dovetailed rib, a cone provided with a dovetailed groove proportioned for sliding movement upon the rib, a handle member having a socket proportioned to receive the cone and to bear upon the blade, an eccentric member pivoted to the handle member, and an eye-bolt carried by the eccentric having screw threaded engagement With the cone.
3. In a trowel, a blade provided With a longitudinally extending dovetailed rib, a cone having a dovetailed groove proportioned for slidable movement upon the rib, a
handle having a conical socketproportioned to receive the cone and to bear upon the blade, an eccentric pivoted upon the handle, an eye-bolt carried by the eccentric and hav- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ing adjustable connection With the cone, and a lever carried by the eccentric and provided with a recess to embrace the rib.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
