THOMAS W. RIDPATH, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MERRY-GO-ROUND.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Application filed December 13, 1910. Serial No. 597,159.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, THOMAS WV. RIDPATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merry-Go- Itounds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in 1nerry-go-rounds, and consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
in order that the invention may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing in which:
1 designates a central supporting post, resting upon a pair of cross sills 2, to which it is firmly secured by a plurality of braces 3.
4E designates a pair of horizontal cross arms rotatably mounted upon an axle 5, projecting upward from the central top portion of post 1. Each arm 4 is provided at its outer end with a pair of hangers 6, carrying a platform 7 at their lower ends, said plat form being firmly secured to the hanger by a plurality of braces 8, and acting as a support for a passenger preparatory to occupying or leaving the adjacent seat. Each pair of hangers 6, is provided a suitable distance above the platform, with a seat 9.
10 designates a crank-shaft journaled in each pair of braces 8, and provided with pedals 11.
12 designates a sprocket-wheel fixed to one end of each crank-shaft 10, and connected to a sprocket-wheel 13, through the intermediacy of an endless sprocket-chain 1 1. Each sprocket-wheel 13 is fixed to a horizontal shaft 14*, journaled in brackets 15, depending from the adjacent arm 1.
16 designates a large vertically arranged wheel fixed to each shaft 14 and arranged to traverse a grooved annular horizontal track 17 of large diameter, supported by a plurality of braces 18, projecting from the central post 1. heels 16 carry the weight of arms 4: and parts carried thereby.
19 designates a plurality of safety-rollers equal in number to wheels 16, and engaging the under side of track 17 to prevent wheels 16 from leaving said track. Rollers 19 are carried at the lower ends of arms 20, depending from the adjacent brackets 15.
In practice the cross arms 4t and all the parts connected thereto are rotated by passengers occupying seats 9, and driving shafts 10 through the intermediacy of the pedals 11, the power thus exerted being transmitted to wheels 16, through the intermediacy of shafts 14F, sprocket-wheels 13, sprocket-chain 14-, and sprocket-wheels 12.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that I. have produced a merry-goround which is comparatively simple in construction and well adapted for the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: v
A merry-go-round, consisting of a central supporting post, an axle at the upper end of said post, horizontal arms mounted upon said axle, hangers depending from said arms, seats carried by said hangers, driveshafts adjacent said seats, sprocket gearing actuated by said drive-shafts, shafts actuated by said sprocket gearing, large vertically-arranged wheels mounted upon the last-mentioned shafts, and carrying the weight of the horizontal arms and parts carried thereby, and a horizontal annular track of large diameter traversed by said wheels, said track surrounding the central supporting post, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS w. RIDPATH. Vitnesses F. G. FIsoHER, E.C. LILLIAN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
