COMBINED SHEET-METAL OYSTER DISPLAY AND ICING CASE AND CAN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES S'roLLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Sheet-Metal Oyster Display and Icing Cases and Cans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to sheet metal oyster display and icing cases and cans.

The object of my invention is to provide a combined sheet metal oyster display and icing case and can for use in keeping, displaying and dispensing oysters or other articles, which will be of a simple, strong, eflicient, durable and thoroughly sanitary construction, which will effectually protect the oysters from contamination by air, dust or dirt, which will keep the oysters without undue expenditure for or melting of the ice, which will enable the oysters to be attractively displayed to view without uncovering or exposing same to dirt, dust, air or other contamination, in which the oyster container may be readily removed from the display or icing case and replaced therein without difficulty, from which the oysters may be conveniently dipped or dispensed without exposure, and which will also on able allparts of the case and oyster container to be readily and thoroughly cleansed.

My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result as herein shown and described and more particularly specified in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet metal oyster display and icing case and container embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central, vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detail partial elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section on line 55 of Fig. 4: and Fig. 6 is a detail bottom plan view of the hinged glass or display cover.

In the drawing, 1 represents the case, the same being of a double walled or double shell construction, and comprising an outer shell or body 2, the same being preferably of cylindrical form, and havingpreferably a folded or lock side seam 3 and being made preferably of tin plate.

galvanized sheet steel and having preferably a lock side seam 5. The inner shell 1 of the double body is provided with a series of longitudinal corrugations 6 extending from the lower end to a smooth annular mouth portion 7 at the upper end, which is furnished with an external roll 8 embracing a stiffening wire 9. The upper end of the outer or tin plate shell 2 abuts against this external roll 8 which thus serves as a lock or shoulder to rigidly brace'the two shells together at their upper ends. The inner or galvanized sheet steel shell 4 is provided near its upper end with a tapering flange or shoulder or offset 10 to afford an insulating space 11 between the two shells, which is filled with heat insulating material 12, such, for example, as sheet or powdered cork, asbestos, sawdust or other porous fabric or material.

The outer bottom 13 of the case is preferably of tin plate and secured to the outer body or shell 2 by an external double or other folded seam 14;. The inner bottom 15 of the case is preferably of galvanized sheet steel and is soldered or otherwise secured to the lower end of the inner shell 4 of the body. This inner bottom is preferably furnished with a series of annular corrugations 16 and interposed between it and the outer bottom 18 is a disk of insulating material 17. Insulating space is provided between the inner bottom 15 and the outer bottom 13, preferably by an extension rim 18 of the inner bottom 15 which projects downward to the outer bottom 13.

The oyster can or container 19 is preferably of enameled or porcelain lined sheet steel, and its body 20 is preferably furnished with a folded side seam 21 and its bottom 22 is secured to the lower end of the body by an external double or other folded seam 23. The enameled or porcelain lined sheet metal oyster container 19 is preferably of substantially cylindrical form, and it is provided at its upper end with an externally curved or rolled rim24 to give it a smooth mouth and to cause it to properly cooperate with the combined cover 25 of the case body and oyster can or container 19, and to cause the cover to effect a tight and secure closure.

The combined icing case and oyster can cover 25 consists of an annular dome shaped head, the central portion of which is raised above the outer or rim portion thereof, the

upper end of the oyster can or container 19 projecting preferably a half inch or such matter above theupper end of the double bodied icing case 1. The annular cover is removably secured to and tightly clamped uponthe body of the case 1 and can 19 by means of cam acting spring wire hooks or levers 26 connected to the outer shell 2 of the body by straps 27 and the hooks or cam shoulders 28 of which snap or lock over the rim 29 of the annular cover 25. The annular cover 25 has an outer rim or seat portion 29, provided with a depending flange 30 which engages the external annular roll 8 of the inner body 4 of the case to thus form a substantially tight closure of the icing case. The annular cover 25 is also provided, immediately surrounding the central opening 31, with an inner annular closure seat or rim 32, provided with a depending annular'flange 33 which fits inside the upper or month end of the oyster can or container 19,'the substantially horizontal closure seat 32 fitting snugly against the external rolled rim 24 of the oyster can or container 19, so as to effect a tight closure therewith. Surrounding the inner closure seat 32, the an- V nular cover 25 is also provided with a depending flange or wall 34 to afford a depressed seat for the hinged glass or displaycover 35 which closes the central opening in the annular cover 25. The hinged glass or display cover 35 is preferably circular in form and of plate glass and provided with a nickel plated metal rim or band 36 having a separate piece lower flange member 37 to engage the lower face of the glass and an internal rolled rim 38 which engages the upper face of the plate glass and locks the same securely and tightly within this surrounding metal rim. The two parts 36, 37 of the metal rim or band surrounding the glass cover 35 are removably secured to- 45. gether by interengaging tongues and slots 36 and 37 a to enable the broken glass to be readily removed and replaced. The annular flange member 37 has a flat rim 37 to engage the annular cover 25, the rim being provided with a marginal roll 37. The metal rim of the glass display cover is hingedto the annular cover 25 by means of a pair of hingedstraps 39, 40, the former secured by screws or rivets to the annular top 25, and the other brazed or otherwise secured to the metal rim 36 of the glass cover 35. To securely attach the hinged strap or plate 40 to the surrounding metal rim of the glass cover, it-is preferably provided with a supplemental segmental socket 43 which embraces the internally rolled rim 33 of the metal band 36 of the glass cover 35. The hinged strap 39 which is secured to the annular top 25 is provided with an inclined rest 44 for the hinged glass display cover to support the same in its open posit-ion,this

inclined rest being preferably formed integral with the hinged strap 39 by bending the same upward and downward into an angle or inverted V shape, the extremities of the rest member being secured to the hinged strap 39 by screws 45.

As the annular cover 25 which performs the double function of closing both the icing case 1 and the oyster container 19 has an inner depending flange 33 which fits snugly within the upper or month end of the oyster container 19, the annular cover also serves the further function of locking, holding and centering the oyster can or container rigidly and firmly in position within the icing case 1 when the annular cover 25 is clamped in posit-ion on the case 1 and container 19.

To enable the removable oyster container '19 to be conveniently taken out of the case 1 and replaced when desired, the removable annular cover 25 being first unclamped and taken OK, I secure a central ice shield 46, preferably of cylindrical form, and preferably made of perforated galvanized sheet metal, to the inner bottom 15 of the case 1, this being preferably done by providing the lower end of the ice shield with an annular flange 47, and soldering or otherwise securin g the same to said inner bottom. This perforated sheet metal ice shield is preferably of cylindrical form, and provided at its upper end with an externally folded or rolled rim 48 to give it a smooth edge. The perforated cylindrical ice shield 46 keeps the ice, filling the annular chamber 52, from 1 coming in direct contact with the oyster container 19. The ice shield should but very slightly exceed in diameter the oyster container 19, so that the ice shield will serve to approximately center the oyster container in 105 the case and in position for causing its upper rolled rim 24 to properly register with the inner annular closure seat 32 of the annular cover 25.

As in my invention, the annular cover is 11 dome shaped or raised at the center, and the oyster container projects at its upper end above the upper end of the icing case, there is no possibility for water from the icing case to-overflow or leak into the oyster con- 115 tainer. The metal rim or band 36 37 which surrounds the hinged glass or display cover is provided at its front portion with a finger lip 49 for convenience in opening and closing the glasscover.

The double body of the case 1 is provided with a drain faucet 50 having a plug or valve 51 for opening and closing the same. The outer shell 2 of the case body is provided with handles 53, preferably flat ones, 125 and preferably secured to the body by the same straps 27 which are employed to secure the hinged clamps or locking levers 26 by which the annular cover 25 is clamped firmly in place so as to tightly and properly 133 close, by means of its outer annular closure seat 29 and its inner annular closure seat- 32, the outer case 1 and the oyster container 19 by one and the same clamping operation, of

the hinged clamps or levers 39, 40.

A combined sheet metal icing and dis play case and can, com-prising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure roll, an inner container having at its upper end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case, and an inner flange fitting Within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, clamps cooperating With said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and an ice shield secured to the bottom of said icing case and surrounding said container, substantially as specified.

A combined sheet metal icing and dis play case and can, comprising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an inner container having at its upper end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll. of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case and an inner flange fitting Within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said con tainer, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, clamps cooperating With said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, substantially as specified.

4. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can, comprising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an inner container having at its end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case and an inner flange fitting Within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, said glass display cover having a metal rim surrounding the same and said annular cover having a depressed seat surrounding the metal rim of said glass cover, substantially as specified.

5. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can, comprising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an inner container having at its end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case and an inner flange fitting Within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, clamps cooperating With said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, said glass display cover having a metal rim surrounding the same and said annular cover having a depressed seat surrounding the metal rim of said glass cover, said hinged glass cover having a hinged strap provided With an inclined. rest for holding said hinged cover in its opening position, substantially as specified.

6. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can, comprising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an inner container having at its upper end a closure seatroll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case, and an inner flange fitting within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, and clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, said clamps being hinged to the outer case and having cam acting shoulders engaging the rim of said annular cover, substantially as specified.

A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can, comprising in combination a double walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an inner container having at its upper end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flange surrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case, and an inner flange fitting within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, and clamps cooperating with said annular coverto cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and v the inner container, the inner shell of said outer case being provided with upright longitudinally extending corrugations, substantially as specified.

8. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can, comprising in combination a double walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat roll, an

inner container having at its upper end a closure seat roll above the closure seat roll of said outer case, an annular cover having an outer depending flangesurrounding and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said outer case, and an inner flange fitting within and peripherally engaging the closure roll of said container, said inner closure seat being raised above said outer closure seat of the cover, and clamps cooperatlng wlth said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously'close both the outer case and the inner container, and heat insulating material between the inner and outer shells of said outer case, substantially as specified.

9. A combinedsheet metal icing and display case and can comprisingin combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat, an inner container having, at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and interwedging with the closure seats of said outer case and inner container, and clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, substantially as specified.

10. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can comprising in combination a double walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat, an inner container having at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and interwedging with the closure seats of said outer case and inner container, and clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, substantially as specified.

11. A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can comprising in combination a double walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat, an inner container having at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and interwedging with the closure seats of said outer case and inner container, and clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, said glass display cover having a two part metal rim surrounding the same, substantially as specified.

A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can comprising in combination a double walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat, an inner container having at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and interwedgin with the closure seats of said outer case an inner container, clamps cooperating with said annular cover to cause the same when supplemented by a upper end an annular closure seat an inner container having at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and intervvedging With the closure seats of said outer case and inner container, clamps cooperating With said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, and an ice shield secured to the bottom of said case and surrounding said inner container to center the same With said annular cover, sub stantially as specified.

A combined sheet metal icing and display case and can comprising in combination a double Walled icing case having at its upper end an annular closure seat, an inner container having at its upper end an annular closure seat and an annular cover having inner and outer annular flanges peripherally engaging and interwedging with the closure seats of said outer case and inner container, clamps cooperating With said annular cover to cause the same When supplemented by a cover for the central opening supported thereon to simultaneously close both the outer case and the inner container, a hinged glass display cover closing the central opening in said annular cover, said glass display cover having a two-part metal rim surrounding the same, the parts of said rim being removably secured together to facilitate replacement of a broken glass, and an ice shield secured to the bottom of said case and surrounding said inner container to center the same with said annular cover, substantially as specified.
