DEVICE FOR HANDLING sEALING rArEn.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nt d Aug. 15, 1911.
Application filed June 1, 1910. Serial No. 564,506.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREN WILLIAM AN- DERSON, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania,
have invented a new and usefulImprovement in Devices for Handling Sealing-Fa per; and I do hereby declare the following and exact description thereof. 7
My invention relates to devices for handling sealing paper, and has special reference to the handling of paper strips for use in the sealing of packages. I
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and eflicient device for handling sealing paper, in which gummed strips of paper used in be; carried thereby, canxbe withdrawn therefrom, and can be moistened and cut in-the length desired, so as to be'applied by hand to the package desired to be sealed.
- My invent on consists, generally stated, in
the novel arrangement, combination and construction of cifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled inthe art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved device for handling sealing paper, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying draw-' ing, in which- Figure '1 is a side elevation of my improv d device for handling sealing paper. Fig. i2 is a top "plan view of the'same. Fig. 3 is, a longitudinal central section of the sam Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing.
As illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents thebody or box member, preferably formed of glass, and provided with the base or bot tom- 2, which has the paper receptacle portion 3 at thevrear end thereof and the extension portion .4 at the front end of the 'same and extending forwardly from said reglass fits over the receptacle portion 3, and is provided with a curved front portion 6 thereon for fitting against a like curved portion 2' onsaid portion 3. This cover 5 is held in place on the receptacle portion 30f the member 1b means of a downwardly .e
tending flange at the rear ,end of the sa e the rear end of said porti n,
the sealing of packages can parts, as hereinafter more spe-c preferably formed of and by downwardly'extending lugs 8 on each side of the front portion 6 on said cover fitting within seats 8 in the extension 4 on said member.
Within the extension 4 is the well 9, in which is located a roller 10, preferably formed of glass, and positioned therein through the shaft portions -11 on its ends fitting within bearings 12 sides-of said extension. This roller 10 is rovided with shouldered portions 10 on its ends for bearing against the sides of the 'well'9 to reduce the frictionbetween such parts and keep the roll from binding on "such sides.
Connected to the curved front portion ,6
on the cover 5 by means of a bolt 13 is the cutting bar 14:, which extends across said portion, and is provided with the knife por- -;tions-15 on each side of the same.
The upper face 4 of the extension 4 is fo'rmed'by re-j cessed portions on the inner faces of the inclined downwardly from the box member 1- and thus provides for an inclined paper bearing portion 16, which is adapted to form with the lower edge 6 of the curved portion 6 I on the cover 5 an opening 18 between the same for the withdrawal of the paper, lower edge is provided with a strip of felt, as at 19, to cause tension to the paper in its withdrawal and enable pressure to be put 'as hereinafter described, and such" upon such paper in its contacting with the wet roller 10, as hereinafter described. The upper end of the inclined bearing portion 16 terminates in a fiat portion 20, which 'con-' nects with a curved portion 21 at the front end of the box member 1 and such portion 21 connects with the straight or flat portion 2 of the bottom 2 of said member.
The box member 1 and extension 4 are caved out at the bottomof the same, as at 22, in order to lighten the device andto provide a siphonic'reservoir 23 for the water for the well 9, which is supplied thereto through said well, and such caved portion is closed-by a plate 24 fitting in 'a recess 25 in the bottom 2, which is preferably formed of glass, and secured inplace in said recess by cementing the same or in any other suitable manner.
In the use of my improved device for' handling sealing paper, thepaper is in the form 0f a strip" a, which is gummed on one side as at a and wound up into a roll b, which is placed in" the box member 1 and by the hand and drawn through said open rests'upon the straight or flat portion 2f of the bottom 2 of said member. After the roll 6 is thus in'place within the box member 1 and the outer endv of the paper strip a has been drawn out over the bearing portion 16' on the extension 4:, the cover 5 1s placed 1n position over said member, which will allow such strip end to be'positioned 1n the opening 18 between said bearing portion and the front end on the curved portion 6 on sald cover. In the withdrawing of the paper strip a from the roll I), the end of the same vextending out 'of the opening 18 1s grasped ing from said roll and along the curved portion 21, flat portion 20 and over the roller 10. This operation will act to moisten the gummed side a of such strip a by such side contacting with said roller and such roller being revolved thereby within the water 0 placed within the well 9 in the extension 4. When a sufiicient length. of the paper strip a has thus been-drawn from the roll band moistened by the roller 10, the operator throws such strip over one of the knlfe edges 15 on thecutting bar 14 carried by the cover 5, which will act to sever or out such strip at the end of the moistened portion thereon, and thus leave the severed moistened portion of the desired length in the hand of the operator for being pasted on the package while in a dampened state,
while such dry .end of the strip a leading from the roll b will drop down so as to pro: trude from the opening 18 and will then be ready for another operation of withdrawing,
moistening and severing another portion of I the same.
In the withdrawing of the paper strip a from the roll I), the curved portion 21 in the box member 1 will act to form a bearing surface for such roll in revolving and thereby aid the felt strip 19 in producing a presby dotted lines in'Fig. 3, while the reservoir 23 and plate 24 can bedispensed with if desired, and it will be evident that such cover and the other parts of'the device can bev formed of materials other than glass.
It will be evident that one or more rolls of paper can be placed within the box member and of different widths for being withdrawn therefrom, and in the case of three or more such rolls being used, two or more cutting bars can be placed on the device to sever the paper strips, while ordinarypaper strips can be used in form of rolls- Without being gummed and in place of'water, mucilage or to the paper.
it is moistened other adhesive material placed in the-well and reservoir for being applied by the roller 0 Various other modifications and changes in thedesign and construction of my improved device for handling sealing paper may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or sacrificing any of the claims.
It will thus be seenthat my improved device for handling sealing paper will enable the gummed paper strip to be easily and quickly withdrawn, moistened and severed for instant application in sealing a package, and will permit the use of paper strips-in sealing up some class of packages where string and cord are generally used, which will thereby save the time and eliminate the inconvenience in tying .up such packages, whileat the same time the package is sealed against tampering with the same, and provides for a positive wrapping of the same. The device can also be used in handling stickers, labels, etc., and advertising matter, and if desired suit-able advertisements or. other reading matter can be placed upon the strips before being rolled up in the rolls, or after it leaves such rolls. I
What'I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 1. A device for handling sealing paper strips, consisting of a box or receptacle for a roll of strips, a rollenmountedin front of said receptacle for engaging with the strip as it is withdrawn from the roll in said receptacle to moisten the same for sealing, and a stationary cutter bar mounted on the front of said receptacle having the cuttingedge turned toward the rear of said receptacle for severing said strip after it is moistened and withdrawn from said receptacle by the throwing of said strip over the same.
