LOUIE A. SHERMAN AND I-IARRY E. SHERMAN, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SHOT-SPREADER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LOUIE A. SHERMAN and HARRY E. SHERMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot-Spreaders; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art same, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to shot Spreaders for shot gun shells, and has for its object to provide a device of that type which may be loaded in a shell with the shot and will, when the shell is discharged, distribute the shot evenly through an enlarged pattern. In accomplishing this object, We have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein t Figure I is a longitudinal section of a shot gun shell equipped with a shot spreader constructed according to our invention. Fig. II is a cross section of same on the line IIII, Fig. I. Fig. III is a detail perspective of the spreader. Fig. IV is a plan view of aspreader blank.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a shot gun shell of ordinary stamped out and scored at a single oper-' ation and that it may, by a succeeding operation, be shaped as illustrated in Fig. III,
so that the entire device may be cheaply When loading a shell, the powder charge Specification of Letters Patent.

' and wads are inserted in the usual way and a spreader placed on the powder wads with the neck down and the V-shaped tapering body portions diverging toward the sides of the shell, and usually contacting therewith at the upper corners of the tapered portions. lVhen shot is poured into the shell it surrounds the spreader and fills the space between the V-shaped portions at the center of the shell.
When a shell containing a spreader of this kind is discharged, the shot is evenly scattered over a wide pattern.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A shot spreader formed from a single piece of material consisting of a connecting neck and outwardly diverging end portions at opposite ends of said neck.
2. A shot spreader formed from a single piece of material having laterally opening slots forming a central neck and having outwardly diverging end portions at opposite sides of said neck.
3. A shot spreader formed from a single piece of material having outwardly divergbers, and having a longitudinal scoring whereby the body membersmay be folded,
substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a shell, of a shot spreader comprising troughed body menubers having-forwardly diverging body portions.
5. The combination with a shell, of a shot spreader comprising troughed body 1nembers having forwardly diverging body portions, and having their outer corners in contact with the inner surface of the shell.
6. The combination with a shell having a shot chamber, of ashot'spreader seated on the base of the shot chamber and consisting of outwardly diverging body members, comprising tapered wings that diverge from each other and form relative spread wings on the opposite body members.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
