THOMAS P. PICK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BEER-STEIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1911.
Patented Apr. 28, 1914.
Serial No. 668,375.
To all evil 0m. it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS P. P1011, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Steins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in beer steins and the like and has for its ob ject to provide a device of this character with a hinged cover which may be detached therefrom at will.
Beer steins having hinged covers are in very common use at the present time but they are so constructed that the covers are not separable from the stein, therefore when the stein is broken the cover is of no further use or when the cover is broken another cover cannot be attached thereto, but my intention is to overcome these difficulties and so construct the stein that either the stein itself may be used with another cover or the cover may be detached from any stein and attached to another one.
Vith the above explained objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of my improved stein, Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line AA of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line B-B of Fig. 2, the hinged member being removed, Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a. hinge member, and Fig. 5 is top plan view of Fig.3.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the specification and in the several views of the drawings in which 1 indicates a stein provided with a handle 2 upon which is removably secured the expansible collar 3, which embraces said handle 2. This collar has its ends 4 and 5 turned at right angles to form a casing for a connecting block which is loosely held between the said ends 4!. and 5 by means of a screw 7. Seated over the ends 4: and 5 of the collar 3 and secured to the block 6 by means of a screw 8 is a socket member 9 which is provided with a socket 10. The member 9 is provided with a pair of jaws 11 and 12, which form the socket 10, and a pair of projecting lugs 13 and 1 1 which are connected by a screw 15, whereby said jaws may be drawn together to fixedly hold the depending lug 16 of the hinge member 17. The member 9 is provided with a bearing portion 18 which seats on the handle 2.
The lever 19 is provided with depending hinge members 20 which engage the hinge member 17 and are held thereto by the rivet 21. The lever member 20 is secured to the cap or cover 22, which is adapted to close the stein and be held normally closed over said stein by means of its weight. To remove the cap from the stein it is only necessary to unscrew the screw 15 thereby loosening the aws 11 and 12 and the lug 16 can be removed from the socket 10, after which a screw driver can be inserted. in said socket and the screw 8 removed whereby the member 9 can be separated from the member 3, then by withdrawing the screw 7, the memher 3 may be separated from the handle 2.
The block 6 may be sufficiently narrow so that the member 3 may be sufliciently tightened to trictionally engage handles of varying sizes.
Having now fully described my invention, that which I claim to be newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A stein comprising a receptacle having a handle, a split collar embracing said handle, a block between the ends of said collar, a socket member secured to said block, a hinged lug seated in said socket member, and means upon said socket member detachably engageable with said lug.
2. A beer stein comprising a receptacle having a cover and a handle, a collar embracing said handle, a block between the ends of said collar, a socket member secured to said block, a lever upon said cover, a lug seated in said socket member and hingedly connected to said lever, and turn-screw means carried by said socket member adapt ed for drawing the sides of said member together engaging said lug.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS P. PICK.
