RAILWAY-TIE AND FASTENING.
Specification. of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, REINHOLT SCHRAMM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkton, in the county of Brookings, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties and Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway ties and more especially to metallic railway ties and fastening means for the rails.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a metallic tie of hollow form and substantially rectangular in cross section and more especially, to provide simple and improved fastening means for securing the rails to the ties against longitudinal shifting or movement and also for raising the rails when the tie becomes settled in the ground surface.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie and rail fastening embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of a portion of a rail recessed for coaction with my improved fastening means. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line et4 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated, the tie comprises a hollow metallic shell or casing 10, the same being substantially of rectangular cross section but provided with relatively rounded corners 11 and also provided through its upper wall and adjacent each end thereof with a pair of spaced threaded apertures 12 for coaction with the rail fastening means .to be hereinafter more fully described.
The fastening means referred to are mounted in a similar relation as the apertures 12 are disposed relative to each other and each fastening comprises a rectangular plate or block 13 of metal provided with a central threaded aperture 14 for receiving fastening screws 15 therethrough, said screws also engaging the apertures in the top wall of the tie so as to tightly clamp the plate thereon. The inner edges of the plates or blocks 13 are formed with overhanging flanges 16 produced by undercutting the plates as shown at 17 to produce in clined walls having vertical end shoulders 18 whereby the said plates will properly 00- act with the base flanges 19 of the rail sections 20 for securing the latter to the ties and against longitudinal shifting. In order that the plate will properly conform to the shape of the rails to prevent movement of the latter, the opposite side faces of the rails are formed with recesses 21 extending into the base flanges 19 and partly into the web portion 22 so as to conform to the flanged portions of the plates, whereby said latter portions will seat therein and the end shoulders 23 thereby provided will engage upon opposite sides of the fastening plates or blocks and thus retain the rails against movement. Should it be desired to elevate the rails or to raise the same by reason of sinking or settling of the ties, so as to produce proper elevational conformity between the rails and the track, I employ a metallic plate 24 which is disposed beneath the fastening plates or blocks and adjacent portion of the tie and also provided with a pair of apertures for receiving the fastening screws 15 therethrough, it being only necessary to withdraw the screws, remove the plates and raise the rail for making use of or placing such plates in position. Thus, it will be evident that the rails when thus secured will be restrained from movement or longitudinal shifting under the action of moving trains and the device being simple, may be readily secured in position or removed when desired.
