articles in more easily accessible arrange-v ment than is possible by the use of ordinary shelving; to provide an improved construction for the drawers of a cabinet of this kind and improved construction of the guides and guideways whereby the sliding action of the drawers is facilitated and improved; and to provide improved means for reinforcing the shelves which separate superimposed rows of drawers whereby the sagging of the shelves and the consequent jamming of the drawers are prevented.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the drawers in various positions. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation taken on the line AA of Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on the line BB of Fig. 4. Fig. i is a fragmentary sectional detail of the drawer showing the drawer in its fully open posi tion in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line DD of Fig. 4.
In general the construction illustrated comprises a cabinet subdivided by shelves and a series of drawers slidably mounted in the cabinet and arranged in rows or tiers, one above another. The drawers are adapted to be pulled outwardly at the front and are secured in place by fixed guides which slidably engage movable guideways, the guides and guideways being provided with stops to limit the outward movement of the drawers. The drawers also are hinged adj acent their inner ends to followers and may be swung to a position substantially at right angles to the line of their sliding movement, so that access may be readily had to the contents of their interiors, even when the draw ers are narrow compared with their depths. In the specific construction shown in the drawings the casing or rack 1 has a series of drawers 2 arranged in tiers or rows one above another and the drawers 2 are separately slidable forward and back, therows being separated by the supporting shelves 5. Each of the drawers 2 comprises a forward drawer section 6 and an L-shaped or box like follower 7, the two being connected to gether by upper and lower hinges 8. Lo ,cated on the shelves 5 above and below eacii of the drawers 2, and adjacent to one edge of each drawer are upper and lower guides 10 which have longitudinal tongues or shoulders 11 projecting inwardly along their entire length and fitting into the grooves in the upper and lower guideways 12 which extend along the top and bottom faces of each of the drawers adjacent to one side thereof. The hinges 8 have wings extending in both directions from the pivotal axis, the rearwardly extending wings being connected to the followers and the forwardly extending wings to the drawer sections, the hinges being located between the drawer sections and the followers. The guideways 12 are each divided so that one part is secured to the drawer section 6 and one part is secured to the follower, both parts being slidably mounted on the projecting shoulders 11 on both upper and lower surfaces. The hinge joint permits the drawer section to be readily swung to its transverse position when it has been pulled out to the limit of its movement. The shelves 5, in addition to the usual supporting construction, are further reinforced by a metallic strap or band 1a which extends along the front edge of the shelf being countersunk in the facing strip 15, and is secured in place by screws 16. A suitable handle 17 is mounted on the front of each of the drawers 2.
The operation of the device is as follows: The drawers are pulled outwardly until the stops prevent further movement when the hinges 8 permit it to be swung to the position shown in Fig. 1, in which position access to the interior of the drawer may be readily had. The drawers may be in turn subdivided by partitions to provide convenient compartments and when in open position the compartments are fully exposed to permit ready access to their contents. The fronts of the followers 7 serve as closures for the openings in the casing while the drawers are in their fully opened positions, and
serve to prevent other articles or objects from accidentally getting into the compartments. The followers 7 may serve also the purpose of ornamental screens for the purpose of concealing the objectionable openings. The guideways 12 are each provided with upper and lower stops 18 which abut respectively against fixed stops 19 on each of the upper and lower guides 10 to limit the forward sliding movement of the drawer,- and prevent its being accidentally pulled ontirely out of its compartment.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim 1. A cabinet comprising a frame, a drawer slidably mounted in said frame, said drawer comprising a drawer section and a follower, said drawer section being hinged to said follower on a vertical axis and adapted to be swung toward one side when said drawer is in open position, coacting guides and guide ways on said casing and drawer adpted to prevent lateral shifting of said drawer section when it is rearward of its said open position.
2. A cabinet comprising a casing, drawers slidably mounted in said casing, guides in said casing, said drawers comprising drawer sections and followers, guideways on both said drawer sections and said followers, said gnideways having sliding engagement with said guides, a hinge joint between said drawer sections and their followers, said hinge joint being adapted to permit said drawer section to be swung to one side when said drawer is in its open position.
Signed at La Crosse this 18th day of September 1912.
