  • This invention relates to window shutters, and the object thereof is to provide shutters of this class which may be used as ordinary shutters, or partly as shutters, and partly as window shades or awnings the lower portions of the shutters being hinged to the upper portions thereof, and being adapted to swing outwardly in planes at right angles to the window or the walls of the building in which the windows are placed; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in devices of the class specified and constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

To all whom 2'15 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LOOKHART, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Tarrytown, in the county of 'Westchester and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shutters, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window shutters, and the object thereof is to provide shutters of this class which may be used as ordinary shutters, or partly as shutters, and partly as window shades or awnings the lower portions of the shutters being hinged to the upper portions thereof, and being adapted to swing outwardly in planes at right angles to the window or the walls of the building in which the windows are placed; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in devices of the class specified and constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters, and in which Figure 1. an outside view of a window provided with shutters made according to my invention, and showing the shutters closed. Fig. 2. an inside view thereof. Fig. 8. a side view showing part of the window frame in section and the bottom part of a shutter swung outwardly on the hinges by which it is connected with the top part thereof. Fig. 4. a section on the line 14 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5. a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6. a section on the line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7. a section on the line 77 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 8. a section on the line 8-8 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part of this speci-' fication I have shown a window frame comprising, side portions a, a top portion a and a bottom portion a and in the practice of my invention I provide shutters comprising, top members Z2 and bottom members 6 and the top members I) of the shutters are hinged to the sides of the window frame as shown at 0, while the bottom members of the shutter are hinged to the top members as shown at 0 The lower end portions of the bottom members of the shutters are also Specification of Letters Patent.

hinged to the sides of the window frame as shown at cl, the hinges used for this purpose comprising parts d secured to the window frame, and parts (Z secured to the shutters, and the parts (Z which are secured to the window frame are provided, as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, with projecting spring jaw members (i which open outwardly, and the parts d which are secured to the shutters are provided with downwardly directed pintles (Z adapted to pass between said jaw' members and held therebetween by friction, and to rotate therein.
The tops of the bottom shutter members 5 are provided on their inner sides as shown in Fig. 7, with plate spring catches a which are secured thereto at 6 and which are curved inwardly and upwardly, and provided at their upper ends with backwardly directed hooks adapted to engage corresponding hook members e secured to the top shutter members I) as shown at e, and the bottom shutter members are provided above the point where the plate spring members e are secured thereto, with keepers f in which are mounted trippers f adapted to bear on the inner sides of the upper end portions of th spring catches e, and to force said spring catches out of engagement with the hook members (a and said trippers through keepers e secured to the lower portions of said lower shutter members I), and which are provided with rings 6 a pull on which will disengage the hook members 6 from the hook members 6 and allow the bottom shutter members Z2 to be swung outwardly as shown in Fig. 3, it being understood that the parts 6 and e aid in holding the shutter members 79 in a closed position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which operation is also aided by the hinge (Z.
In the position of the parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the shutters including both the top and bottom members thereof may be swung outwardly in the manner of ordinary shutters in which operation said shutters swing on the hinges c and (Z, but when it is desired so to do the bottom portion or members 6 of the shutters may be swung outwardly and away from the window frame as shown in Fig. 3, by simply pressshutters in a closed position said lock devices being shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and these lock devices consist of keepers g secured to the top a of the window frame, and other keepers g secured to the top members b of the shutters, and in which are mounted spring operated bolts 9 adapted to engage the keepers g in the usual manner, and provided with pins 9 which pass outwardly through slots 9 in the keepers g and with which are connected cords g which pass downwardly and inwardly through the top members 6' of the shutters as shown at 9 ,andwhich also extend downwardly and through keepers g on the inner bottom portions of said shutters and which are provided with rings 9 a pull on which will release the locks g, and allow the shutters to be opened on the hinges 0 and d, and these look devices will operate automatically to secure said shutters when they are swung into a closed position.
The top members 79 of the shutters are provided with transverse shutter slats z which are preferably stationary,- but the bottom portions of the shutters (Z are provided with transverse shutter slats j the upper edge portions of which are loosely connected with the side frames of said shutter members bymeans of staple shaped keepers j on which the slats j are freely movable, and loosely connected with the slats j centrally and vertically'thereof as shown in Fig. 1, and at 3' in Fig. 6, are rods with the upper ends of which are connected cords k which are passed inwardly through, the tops of the top shutter members I) as shown at la and downwardly and inwardly of said shutter and out through the bottom of the bottom shutter members 5 as shown at 70*, and connected with the lower ends of the rods 70 and by means of the cords 70 the slats j may be opened and closed as will be readily understood. 7
The outer edge portions of the shutter members 19 are also provided with wings m which are hinged thereto at m and said wings mare provided with supplemental wing members a hinged thereto at 019, and

in form, taken together, and adapted to be opened so as to close the side space between, the bottom shutter members 6 and the sides of the window frame, when said shutter members are swung outwardly on the hinges 0 as shown in Fig. 3', or said wing members may be folded inwardly when the bottom shutter members are' losedv as shown in Fig. 2. I also provide means for holding the bottom shutter members 6 in the position shown in Fig. 3, consisting of rods 0 loosely connected with said shutter members at 0 at one end, and the other ends of which are provided with hooks 0 adapted to engage keepers 0 secured to the window" sill or the bottom window frame member a and the rods 0 consist of separate parts 0 and 0". The parts 0 being provided with tubular socket members 0 adapted to receive the parts 0, and the parts 0 being provided with set screws 0 whereby the part 0 may be adjusted and secured therein as will bereadily understood. The connection of the rods 0 with the shutter members at 0 is a t permanent connection, but the other ends of said rods may be disengaged from the keepers o and may be connected with corre .sponding keepers 0 secured tothe bottom" I shutter members and on the inner side therein .as shown in Fig. 2, and this is the position that the rods 0 occupy when the shut- -ters are closed. The top shutter members are also provided with anti-sagging hook devices 79, which are secured thereto at 79 and as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. These hooks 'are adapted to engage plates p secured to the top a of the window frame when the shuttersare closed so as to aid the hinges 0 of the top shutter members in supporting the bottom shutter members when the shutters are closed, and the operation of the hooks p is automatic as will be readily understood.
With this construction it will be seen that the shutters may be opened and closedin the manner of ordinary shutters whenever desired, or the bottom members 6- thereof maybe swung outwardly away from the bottom portion of thewindow frame whenever desired, and the spaces between the bottom shutter members when thus. open may be closed by the side wing members mn and the shutter slats jmay be opened -or closed whenever it isv necessary or de-' sirable, and the shutters are thus made to operate in the manner of ordinary shutters or as awnings, and while I have shown and. described the preferred form of my improvement it will be apparent that changes in, and modifications of the construction described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention what o I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1 1. The combination with a window frame, of a window shutter and awning comprising a pair of top sections each hinged attwo points along their outer edges to the casing,
and a pair of bottom members of the same Y width as said top members, and each hinged to the lower edge of one of said top members, each of said lower members being provided adjacent to its lower end with a hinge member and the window casing being provided with hinge members to detachably engage the hinge members of said lower sections, the pivotal axis of each of said detachable hinges being in alinement with those of the two hinges of the adjacent upper section.
2. The combination with a window frame, of a window shutter and awning comprising a pair of top sections each hinged at two points along their outeredges to the casing, and a pair of bottom members of the same width as said top members, and each hinged to the lower edge of one of said top members, each of said lower members being provided adjacent to its lower end with a hinge member and the window casing being provided with hinge members to detachably engage the hinge members of said lower sections, the pivotal axis of each of said detachable hinges being in alinement with those of the two hinges of the adjacent upper section, and locking means on each shutter located adjacent to the hinge connection between the top and bottom sections thereof for securing the top and bottom sections in the same plane, and preventing the outward swinging of the bottom section.

The combination with a window frame, of a window shutter and awning comprising a pair of top sections each hinged at two points along their outer edges to the casing, and a pair of bottom members of the same width as said top members, and each hinged to the lower edge of one of said top members, each of said lower members being provided adjacent to its lower end with a hinge member and the window casing being provided with hinge members to detachably engage the hinge members of said lower sections, the pivotal axis of each of said detachable hinges being in alinement with those of the two hinges of the adjacent upper section, spring locking devices for each shutter located adjacent to the hinge connection between the top and bottom sections thereof for securing the top and bottom sections in the same plane, movable releasing devices for said locking devices and operative connections therefrom extending to points near the bottom of the shutter.

The combination with a window frame, of a window shutter and awning comprising a pair of top sections each hinged at two points along their outer edges to the casing, and a pair of bottom members of the same width as said top members, and each hinged to the lower edge of one of said top members, each of said lower members being provided adjacent to its lower end with a hinge member and the window casing being provided with hinge members to detachably engage the hinge members of said lower sections, the pivotal axis of each of said detachable hinges being in alinement with those of the two hinges of the adjacent upper section, each of said shutters being provided adjacent to the hinge connections between the sections thereof, with a spring hook secured to one section and adapted to engage a fixed part on the other section, a pivoted releasing device for each of said shutters having a part beneath the spring hook for disengaging it from its stationary coacting part, and a connection from said releasing device depending therefrom to a point near the bottom of the shutter.
