Description

FREDERICK A. LEDWARD, 0F FLINT, MICHIGAN.
CONCEALED DOOR-HINGE.
LYALS.
Application filed January 27, 1913.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented (het. 2i., 1913.
Serial No. 744,382.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. LED- WARD, a citizen of the United States, resida concealed door hinge to be used on automobile doors more particularly, in which the hinge consists of two parts, male and female,
anchored to the door and post respectively and engaging each. other wit-hout a separate pin, and so constructed that the hinge is concealed from observation when the door is closed. l attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whiche- Figure 1 the hinge parts, male and female separated; Fig. 2, the hinge assembled and the door open; dotted lines show position of female part when hinge is closed; Fig. 3, side view of bo-th parts, male and female; Fig. 4, face View of both parts.
Similar letters refer to similai throughout the several views. j
The hinge comprises the members a and el, the former preferably attached to the jamb Y, and the latter attached to the door X by screws as usual. The member a is fashioned with an integral plate b projecting at right angles therefrom, and this plate is seated in a recess provided therefor in the edge'of the jamb Y when the plate is attached in place on the jamb.
lin the member a a vertically arranged perforation or socket c is formed, and the member is also formed with an L-shaped parts slot or opening h. At the' side of the mem-- ber a which becomes the inner side thereof when the member is in position, a reinforcing lug .g projects, and this lug is flush with one of. the upper walls of the slot h and directly above the plate b.
The member d has projecting at right angles therefrom an integral angle plate e from which depends a lug or boss f adapted to seat in the socket or perforation c in the plate Z), and a shoulder e is formed integral with the plate e, and this shoulder., when the door is opened'to its greatest width, holds the door open. Alreinforcing lug vg projects from the inner face of the member d just above the horizontal portion of the slot 7L and flush with the upper wall thereof, and this lug'guides' or furnishes a bearing for the plate b as itswings in and out of the slot IL.
'Flic' hinge members are attached to the jamb and door with screws as usual, the jamb being recessed to receive the plate I). The door is hung while in full open position (Fig. 2) by holding up the door so that the boss f and angle plate e will pass through the Il -shaped slot 7L. 'llhe boss is then inserted into the perforation or socket c in plate b and becomes the pivot of the hinge. It will be understood of course that l use a plurality of hinges on a door, the number being determined by thecircumstances of the case. When the door is swung open or closed the plate c freely passes through the slot la, swinging on the pivot bosses.
To remove the door it is opened full width, lifted to withdraw the bosses from their sockets, and then the plate e and its boss are withdrawn through the respective slots h.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is A hinge including a door lnember having an integral plate formed with a pivot boss and a shoulder, and a stationary member having an [1 -shaped slot, and a perforated plate to receive the boss, whereby the door may be held open its full Width by engagement of the shoulder with the wall of the slot.
