CONTAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1913.
Application filed February 21, 1918. Serial Ho. 749,778.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMIL Scn'innsn, a citizen of Germany, residing at Brooklyn,
county of Kings, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Container, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a container for tobacco and other articles of merchandise which is composed of a plurality of telescoping units that are interlocked in a novel and peculiarrnianner. The construction of the container is such that when partly emptied, its length may be reduced, so that its bulk is diminished corresponding to the consumption or withdrawal of its charge. So also the container when once partly collapsed, cannot be again distended without considerable effort, so that. a spurious recharging is practically prevented.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a side View of the component parts of the container showing them before being connected; Fig. 2 a side View of the container showing it distended; Fig. 3 a similar view showing the container collapsed, and Fig. 4 an enlarged longitudinal section of the container.
The container comprises essentially an optional number of overlapping units or sec tions made of suitable size, shape and mate rial, the drawing showing three of such units 10, 3.1 and 12, each made of oval shape. The relative size of the units is such that the to) unit- 10 telescopes and is slidable upon the intermediate unit 11, while the latter in turn telescopes and is slidable upon the lower unit 12. To the top unit 10, there is hinged a cover 13, the intermediate unit is open at both ends, while the lowermost unit 12 is provided with a bottom 14. Near the bottom of the top unit 10, there is formed at each side thereof, an inverted V slot 15, to provide an upwardly pointing integral tongue 16. which is bent inward toward its tip (Fig. 4). In like manner, there are formed near the bottom of the iii-- termediate unit 11, inverted V or upwardly peaked slots 17 to provide upwardly pointing integral tongues 18 which are also bent slightly inward. Near the top of the Qitermediate unit 11, there are formed true V slots 19 to provide downwardly pointing integral tongues 20, which are bent outward at their tip. So also there are formed near the top of lowermost unit 12, true V slots 21 forming downwardly pointing integral tongues 22 which are likewise bent outward. Units 10, 11 in the distended state of the device overlap to such an extent, that the inwardly bent tongues of unit 10, project upwardly through slots 19 0t unit 11, so as to lie against the inner faces of the outwardly bent tongues 20. In this way, unit 10 cannot be drawn ofi' unit 11, but may he pushed downward along the same, after havino become emptied. In like manner, tongues 18 of unit 11 become so interlocked with leagues 22 of unit 12, that unit ll cannot he drawn oil unit 12, but may be freely lowered along the same after being emptied, Thus it will be seen that the size of the container may be reduced from time to time as its successive sections become emptied, so that in this way the bulk of the packa e is correspondingly diminished. When unit 10 has been pushed entirely over unit 11 in the manner described,
its tongues 16 will become horizontallyv alined with tongues 18, and as tongues 16, 18 project sidewise in the same direction, tongues 16 will spring in underneath slots 17, so as to engage the upper edges of such slots. In this way, the two sections become so firmly inte'locked, that they cannot be released without first unbending tongues 16, which is a tedious and difficult operation.
'Thus it will he seen that for all practical purposes, the container when once collapsed, cannot he again distended, so that a spurious refilling is eii'ectively checked.
I claim:
1. A container comprising a first unit having a lower upwardly extending inwardly deflected tongue, a second unit telescoped by the iirst unit and having an upper downwardly extending outwardly deflected tongue and a lower slot, the tongue of the first uni t. being adapted to interlock with the tongue of the second unit in the raised tion of said unit, while said tongue of the first unit is also adapted to engage in said slot of the scmnd unit in the collapsed ositimi oi" the units.
2. A container comprising a first unit having a lower upwardly pointing inand a third unit havin wardly pointin fie first unit being adapt to the tongue of tbe interlocked with the upper tongue of the I second unit, while the lower ton no of seid second unit is adapted to be inter ocked wlth the tongue of the third unit.
