Description

TOE.
HALDON R. WISEMAN, OF SAWTELLE, CALIFORNIA.
DOOR-SECUREB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 14, 1912.
Patented Sept. 30, 1913. Serial No. 697,172.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HALD N R. WISEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sawtelle, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Door-Securer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a securing device which may be readily carried in the pocket and used for the various purposes described hereinafter, and especially as a securing device which can be mounted on the inside of the door, providing a device that can not be tampered with or removed by outside interference.
A further object is to provide an economical device whichmay be used on a sash or door without the necessity of alteration in construction of either the door or its frames.
1 accomplish these objects by means of the device described herein and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my door lock showing itsapplication to a door and its frame. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of the runner or latch.
in the drawings, 5 designates a bar or body which is readily stamped and formed of sheet metal or forged into the form shown in the drawings. One end of the bar is turned at right angles to form a hook 6 which is adapted to engage the lock strike 8 in the casing. This hook 6 I have shown provided with a plurality of teeth sharpened for the double purpose of making a mark when the device is used as a gage or to allow it to be readily inserted in the wood of the door casing if for any reason the lock strike is absent or no aperture is available. Bar 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 9 preferably circular, also an opening 10 provided with a cutting edge. The opposite end of the hook 6 is cut away as shown in the drawings, its lower edge formed into a loop or ring 11, and the upper edge into a hook 12 to act as a bottle opener. One edge of the bar is also shown beveled at 13 and a scale stamped thereon. Mounted on the bar 5 is a latch 14 also preferably stamped and formed out of sheet metal withtwo side plates 15 and 16 which embrace the bar 6. On one of its side plates, designated 15, an
extension is formed carrying the stud 17, adapted to engage and pivot in the openings 9. The opposite ends of the two side plates are formed as shown, with the shoulders 18 which engage, in the operation of securing the door, the faces of the door and the casing as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The object of the plurality of openings is to provide for adjustment to suit various thicknesses of door casings and to shift the latch it is swung to a position at right angles to the bar 5 as shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines, when stud 17 can be placed in the required openings. Vhen the latch is in engagement with the openings 9 near the cigar cutting openings 10 in the bar, the cutaway portion 19 registers with the opening 10 and the latch can be used as a shear for cutting the tips of. cigars. Shoulders 18 when in their normal position as in Fig. 3 act as the butt of a gage for carpenters or mechanics use. The ring 11 is provided for the purpose of securing the device to a key ring.
It will be readily observed that I have provided a handy and useful device for the purposes set forth, and which may be applied to any door and securely hold such door from being opened except from the inside, thus obviating any liability of the door from being opened by picking the lock or the use of a pass key.
lVhat I claim is:
A door securer, comprising an elongated bar provided with a bent end to engage a door jamb, having a series of longitudinally disposed bores, a latch formed of an integral piece of metal, bent to straddle said bar, the forwardly disposed sides bent upon themselves to form braced shoulders, and one of said sides of said latch being provided with an extension beyond the oppositely disposed side, and a stud upset on said extension, whereby the stud may be registered in one of said bores in said bar, and pivot the latch therein to straddle and lock said latch in adjustable relation on said bar.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
