To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Asa P. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Type and Furniture; and I do hereby deelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention has for its object to provide an improved form of interlocking printers type, furniture and chase, and to this end the invention consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a plan view showing a printers chase and type and furniture applied thereto and embodying my present invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line :0 m of Fig. 1, some parts being broken away; and, Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 00 8 of Fi 1, some parts being broken away.

The numeral 1 indicates a chase of special design and which is made segmental and is adapted for application to the cylinder of a printing press. The chase is provided with a segmental bottom plate and an integral marginal flange surrounding a seat that is adapted to contain the type, the so-called furniture, cuts,etc.,all seated directly on the said bottom plate. The type are indicated by the numeral 2 and are made short; and the strips which make up the so-called furniture are indicated by the numeral The so-called furniture strips 3 and the type are formed on one edge with longitudinally extended grooves and on their opposite edges are formed with projecting ribs, which, are adapted to interlock, as best shown in Fig. 2. The grooves in the type and in the furniture strips are indicated by the numeral 4:, while the ribs on the type and on the furniture strips are indicated by the numeral 5. The ribs on the furniture or on the type are adapted to interlock with the grooves (5 formed in one of the end portions of the chase flange. The side portions of the marginal flange are undercut, as shown in Fig. 3, and the adjacent type and furniture are so formed as to interlock with said undercut side portions. The furniture strips 3 will usually, of course, be made in different widths. Similar elements herein designated as keys 7, are formed with corresponding grooves and ribs so that they are adapted to be interposed between and interlocked with the furniture strips, as shown in Fig. 2. These keys, however, are prefe ably made quite thin and narrow but they are provided with upwardly projected ends in the form of beveled heads 7, that are adapted to engage and hold the beveled base block 8 of the stereotype plate or cut 9. The manner of applying the said keys in sets of four, or more, is shown by Figs. 1 and 2 wherein the stereotype plate is placed upon two furniture strips and is interposed between other furniture strips and type.

By extending the heads of the keys 7 upward beyond the upper surfaces of the furniture blocks or strips, stereotype plates or cuts may be set up on the same furniture strips as are used in connection with the type. In other words, the furniture strip or strips on which the stereotype plate is set up may be of the same thickness as the remainder of the furniture strips, so that special strips for the stereotype plates or cuts are rendered unnecessary.

After the type, furniture strips, cuts, etc., are properly assembled in the chase and interlocked with each other as shown in the drawings, they are adapted to be held in such interlocking engagement by cooperating pairs of wedge blocks 10 that are interposed between one end [lange of the chase and the adjacent furniture strips. Screws can be used instead of wedges.

As is evident by inspection of Fig. 2, the type, furniture strips, keys, and the chase are all interlocked by the engaging grooves and ribs. These grooves and ribs while capable of being otherwise formed, are preferably made V shaped in cross-section so that they will be accurately alined when pressed together.

By referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted, that the furniture strips are curved longitudinally to correspond with the curvature of the chase and that the end surfaces of the same converge on lines that radiate from the axis of the are of curvature of the said chase. This is especially desirable in the type because it permits the best closed oint. possible between the type, and hence, the best possible justification of the type.
