LAMP-BURNEBJ Specification of Letters I'atent.
TO CZZZLOhO m it may concern: t v
Be it known that I, VIRGILwH. MILLs,-a
citizen of the United States, residing at Hubbard, in the county of Hill and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners,of
V which the following is'a specification,
This invention relates to improvements in lamp burners, and one object of the invention is to provide a burner in which will be obtained a more perfect combustion than heretofore and in which the danger of explosion will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention is to provide means toassure the proper trimming of the wick, and a still further object i to provide an improved means for holding the chimney in position.
V The several stated-objects, and such other objects as will incidentally appear hereinafter, are attained in such a mechanism as is illustratediin the accompanying drawings, and the invention consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying'drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of the lamp burner embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the wick cone removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of- Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the trimming gage. Fig. 6 is a plan view showing a modification of the invention. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 77 of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a plan view showing a further modification. Fig. 9 is a section on the line 99 of Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is adetail perspective view of a portion of the chimney retaining ring.
In carrying out present invention, I may employ a burner base 1 having the usual perforated draft plate 2, to which a wick cone 3 is hinged, as will be readily understood. Secured to the base 1, at intervals around the same, are spring fingers 4 having eyes 5 near their upper ends, through which a chimney retaining ring 6 is passed, as will be readily understood. The said ring 6 is usually constructed of spring wire having a hook 7 at one end and provided at its opposite end with an eye 8 ring will be held coupled aroundthe lamp chimney. Adjacent the eye 8 a spring coil 9is formed in the ring, which coil is expanded to permit the engagement of the eye 8 over the hook 7 and then automatically retracts so as to hold the said parts in engagement. To facilitate themanipulw tion of these elements, I provide a fingerpiece or handle 10 at the end of this coil 9 so that, after the chimney is in place over the burner and upon the base 1, the ring may be readily fastened by pressing the end thereof against the chimney and then with the fingers of the same hand drawing upon the said handle 10, so as to pull the eye 8 over and into engagement with the hook 7 as will be understood. The operation of fastening the ring in position will thus be accomplished expeditiously and. easily, with Patented Sept. 16, 1913. Application filed December 19,1912. Seria1No.737;732 I 1 jacent the upper end of the wick tube and should be approximately of the same width as the wick tube so that air rising through the said tubes will feed the entire body of the flame rising fro-m the wick. The said draft tubes 12 being preferably disposed at an inclination or angle to the wick tube, as shown most clearly in Fig. 3, any particles of soot or charred wick which might tend to drop upon the draft plate 2 will flow down through the said tubes 12 and consequently pass out from the burner with out obstructing the draft therethrough and causing imperfect combustion. The tubes are rigidly secured in the base by being soldered or otherwise fixed to the draft plate and they may extend Vertically, as shown at 13 in Figs. 8 and 9, in which event they upper end-of the wick tube, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, which box would be open at f its lower end so as to'supply a strong current of air to the flame.
i The'wick 16 rises through the "wick tube 11 and is raised or lowered to adjust the flame by the wick raiser 14 in the usual manner. According to my present invention, however, the wick does not slide directly upon the walls of the wick tube, but passes through a gage or trimmer tube 17 which i walls of the opening in the draft plate through which the lifter passes and thereby retain the lifter, and the tube attached therei tofi'n either its raised or lowered'p'osition. The tube 17 is provided 111 its lower portion F with one or more longitudinal slots 21 which accommodate the star wheels of the wick raiser, so that neither element willinterfere wlth the operation of the other. The upper end-10f the wick tube is curved, as shown 1 clearly at 22, so as to form a gage when'the accompanying drawings, that I have pro- 1 i ingthe chimney will be reduced to a mini- -j wiek is being trimmed to insure the proper trimming.
"'It will be readily seen from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the vided means for supplying a constant and steady supply of air to the top of the wick so that proper combustion will be assured an'dthe liability of explosions or of smokmum; The air or draft tubes provided by me; furthermore, serve to reinforce the base of the burner andv may be secured to the uppee-end of the wick tube so as to eife'ctually brace the same and thereby preventthe warping or twisting thereof, so that the appearance of the lamp is improved. also'essentlal to an economlcal consumption of oil and to obtain proper illumination from the lamp, that the wick be carefully and the smoking of lamp chimneys lsia'lso very commonly due to improper or hasty trimming of the wick.
Bymy improvements the trimming of the wick in a proper manner is made certain,
even though the trimming shears be manipulated by a mere novice and for this purpose I liave provided the tube 17. When it is desired to trim the wick, the lifter 18 is. ma-
5 nipiilated to raise the gage or trimming tube IZ'thereby drawing the wick up above the 1 burner and exposing the upper curved end offthetrimmer tube. The shears are then manipulated and caused to bear upon the upper end of the trimmer tube while being 1 manipulated, so that as a result the wick Co lies of this patentmay beobtained It is} is given the proper curved trim necessary for proper combust on and eificlent illumination.
he lamp burner embodying my improve- V 7 described my invention, what ithroug-h, and draft tubes extending through ?the base plates at opposite sides of the wick ftube with their upper ends immediately ad jacent the upper endof the wick tube to feed air directly to and laterally upon the upper end of the wick. r 2. In a lamp burner, the combination of a base, a wicktube extending therethrough, a gage tube sl-idably fitted within the wick tube, and a lifter attached to the said gage tube and projecting above the base. '3. In a lamp burner, the combination of a {base, a. wick tube extending upwardly therefrom, and a gage tube slidably fitted within the wick tube and having its upper endshapedto guide the trimming of the wick. 41. In a lamp burner, the combination of a fbase having a wick tube rising therefrom, a V
constructed to accommodate the wick raiser,
i and means for raising and lowering the said gage tube. V
5. In a lamp-burner, the combination of a gbase having a wick tube rising therefrom, a .j gage tube fitted within the wick tube and longitudinally slotted, means for raising and ilowering the said gage tube, and a wick jraiser working through the slots in said tube l ;to engage the wick. i
