To @ZZ whom t may concern Be it lnownthat l, HERBETNV. OWEN, of Dover, in the county/of Stratford and State of New Hampshire,l have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rfools for Applying Travelers to Rings, of which the following is `a specification.
The travelersused in connection with the rings of spinning Aand twisting machines are so very small and light that it is a rather delicate operationto properly locate them on the rings because it is necessary to spread them in order that they can be snapped over the top flanges of the rings.
The objectof the present invention is to provide a tool, preferably a magazine tool, Which will enable travelers to be quickly and certainly snapped onto the rings of spinning and twisting frames with littlefor no loss of travelers. Y
To this end the invention consists in the tool and themagazine carrier substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Of the accompanying draWings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tool, a spinning ring being also shown to illustrate the manner of using the tool. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section online 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a sectionon line 4 4 of Fig. 2, but on a larger scale. 1F ig. 5is a View l similar to Fig. 4, but illustrating a further step Vin the use of the tool, a portion of the side lug or ear being broken away. ' The body 10 of the tool is formed with an extension or tip 11 having a forwardly Vopening recess12 to bear against the outer edge of the top iiangeof a spinning ring Said extension is providedwith a. finger A13 projectingbeyond thefrecess 12 and having a hook or lug `14 at. itsfouter end. The rear end of the bodycf the tool isv formed with a lateral extension 15, which removably lsupports the magazine bar or carrier 16 having awebA 17. Said bar is slightly re-l silient, and haslfawflatouterv face 18 of a width equal tothethicknessof the web 17, so that said` bar, inftransverse section, lwill Y have the form or shape of the interior of traveler a. The web 17 is clamped between ears 15a of the extension 15, by screws 15b, the thickness of the web being slightly less than the space between the facing ends of the travelers so that the travelers can freely pass through the Cshaped space 15c around the carrier 16. The forward end of the carrier 16 is curved and provided with a beveled tip 19, the convex face of this curved portion having a groove 20 so that the said curved portion of the carrier, as well as the recess 12 of the tip 11, may be brought into juxtaposition with the outer edge of the top iiange of the ring b, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
Mounted in a longitudinal recess on the body 10 ,is a slide 21 having a push handle 22 at one end, said slide being normally in the position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 by a spring 23 coiled about the projecting rear end of the slide between the inner face of the handle and the rear end of the body 10. The front end of the slide is formed or provided with a head 24 which is beveled or cut awayV to form a thin lip 25 having its extreme tip or edge curved, as best shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
In operation, and assuming that the magazine bar or carrier 16 has been supplied with a number of travelers o, the user so tilts thetool that the travelers will slide to the front end of the bar 16 with one of said travelers in front of the curved front edge or pusher 25 of the thin tip of the head 24. rllhe tool is then placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, 2, and 4, the extension 13 reaching across and resting upon the top of the ring b. Then pressure on the handle so as to push the slide 21 toward the ring b, causes the thin edge of the head 24 to push out the traveler a that is in front of it, the eXtreme edge of the head riding over the beveled tip 19 of the bar or carrier, the latter yielding sufficiently to permit this to be done. As the outer edge of the tcp flange of the ring is in the space between the facing ends of the traveler, this pushing action of the head 24 forces the traveler from the position shown in Fig. 4 over to the position shown in Fig. 5, .the traveler yielding sufliciently to permit this to be done, and then contracting or snapping onto the iange of the ring Z9. During this operation the middle portion of the tip of the pusher engages the traveler and advances it from the position shown in Fig. 4, toward Vthe position shown in Fig. 5, while the upper forward extension of the curved tip guides the traveler with a rocking motion so that it turns from -the position where it first straddles the outer flange of the ring until it has been given substantially onefourth rotation in its own plane, at which latter point it snaps over the inner flange of the ring, the latter position being shown ct carrier 16, so that when a traveler is Y, laying to thread the traveler.

In other words, the lug or ear 13b constitutes a guide for the leading portion of the traveler that is being forced over the top of the ring by the pusher 25.
The magazine bar or carrier 16 is removable from the extension 15 of the body of the tool so that it may be readily loaded with a supply of travelers by such loading apparatus as illustrated and claimed in my application, Serial No. 685,532 filed concurrently herewith. A suit-able stop, such as a nut 16a removably carried by the outerend of the carrier 16. is provided to prevent the travelers from sliding 0H from such outer end.- In order that the carrier 16 may be loaded without applying` it to the loading apparatus referred to, either while said carrier is connectedl to the tool or removed therefrom, l provide a supplemental carrier` such as indicated at 26, in Fig. 8 and 9. Said carrier may be of any length, capable of holding hundreds or thousands of travelers. removable end stop nuts 27 being employed. Such supplemental carrierwill be loaded by the apparatus referred to, and
owing to its cross-sectional shape corresponding with the interior of the travelers strung thereon, the latter can not turn in the carrier, and maybe readily slid onto the carrier 16 when the nut 16au and one of the nuts 27 are removed and the two carriers brought end to end. It is also to be understood that, if desired, a number of carriers 16 may be used interchangeably with one tool. All may be loaded with travelers, and

which is not wide enough to permita trav- Y eler to escape through it, but which can be spread or made wider by the crowding action of a traveler thatV is being pushed through suchspaceby the thin lip 25. VThe driving edge of the lip 25 is not at a rightV angle to the path of movement of .the pusher, but is irregular so thatafter the lower point of the traveler has been inserted under the ring flange a continued movement of the pusher and its irregular tip will turn or rotate the traveler in its own plane and spring it overthe top of the ring,
the width, of which is always greater than the space between ,the points of thetraveler.

4. An implement for applying travelers to spinning rings, comprising a body having a tip recessed to engage the flange of a ring, a carrier having a beveled end adjacent the side ofthe recessed tip, and a pusher movable between the said beveled end and the side of the tip.

A tool of the character described, comprising a recessed member to engage the flange of a ring, a pusher movable alongside said member', and a magazine carrier having a beveled tip -in proximity to said recessed member, and having a groove in its front face adapted to engage the flange of the ring.

A tool of the character described, comprising a body having an extension formed y with a forwardly opening recess, and having a linger projecting beyond said recess, a slide having a curved pushing tip movable alongside of said linger, and a magazine carrier having a beveled tip adapted to deliver travelers one by one in front of said pushing tip..
7 A magazine carrierlfor a tool of the character described, said carrier comprising a singlebar capable of alone holding spinning ring travelers, said bar having longi tudinal guiding surfaces for the in-turned ends of spinning ring travelers, the bar also having means for preventing accidental endwise removal of ring travelers therefrom.
