LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
Application filed October 14, 1912. Serial No. 725,666.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, EARL R. GAsKiLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Post Falls, in the county of Kootenai, State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lIhis invention is directed to improvements in locks, and more particularly to one for use in connection with barn doors.
The invention has for its object to so construct a lock of this type that the bolt thereof may be easily and quickly disengaged from the keeper from either side of the door.
Vith these and other objects in View, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a barn door showing the lock in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the lock. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. i is a vertical sectional view on line 1*41 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar View on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of one of the bell cranks.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a casing, the same consisting of side plates 2, the same being held in spaced relation by end plates 3 and top and bottom plates at and 5 respectively.
Arranged transversely of the casing 1 and having its opposite ends secured to the plates 2 is a plate 6, said plate being provided with a central perforation 7 in which is slidably mounted the inner end of the bolt 8, said bolt having its out-er end projected through one of the end plates 3. The bolt 8 is surrounded by a coil spring 9, one end of which rests against the plate 6 and the other end against a transversely arranged pin 10 carried by the bolt 8, said spring normally holding the outer end of the bolt projected through one 0f the end walls 3. The inner end of the bolt 8 is provided with a pair of spaced pins 11 and 12 which pass through and are secured in vertical perforations 13 formed in said bolt, the purpose of which will appear later.
Iivotally connected to the side plates 2 are bell crank levers 14 and 15, the arms 16 and 17 of which are provided with fingers 18 and 19, respectively. The fingers 18 engage the pin 11 and the fingers 19 the pin 12 carried by the bolt 8.
Arranged transversely of the casing 1, and slidably mounted in the plates 2 is a shaft 20, said shaft being provided with a pair of transversely arranged pins 21, said pins being adapted to engage between the fingers 18 and 19 formed upon the inner ends of the arms 1G and 17 of the bell crank levers when said fingers span the shaft 20.
Secured to the opposite ends of the shaft 20 are finger pieces 22 which are so arranged in relation to the loops 23 so that when the hand of the operator is placed upon the loop and the finger pieces are engaged the shaft 20 may be shifted so that the bell crank levers 111 will be rocked to withdraw the bolt 8 from engagement with the keeper thus permitting the door to be unlocked.
lVhat is claimed is A lock comprising a casing, a plate arranged transversely of the casing, a spring pressed bolt slidably supported by the casing and plate, a shaft extending trans versely through the casing, and slidably mounted therein, a pair of pins carried by the bolt, bell crank levers pivotally connected to the sides of the casing, said levers having their ends provided with fingers, pins carried by said shaft, the fingers formed upon the outer ends of the bell cranks being adapted to engage the pins carried by the bolt, the fingers formed upon the inner' ends of said bell cranks being adapted to engage the pins carried by the shaft, whereby when said shaft is shifted the bell cranks will be rocked to actuate said bolt.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EARL R. GASKILL. Vitnesses A. M. REYNOLDS, Tierno. P. ToLLnrsoN.
