FIRE-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 26,1913.
Application filed January 14, 1913. Serial No. 741,916.
This invention relates to looks of the fire door type, such as used in public buildings, etc, and particularly to that type of lock shown in my prior Patent No. 1,047,900, dated December 17, 1912, in which a plurality of spaced locking bolt members are controlled and retractable through a common operating means.
My present invention aims to provide an improved lock of this type providing a simple unitary structure and embodying the improved structural features and advantages more particularly pointed out in the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part thereof and illustrating a preferable embodiment of the invention.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical section taken through the edge of a hollow metal door having my improved form of unitary lock applied thereto., Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the door shown in Fig. 1, the top edge plate of the door being removed. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the upper part of the door casing and lock, the front wall of the door being removed to disclose the interior arrangement. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional View showing one of the locking bolts projected. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through said parts taken transversely of the door. mentary vertical sectional View showing a locking bolt in retracted position. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view through said parts taken transversely of the door. Fig. 8 shows views in top plan of the guiding brackets for the bolt operating bar. is a detail view in top plan and side eleva tion of a locking bolt. Fig. 10 is a detail view in top plan and side elevation of a locking dog. Fig. 11 is a detail in side and edge elevation of a bolt actuating link. Fig. 12 is a fragmentary view in rear and side elevation of the operating bar.
The lock forming the subject matter of this invention is intended for application in a unit form to the front edge of a hollow Fig. 6 1s a frag- Fig. 9
.nietal door, being insertible directly from the edge of the'door. The casing support- -1ng the lock parts is formed as an angle iron comprising the side bars 1 and 2 which may be readily formed to provide the proper bevel for the edge of the door. This angle iron extends substantially the entire height of the door and its bar 1 at suitable intervals longitudinally thereof is provided with studs 3 adapted to secure the angle iron to the inner face of the door opposite its bar 1. Extending vertically of the door edge and longitudinally of the bar 2, are a plurality of spaced guiding brackets as 4, 5 and 6, each being secured to the bar 2 of the angle iron and each having therein an aperture 7, these apertures being progressively elongated from the bottom of the door upwardly. An operating bar 8 is guided through the apertures 7 of these brackets, this operating bar moving vertically in these apertures, and by reason of the elongation thereof in the upper guiding brackets, having also a lateral movement therein, as will be more clearly seen later.
9 designates a plurality of locking bolts spaced apart and extending vertically of the door and in alinement, each of these bolts.
being provided at its outer end with a roller latching head 10 and adjacent its inner end with an elongated slot 11, through which a head stud 12 extends and is secured to bar 1 of the angle iron. These locking bolts are provided with laterally offset lugs 13 at their upper edges. Bolt actuating links 14 have their lower ends pivotally mounted on studs 15 secured to and projecting from bar 1 of the angle iron and having their upper ends provided with bayonet slots 16, in which studs 17 carried by the bolts, operate. The under edges of these links 14 are beveled as at 14*. 18 designates pivoted locking dogs carried by studs 19 projecting from the bar 1, one of these locking dogs being provided for each bolt and cooperating with the offset lug 13 thereof. The angle bar 2 is suitably apertured to permit the projection therethrough of the roller heads of the locking bolts, and at the point of such apertures, metal guides 20 are pro vided, these guides being suitably secured to the inner face of the bar 2 at such points.
At a point intermediate its upper and lower ends, the bar 1 of the angle iron is provided with a lateral offset 21 and a lock casing 22 is suitably secured to the inner face of the bar 1 and its offset portion 21. This casing carries a knob spindle 23 and a roll-back 24L controlled thereby. A yoke member 25 rests on the roll-back 24L and is rigidly secured to the operating bar 8, so that movement of the roll-back will serve to move said yoke and through it the operating bar 8. The operating spindle 23 and its roll-back 24: are operated from the interior of the door by any suitable manually operable means. The specific construction, however, of these operating means forms no part of the present invention, though such means may, and preferably do, take the form of those shown in my prior patent hereinbefore referred to, No. 1,047,900.
The operating bar 8 carries a plurality of pins 26 which are positioned to rest under the beveled edges 14? of the bolt operating links 14. The upper end of the operating bar extends through the aperture in the topmost guiding bracket 6 and has fixedly secured to its upper end a head 27 having a laterally offset portion 28. The bar 2 of the angle iron at a point adjacent the head 27, has attached thereto a guiding bracket 29 against the inner face of which the edge of the offset 28 rests when the bolt members are projected. Adjacent this guiding bracket 29 and carried by the bar 1 of the angle iron, are spaced ears 30 between which a dog 31 is pivotally mounted. This dog is provided at its outer end with a roller contact 32 which is adapted to project through a suitable aperture formed in the bar 2 at this point. The bar 2 of the angle iron forms the edge of the door and a finishing plate 33 may be and preferably is secured thereto, by welding or otherwise, this plate being provided with apertures therein alining with those formed in the bar 2 of the angle iron.
The parts so far described, when assembled, form a completely assembled unit and may be inserted as a unit within a hollow metal door at its edge. In the drawings, 3% and 35 designate the side walls of such a door and 36 and 37 its top and bottom walls, the unit lock being inserted within these walls of the door and its bar 2 and finishing plate 3 forming the door edge. The bar 1 of the angle iron frame is suitably secured as by welding to the inner face of the wall 34 of the hollow door, and the studs 3 projecting from said bar are of such length that they may be spot-welded to the inner face of the opposite wall 35 of said hollow door. By employing such welding studs in connection with an angle iron frame, the cost of material is reduced to a minimum and the lock frame is made in such form Assuming that the door is closed, with the latch heads 10 of the locking bolts projecting into suitable sockets formed in the strike plates of the door jamb, and with the dog 31 moved inwardly within the lock casing by contact with the flush face of the 73 strike plate at that point. In order to open the door, say from the interior, the rollback 24 is operated by an interior handle moving the yoke 25 upwardly and with it 75 the operating bar 8. The pins 26 of the operating bar will engage the beveled edges 1 1 of the links 1 1 moving these links inwardly, and bring the pins 17 in their bayonet slots from the position shown in Fig. 4 83 to that shown in Fig. 6 and retracting the locking bolt-s 9 and their latching heads 10. lVhen these bolts are projected, the ends of the locking dogs 18 rest in rear of the offset lugs 13 of the locking bolts, so that the door may not be surreptitiously opened from the exterior by the insertion of a knife or other implement between the jamb and door. When, however, the operating bar 8 is moved upwardly through the roll-back 24:, the upper ends of the links 1 1, which rest beneath the locking dogs, will engage with their under edges and lift them from in rear of the bolt offsets 13, so that upon further movement of these links, the bolts are retracted. It will be noted that, by reason of the bayonet slots, a preliminary free movement of these links is permitted to raise the locking dogs out of the way, so that by the time the edges of the links at the forward end of the bayonet slots, engage the studs 17 to retract the locking bolts, the locking dogs 18 will have been moved out of the way.
it is desirable to provide means whereby these locking bolts are held retracted after the door is opened and are automatically projected when the door is closed. I have provided such means in my construction and its operation as follows: When the operating bar 8 is raised through the roll-back 2-'l-, the offset upper end 28 of this bar rides on the bracket 29 and the bar moves vertically until the under edge of its offset 28 clears the upper edge of the bracket 29, whereupon the weight of the locking bolts and the pressure of the hub, being toward the edge of the door, the operating bar 8 will move laterally outward in the direction of the door edge and in doing so will throw the pivoted dog 31 outwardly and will project its roller 32 out beyond the edge of the door. This lateral movement of the operating bar 8 is permitted by reason of the elongated slots 7 of the upper guiding brackets 5 and G, the aperture 7 in the lower bracket 1 being sufiiciently large to permit the slight lateral movement of the operating bar at this point. The ofiset upper end 28 of the operating bar 8 will then rest upon the upper face of the bracket 29 and will retain the bolts 9 and their rollers 10 in retracted position as long as the door remains open. When the door closes, however, the roller 32 of the dog 31 will be pushed inwardly by engagement of the flush face of the strike plate of the door jamb, moving the oifset 28 inwardly and out of engagement with its supporting bracket 29, so that the operating bar 14 will drop by gravity, which force will likewise cause the locking bolts to move from the position shown in Fig. 6 to that shown in Fig. t, this automatic gravity operated pro j ection of the bolt members being facilitated by the roller heads 10 of the bolt members which act as antifriction bearings for the bolts proper, as well as forming the latching heads thereof.
\Vhile I have described herein a specific embodiment of my invention, I desire it understood that the same is susceptible of various structural modifications within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
\Vhat I claim, therefore, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
