TAPE LINE HOLDER.
APPLIUATION FILED AUG. zo, 1912.

@9i/'mesmo 'UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE.
ROBERT F. AITKEN, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
TAPE-LINE HOLDER.
Speciication of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 20, 1912.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that IRoBERT F. AITKEN, a subject' of the King of Great Britain, residing at Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in TapeLine Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tape line holders, the object in view being to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment'for a tape line, by means of which the extremity of the tape may be held upon the work to be measured, without the aid of an assistant, thereby greatly facilitating the workman in his operations, the device also acting as a stop when the tape is wound upon the drum in the usual caseor container.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction,
ycombination and arrangement of parts, as
will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
and pointed out in the claims hereunto ap-` pended.
v In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder, showing a portion of the tape line attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the tape line with the improved holder, showing the same applied to a piece of lumber. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 41 is also an edge view of the device, lshowing the manner in which the same is used for inside measurements. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the casing or container, for the tape line, showing the tape line fully drawn into the casing and the holderacting as a stop on the periphery thereof. Fig. 6 is a section through the holder and adjacent end of the tape line.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an ordinal tape line of fabric or steel, to the extremity of which is applied the holder 2 of this invention.
The improved holder embodies two arms 3 and 4 extending at right angles to each other, and adjacent to the junction of said arms the holder is provided with oppositely projecting pintles 5.
Patented July 8, 1913.
serial No. 716,056.
In connection with the tape line and holder, I employ a sheet metal clip 6 which is folded upon itself and upon opposite sides of the extremity of the tape line, as shown, and riveted or otherwise permanently secured to the tape line. The clip 6 has oppositeportions thereof bent into the form of eyes 7 to receive the pintles 5, thereby admitting of a pivotal movement between the holder and the tape line, which permits the holder to be used either for outside or inside measurements. For outside measurements, the holder is arranged in a position, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to embrace the edge of the work, while allowing the tape line 1 to extend along the face of the work. For inside measurements, the holder is arranged as shown in Fig. 4, so that it may be held at an angle, while the tape line l extends along the surface of the work, or from one point to another.
When the tape line is wound upon the drum or'spool within the container, shown at 8, the holder 2 finally comes into contact with the periphery of the container, and thereby acts as a stop to revent the extremity of the tape from being drawn entirely within the container.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a tape-line, of a holder therefor embodying two arms at a right angle to each other, pintles extending from opposite edges thereof at the junction of said arms, the tape line having terminal eyes in which said pintles are received.
2. The combination with a tape line, of a holder therefor embodying two arms at a right angle to each other, pintles extending from opposite ed es thereof at the junction of said arms, an a clip embracing the extremity of the tape line and rovided with spaced eyes which receive sai pintles.
In testimon whereof I aix my signature' in presence o two witnesses.
ROBERT F. AITKEN.
