Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Applicetlonfiled March 23, 1912. Serial No. 685,738.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I,-JoHN L. BEENE, a'
citizen of the United States, residing at Centrahoma, in the county of Coal and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Cultivator Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
This invention re ates to new and useful improvements in cultivator attachments and more particularly to an attachment for thinning cotton and my object is to provide a device of this character which is so applied to the beam or stock of acultivator as to be securely held thereto and at the same time A further object of the invention resides in providing an arm formed in sections, one
section of whichis formed of spring steel to permit a disk carried on the end of the opposite section to readily ride over obstructions met in the path thereof.
Still another object of the invention re-- sides in providing a disk having offset portions provided on the periphery thereof, which offset portions extend radially of the center of thedisk, and a still further objectresides in providing means for adjustably securing the disk on the one section of the.
arm above referred to.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is extremely simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which is efficient and useful in operation.
With these and other'objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying part of this ap lication, spective view s owing my improved device applied to the beam of a cultivator and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the disk and attaching means therefor.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing, in'which similar reference characters designate correspondin parts through the several views, and in wh1ch 1 indicates a cultivator beam which has Figure 1 is a per resting thereacross, an arm 2 formed of spring metal, the one half of from said culhead 8 thereon,
drawing forming a j tivator beam, and in'order to secure the arm to the beam,
a U-bolt 3 is provided, which receives therethrough said beam and the arm. A clamping plate 4 which is passed over the free ends of the U-bolt contacts with the arm 2 and is held in secure engagement therewith by being clamped. down through the medium of thenuts 5 engaged with the threaded ends of said member 3.
The free end of the arm 2 at the lower bent end thereof is slotted as shown at 6 and an additional arm section 7 which is compoundly curved has the one end thereof secured to the slotted end of the arm 2 by means of a bolt 8', the referred to end of the arm section 7 being also slotted whereby it will be appreciated that the member 7' .is
adjustable with respect to the arm 2. The
opposite end of the arm section 7 has a spheroidal head member 8 formed thereon through which extends a bore 9, which tapers toward one end thereof and disposed through said bore is a bolt or the like 10 forming an axis for the disk 11. Secured to the inner face of the disk 11 is a sleevelike bearing 12, which has extending therethrough the bolt 10, said bolt being retained to the disk by having the head thereof disposed at the inner end of the hearing. A nut 13 is engaged with the, bolt 10 between the head 8 and the outer end of the bearing 12, and an additional nut 14 is engaged with the free end of the while arcuately designed washers 15 are provided between said nuts and the head 8 for obvious purposes. From this construction, it will be seen that the disk 11 will be securely mounted on the free end of the arm 7 and at the same time it is capable of adjustment laterally with respect thereto.
The disk 11 is of the usual type used on cultivators and the like and it has the peripherv thereof provided with offsets 16 which continue on thedisk toward the axial center thereof, thereby providing substantial radial offsets thereon. These offsets in the disk Wlll, of course, aid the agriculturalists in spacing the products planted in drills.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and inexpensive de vice which is capable of being adjusted in various ways with respect to the cultivator beam, and which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
which are bolt 10 to retain the While I have particularly described the elements most well adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportions and in the minor details ofconstruction may be resorted to without de arting from the s irit or sacrificing any 0 the principles 0 the invention.
Having thus described this invention, What I claim is A cultivator attachment comprising a curved spring arm provided with an angular head at one end thereof, said head being provided with a transversely extending opening tapering toward one end of the oser i0 same, a disk, a bolt on which said disk is revolubly mounted and having the threaded portion thereof extended through the opening in said head, Washers carried on said bolt on opposite sides of said head, and means engaged with the threaded end of said bolt to retain the same in revoluble position on the head.
0 In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN L. BEENE.
