y $9352? W. LGVERNG, QF SANDOWN, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
To cr whom Z may concern: .l
Be it known that i, donn W Lo'vnmno', a citizen of the United States, residing at Sandown, in the county of litockinghamand State of New Hampshire, have vinvented certain new and useful improvements in rlools; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and' use the same. y
This invention relates to tools, and articnlarly to hammers, being designe to provide a means whereby a hammer of the f ball type may .be convert-ed into a hatchet orcopper face hammer.
This invention contemplates the provision oi a means for performing the above object, whereby the hatchet attachment of the linnn mer is positive in its engagement of the herinner, and irmhnd substantial in construction. p
With the above and other objects in wiew, this invention consists of` the construction, combination and arrangement of parte, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein .Figure l is a side elevation of a hammer provided with the hatchet attachmentforming the subjectmatter of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar vie-w, illustrating the hammer provided with the copper face attachment. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. l with parts thereof in section. Fig. 4 is a similar view 'to Fig. 2, having the hammer face and copper face in section 2, illustrating the connection thereof with the hammer. Fig. 5 is the side elevation of the hatchet attachment. Fig. 6 is the section taken along line 6-6 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is atop plan view of the copper face attachment.
The tool, or hammer, forming the subject matter ofA the presentv invention comprises a hammer of the type commonly known as the hall hammer, said hammer being providedwith a detachable hatchet attachment which is adept-ed to be secured to the hammer face. This attachment is so constructed that the upper terminal thereof is yprovided with a split tubular projection which forms the upper or diametrically disposed spring bars which are adapted to engage the face l specification of Letters Patent. of the hammer and rigidly secure the face of the attachment thereto. In order to provide a positive enga ement between these spring bars and the ace of the hammer a spring band encircles the spring attaching ,members and is provided with rpjecti'ons at its terminals, said projections elng pierced by the screw which provides for the ready adjustmentof the s ring band and'consequently the spring animer face engaging members.
The cop'per face attachment comprises` a cylindrical` hammer face engaging member provided with a heavy transverse closure of one terminal thereof, the entire member being constructed of copper. An inwardly extending flange is provided at the upper terrylginal of the cylindrical hammer face engage ing portion and retains a tubular, liexib e gasket therein, said gasket forming a suc tion about the hammer face and thereby rlmovides for the positive engagement ofthe emmer by the copper face attachment. 'Referring now moreparticularly to the drawings, 1:0 indicates a hammer of any suitable' construction of the type 'commonly known as the ball hammer, the hammer face 11 of which is constructed of any suitable material such as steel, iron,'etc. I
in Figs. 1,'3, 5 and 'is illustrated 4va hatchet attachment comprising a. blade. le which is provided at its uplper terminal with Referring now to Figs. 2, 4 and 7. 20 indicates a copper tubular member havingthe lower terminal thereof closed by the heavy copper face 21. The upper terminal of the tubular portion 20 is provided with the 1nwardly extending dangle 22. Ihis flange 22 ret'ains a rubber or ot er flexible `gasaet 23 within said tubular member 20, said gasket of the sleeve, and a set screw forming a means whereby the copper face 21 is firmly secured to the hammer l0.
Havino' thus fully described my invention,
, what c aim as new and desire to secure by U. S. Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a hammer, of 'a hatchet blade attachment comprising a split sleeve adapted to engage the hammer head and formed with a blade, a band externally l binding the ends of the band together to tension the sleeve and bind the device to'a hammer.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
