IMPRovrin WASHING-MAQHINE.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL Dn VEAU, of' Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machinesa and I do `hereby declare that the following is a'il'ull, clear, andexact description thereof', which will enable those skilled inthe art to make and use thesane, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speci1i cation, in whichv i l `Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and

Figure 2 is a a vertical cross-section.

In the accompanying drawing- 4A is a hollow wheel, which is supported on a boiler,

. The boiler B is seated uponthe furnace O for keeping the water in the machine hot.

The wheel is so constructed that a portion, A', is

remoyable, as a cover, for opening and closing t-he wheel.

The clothes are placed in the wheel with balls, G G, ol' wood, or other material, and when the wheel is rotated, the balls tread upon the clothes, the water being kept-atthe proper temperature by thefurnace;

The inside of thetwlieel is provided with butments or ribs, h h, which lift the clothes froni'the sidesof the vessel as'it is rotated, and cause the water to pass under them;

i -'lhe periphery of the wheel is madefdouble and di-v vided up into reservoirs or chuteswhich take up water and dischargeY it onto the clothes constantly when the wheel is'in motion.

These chutes take up waterfrom the boiler through their mouths f f and discharge it into the wheel by the openings e e, and this water is discharged onto t the clothes with a force proportional to the length of the column ofwater injthe chute.

` Openings, n n, are vmade in the sides of the wheel,

so that the redundancy of the water discharged into the wheel by the chutes can return to the boiler.

The cover A is fastened to the wheel by tenons C G, fig. 1, and hooks c ,6, lig. 2, or by other suitable devices.

The boiler -B has a cover, l), which is large enough to linclose that part of the wheel that projects above the' boiler B.

.lhe'furuace is constructed with double' walls, v7: 7:,- so that the clothes of the operator shall not be burned by coming in contact with its sides, and -is made all open at the top, underneath the boiler.

This stove is made of galvanized sheetiron. It can be dispensed with and the boiler mounted on an ordinary`stove, but by means of said furnace O the washing can be done out of doors, o r iu some attach-- ment ofthe house where no stoveis ordinarily kept.

R is the furnace-door, which is held in place by a lip and spring, s fr, and p is the stove-pipe.

By this construction of the wheelA the clothes are .constantlysupplied with a stream of water from above while they are being rolled over the abutlnents and being tread upon by the balls.
