YAXOEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adona. in the county of Perry and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial-Caskets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. My invention relates to improvements in concrete burial caskets.

The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and thereby render them less expensive and more durable and effective.

lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangementof parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and

The lid 2 of thecasketconforms in outline to the top of the body 1 and in cross section it is arch-shaped so that it will effectively withstand pressure from above. Any suitable metallic reinforcing frame or structure may be embedded in the lid, but as illustrated in Fig. 5 .this frame comprises four or more transverse arched bars 5 constructed of flat metal strips and having their flat ends notched at 6 for the reception of loops 7 on a surrounding connecting wire or rod 8. The intermediate portions of the reinforcing bars 5 are bowed or arched upwardly and are strengthened by horizontal brace bars 9. If desired a sight opening may be provided in the lid and when this is done said opening, which is indicated by the numeral 10, is covered by a heavy plate 11 of glass or other transparent material. This plate 11 has its ends supported on the horizontal brace bars 9 of two adjacent transverse brace bars 5. and in order to pre-- vent longitudinal shifting movement of the plate llupright stop bars 12 are preferably provided between the central portions of the parts :3, 9. as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. The longitudinal edges of the plate 11 engage the inner faces of the curved portions of the transverse arched bars 5 and are thereby prevented from lateral shifting movement. The cement, concrete or other plastic material which surrounds the me tallic reinforcing frame also surrounds the edges of the plate 11 so that the lid 9. is water and liquid-tight. In using the. invention it will be understood that both its exterior and interior may be covered with material which will render it ornamental or attractive in appearance.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:

1. The herein described casket comprising a body and a lid, each made of plastic material. a reinforcing structure embedded in said body and comprising a plurality of spaced U-shaped strips extending transversely thereof and having their end portions extended beyond the upper edge of the same, each of said end vportions being provided with a transverse opening;-the said lid being formed with laterally extending flanges to bear upon the upper edge of the body and terminate flush with the outer face of the same, said flanges being provided with upwardly opening recesses into which the extended end portions of said reinforcing. strips project, transverse reinforcing bars embedded in said lid and having their end portions extended over the recesses formed in the flanges thereofi said reinforcing bars beingprovided with longitudinally extending openings which communicate with the recesses formed in the side flanges of the cover, and L-shaped securing bolts extending downwardly through the longitudinal openings formed in the transverse reinforcing bars and having their lower end portions extended outwardly into engagement with the openings formed in the U-shaped reinforcing stripsembedded in the body, said securing bolts being movable inwardly and upwardly for the purpo e-of removing them from the recesses formed in said side tlanaes.
