EDWARD S. JONES, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-FIFTH TO K. T. SMITH, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
SUSPENDER-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 21, 1913.
Application filed April 4, 1912. Serial No. 688,449.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. Jones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Suspender-Clasp; and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and use ful suspender clasp.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a clasp of this nature, in which efficient and novel features of construction exist.
The features of the construction are hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a pair of suspenders showing the improved clasp applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail View of the clasp detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the clamping arms of the clasp. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on line 55 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings there are disclosed two clasps, each designated by the numeral 1. Each clasp consists of a strip of sheet spring material 2, bent upon itself as at 8, to form the two clamping arms 3 and 4. Each arm is provided with an elongated slot, to receive the rivet pin 5, which slot is de noted by the numeral 6. Each rivet pin is formed with an enlargement or finger piece 7, whereby the pin may be moved longitudinally in the slot. Mounted on the rivet pin is a plate 9, which is provided with cam members 11. The plate 9 is provided with recesses 12 and 13. The recesses 13 are formed in the cams. Swiveled loosely on each rivet pin under its head is a member 14 having oppositely extending projections 15, adapted to enter the recesses. When the rivet pin becomes loosened in the member 14, all that is necessary to increase the clamping action of the arms, is to rotate the member 14 until the projections 15 engage the recesses 13. Also to increase the clamping action the rivet pin is designed to be moved longitudinally in the slots of the clamping arm, toward their lower ends. The lower ends of the clamping arm terminate in upwardly turned flanges 16 having saw teeth adapted to engage the fabric as shown in Fig. 3. Riveted or otherwise secured to the lower portions of the clamping arms are plates 18, the upper portions of which terminate in flanges 19 having teeth 20, which also engage the fabric. The plates 19 are provided with spurs 21, which also engage the fabric. To increase the clamping action of the arm, and to cause the teeth of the arm and the plates 19 to penetrate the fabric more deeply, the rivet pin may be moved longitudinally in the slots, toward the lower ends of the spring arms.
From the foregoing it will be observed that there has been devised a novel and efficient clasp, and one which has been found practical.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A suspender clasp comprising adjacent spring clamping arms having registering slots and provided at their lower portions with fabric biting means, a rivet pin extending through the slots having a plate forming an integral part thereof at one end, said rivet pin being provided with a head, a second plate swiveled loosely on the pin under the rivethead of the pin and provided with cam portions provided with recesses, a collar member swiveled on the pin under its rivet head and provided with oppositely extending projections, adapted to ride on the cam portions until said projections engage the recesses, whereby the spring arms may be brought yieldably' and closer together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD S. JONES.
