Be it known that I, FREDERICK EwING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rope-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, Y
This invention relates to a coupling for connecting the ends of two sections or pieces of rope for use in connection with dumbwaiters or elevators and for other places in which the ends of ropes require to be joined without the formation of knots or other large lateral projections on the rope.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improved coupling applied to the opposing ends of two rope sections. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Figs. 3 and t are transverse sections in the correspondingly numbered lines in Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
1, 2 represent the two ends or sections of a rope which are adapted to be connected by means of my improved rope coupling'. As shown in the drawings this rope is con structed of strands of fibrous material which are ktwisted together spirally in the well known manner of rope making but my invention is'equally applicable to other forms of ropes.
In its general organization this rope coupling comprises two ferrules of substantially tubular form each of which is applied over the end of one of the rope sections, means for connecting the opposite ends of the ferrules, and means for clamping each ferrule on its companion rope section. Each of the ferrules is preferably constructed of sheet metal so as to form two side pieces 3 which are adapted to engage lengthwise with opposite sides of the respective rope section and each of which is of substantially semi-cylindrical form in cross section so as to fit the outer surface of the rope section. A transblank of sheet metal in any suitable and well known manner.
The preferred means for connecting the two coupling ferrules with each other comprises a link or connector having a reduced central shank or neck 6 passing lengthwise through registering openings 7 formed in the heads of the two ferrules, and two enlargements or buttons 8 arranged at opposite ends of the neck and engaging with the inner sides of the heads of the ferrules, as shown in Fig. 2. This manner of connecting the two ferrules with each other is comparatively strong and simple and provides the necessary flexibility between the ends of the rope to permit of operating the same as Patented Jan. 14, 1913.

Various means may be employed for connecting the ferrules with these rope sections but those shown in the drawings are preferred and comprise a plurality of screw bolts each of which passes with its body 9 transversely through a corresponding pair of openings 10, 11 in the side pieces of one of the ferrules and the adjacent part of the rope and bears with its head 12 against the outer side of one of the side pieces of the companion ferrule. The screw nut of each fastening bolt is preferably provided with a reduced inner part 13 which passes through the adjacent opening of the side piece and enters the rope and an outer enlarged part or iange 14 which bears against the outer side of this side piece. Byl this construction a comparatively long screw nut is provided without leaving an objectionably large projection on the outer side of the ferrule.
The preferred manner of constructing each screw bolt and applying the same to the rope and the ferrule consists in providing the front end of each bolt with a sharp or tapering front end 15 which permits of pushing or screwing the same easily through the strands of the rope and then screwing the same into its nut. The length of the screw is preferably lsuch that after the same has been passed through the side pieces of the ferrule, the rope and the screw nut, the tapering front end thereof projects laterally beyond the side of the ferrule, as shown at the left hand side of Fig. 2. After the parts have been thus assembled the tapering parts or points of the screw bolts may be removed or cut off by any suitable means so as to leave no appreciable lateral projection from the side of the ferrule, as shown at the right hand side of Fig. 2, and also in F ig. 1.
My improved coupling is not only very strong, durable and reliable but the saine can also he produced at comparatively low cost and it is also capable of being applied to the ends of two rope sections readily and conveniently, therehy avoiding the annoyance and expense attending the coupling of rope ends as heretofore practised.
I claim as iny invention:
A rope coupling comprising tivo Jerrules adapted to be applied to the end of two rope sections each of which ferrules coinprises two semi-cylindrical side pieces engaging with opposite sides of a rope section, a head connecting the outer ends of the side pieces, and a bolt passing through the side pieces and the adjacent part of the rope and having its head bearing against the outer side of one of the side pieces While the nut thereof has a reduced inner part projecting inwardly into the rope and an enlarged outer part- Which bears against the outer side of the other side pieces.
