Description

D. S. AGKERMAN.
KNOB NIGHT LOCK.
APPLIUATION FILED 111m. 1, 1911.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
attorney DOUGLAS S. ACKERMAN, OF ST. JOHNSVILLE, NEW YORK.
KNOB NIGHT-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DOUGLAS S. Aonnn- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johnsville, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knob Night-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to new and useful improvements in knob night locks and the main object thereof is to provide a device of this nature which will enable the operator to lock the latch and knobs connected therewith against movement from the outside of the room or house only, the operation of the lock being impossible from the opposite side of the door to that adjacent to which the night lock is illustrated.
A further object of my invention is to produce a night lock or latch that will be simple in construction, eflicient in operation, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference being had to the drawings: Figure 1 is a partial edge view of a door and latch, together with knobs and rods connecting the latter, to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view through the rod connecting the knobs, illustrating my invention in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a partial, vertical sectional view through the rod connecting the knobs of the door, the neck of one of the knobs and my invention which is applied thereto. Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the plate which engages the latch of the lock.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout, my invention is described as follows: The door 1 is provided with the usual latch 2 which is operated by the rod 3, which rod 3 connects the knobs 4. Said Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 1, 1911.
Patented Dec. 31,1912.
Serial No. 641,707.
knobs are the means whereby the latch is operated by the medium of the rod 3. Encircling the neck 5 of one of the knobs 4, is a ring or band 6, which is provided with a pair of perforated ears or lugs 7, between which cars is pivotally disposed a latch 8. The plate 9 which is secured to the inner wall of the door by means of screws 10, or any other suitable means adapted for the purpose, is provided adjacent its central opening 11 with a notch 12, vertically disposed, said notch being for the purpose of engagement of the latch 8 when it is desired to lock the latch 2 against movement, thereby locking the door as rigidly as if the usual key-operated lock were employed. Secured to the outer edge of the ring or band 6, is a flat spring 13, which spring is for the purpose of securing the latch in locked position when in said position, and also for securing the latch in unlocked position, as illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, when in that position. The lock is not intended to be used except at night when the house is locked up or the room door to which the device is applied is locked for the night. However, it may be used at other times if found convenient or necessary. It will be seen that the device is simple in construction and very easily and readily operated, by the hand, without the use of any auxiliary instrument.
Although I have specifically described the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of my invention, yet I do not confine myself to such construction, combination and arrangemest of parts but reserve the right to make such changes therein as do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the kind described, comprising a door latch, knobs and rod connecting said knobs, a metal ring encircling the neck of one of the knobs, said ring provided with a pair of upwardly projecting ears, a latch pivotally disposed between said In testimony whereof I aflix my signature ears, a circular plate J secured toithe door in presence of tWo Witnesses.
between the inside sur ace thereo' and the said ring, said plate provided With a ver- DOUGLAS AGKERMAN' tically extending notch adapted to engage Witnesses:
the said latch When it is desired to lock MARVIN FLANDERS,
the knobs. LEVEE D. AOKERMAN.
